I believe the University of Alabama announced today that it's planning for students to be on campus attending classes in the Fall. They've broken the ice. So, absent a terrible negative turn of events, I expect others to follow. It will then offer "cover" for others to do likewise. If it's safe enough to have students back on campus, it makes sense sports will be part of it.

In a message to the Middlebury community yesterday, Midd's President Laurie Patton said:

"Our scenario planning considers a variety of situations. We wanted to let you know that we are working toward a safe and secure opening of our campus for the fall semester. Because we must also continue the practice and good outcomes of rigorous public health protocols, we want to prepare you for the likelihood that life at Middlebury will be different than it was. Even in the best-case scenarios we are projecting some hybrid model of education, a blend of in-person and remote learning with the strong possibility that—because of public health protocols and individual circumstances—not all our faculty and students may be able to join us in person."

So, even in best-case scenarios, it's highly unlikely that all will return to campus in the fall.

Here's the entire statement: https://www.middlebury.edu/office/announcements/previous-announcements/april-30-2020-letter-president-patton-scenario-planning

Included with the message is a calendar for decision making, w/ decisions about the fall academic semester and fall and winter sports being made in late June. (Obviously, those decisions subject to change based on evolving public health considerations and scenarios in the fall and winter months.)

My big concern is that these schools will overreact. I want to be as safe as the next person. And I don't want to drive this discussion into one better suited for a political or scientific board. When considering
whether to wait for a vaccine before returning to normal (with prudent precautions), remember we may never have a vaccine. So the reality is that we may need learn to live with this virus until we develop our immunity. And we can't stop living until that time. IMHO

ColbyFootball

Just heard U of Arizona developed anti-body test and is testing 100,000's of people. And they plan to fully reopen in the Fall. I hope they lead the way for other schools.

Some interesting comments here.  My thoughts on them follows.
Bucket....Middlebury to me always had a educational schedule arrangement very different from almost all the other Nescac schools....Tri semesters, multiple schools around the country.  Many of the schools do not impact NESCAC sports though.
Trin8-0...very impressive bunch of student-athletes.  The size of the linemen and some DBs put a scare in me.  Oh well, hope they are "slow afoot".  Just kidding.  Amherst and the other conference schools will again need to play catch-up.

How can they absorb this many kids onto their roster? They'd have to cut upperclass players or recruits. I guess this is ok if the kids are recruited with full disclosure that this is how it works at Trinity.

gridiron

Keep in mind there is a movement afoot to expand the rosters to 85. That was prior to this new world order so my guess is people have not been focusing on that. However there is definitely momentum at some schools to expand.

bhm390

ColbyFootball- I'm not sure how transparent Coach Devanney is with his recruits about this. I'm assuming that the more honest you are to a kid who may take some time to see the field, the more his chances of committing might take a hit. Kids want to play. I do know that a few upperclassmen are cut every year, obviously related to their perennially large freshman classes. The coaching staff wants to see kids develop. While I like the idea of keeping the 75 best football players regardless of grade, I agree with you that it needs to be explicitly stated during the recruiting process that you have to compete for your spot every year. Each Trin recruiting class is usually whittled down to under 15 or 20 by the time they get to senior year- either kids are cut, or they quit because they realize getting meaningful playing time is a lost cause. My guess is that you won't see this entire group in uniform for the first game.

amh63

Yes, another opinion on the "large" number of incoming players.  In most of the Nescac schools...including Amherst...there are the usual thinning out of the football squad.   The academic/sports load are heavy ones and a FY will drop off the squad to adjust...get stronger/bigger..work harder/longer on academic matters.  Then there is the change in position due to faster, bigger, etc. that may result in a transfer.  Then there is the injury factor.  All will reduce the squad on the field for a particular game/period.
Trinity has one of the best/formal support system for it's football program...academic....in the conference.
My class..all male class in the Dark Age was relative small to reduce the enrollment down to 1000.  Yes, the FY football players played against other freshmen.  However, Amherst varsity football squads...along with Williams, l believe...Exceeded 90 players.

A sort of "loose coins" post here...on a day where New England got snow in May.  Scanning the Nescac schools for info, I was delighted to read about the latest progress/construction update on Bates' newest science building.  I had posted on this board about the construction of  Amherst's newest Science Building...maybe too much for posters.  In any case, I got to read a Bate's story wrt to a Bobcat that got drafted by the Patriots as a fullback...Carr'66, a player in my era..that scored 30 touchdowns. Note....there was no Nescac then so Carr did not play against the Lord JEFFS.  However, the story mentioned that Carr's touchdown record...quite a achievement...was tied by a Hickey'88 at Bates.  Question to Bobcat posters....was the Bobcat's Hickey  related to the Amherst Hickey'18, also a runner....about the same size as the famous Bobcat Carr.  Note...Amherst's Hickey scored 24 career TDs in his injury filled career.

AMH 63

Chris Hickey is the Bates RB who tied Tommy Carr's record. His son Jack Hickey was the best back in the NESCAC in his junior and senior year at Amherst.

Carr was drafted by the Patriots in 1966. I'll post kind of an ironic personal story from August of 1966. The Boston Patriots scheduled an intra squad game at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy which was a huge event for the Quincy area.  I grew up in North Quincy and probably had the greatest experience of my young life (so I thought) at 10 years old when I was one of 2 local kids who were selected as ball boys for the game.

I don't remember Tommy Carr as I was in awe of Babe Parilli, Gino Cappeletti, Nick Buoniconti and especially Jim Nance who was the nicest, classiest pro athlete I've ever encountered. I didn't realize Carr played in that game until years later while attending Bates I found an old program from the game and realized there was a Bates guy on the Pats roster.

I checked the record book at the time and have conferred with many older Bates guys over the years to confirm that Carr is arguably one the greatest Bobcats of them all.

By the way....it seems the counter for "post" on this board is broken/faulty.  I have noticed that my posts number has remained the same...posting on different days and different months.  Having checked on different boards.  Seems other posters on this board has the same "problem"...what's up management :'(

amh63,

This is how it has worked since we moved to this board software in 2005. When you make your next post, all of your previous posts will be updated with the new number, etc.

A bold claim to make about an RB who graduated in the same class as Max Chipouras.

lumbercat

Not bold when you consider that Hickey had 100 less carries than Chipouras as a senior and 85 less carries as a Junior. Chipouras was a great one but Hickey the best for my money. He stats would be a lot different in that Trinity offensive running scheme.
