Again you're right on.
Within the thin recruiting class is a FY RB from NJ who is said to have significant promise but hard to count on a FY as we know.

We scouted the NJ FY RB from Old Tappan HS...team plays higher-end NJ public HS football (think Ramapo, Wayne Hills, Rumson FH, Phillipsburg, Sparta, Willingboro, etc.)...Cory Booker is an OT alum and played at Stanford...Mouehla is decent player, runs a little tentative, however....better defensive player than offensive player but we know what UBates needs him to do...

BTW, our pre-season nominee for NESCAC "name of the year"...'24 QB for UBates...Park Penrod (no relation to Dirk Digler)...

I still like Bates +180.  The big four are gonna play the second and third stringers if things get out of hand.

Yeah Middlebury is massively overenrolled as well to the point that its giving students half off board to live ten miles away.  I think every Nescac campus is gonna be pretty swollen for the next two years at least.  Maybe not a bad thing - they all turn down so many uber qualified applicants and all could stand to grow a reasonable bit anyway.  I've long beaten this drum (without much support) for Williams which has basically doubled its campus square footage without adding much enrollment over 40 years and currently has at least three buildings on campus just sitting vacant with plans to keep building.

Football dorms, nescac1???

Hmmm, don't know how I miscounted so badly, I guess I must have failed to count first years.  My bad.  In all events, 72 (or more) is far, far, far less dire than 59.  Coach Raymond succeeded with fewer than 72 in his second and third year at Williams, although of course, the quality of the top guys in the program was as high as anywhere, which helped make up for the depth deficiencies.

Only 2 of 16 electing to stay really hurts.  This may create even more distance between the top half of the league and Bates and any other teams who are similarly-situated, because at Williams, Midd and Wesleyan, at least, it seems like the top seniors are generally back for a fifth year, and I bet the same is true at Trinity, Tufts, and Amherst.

Too bad about Tyler Bridge, what a big loss.  Surprised Colby didn't try (or maybe it did?) to poach him ... seems like Bates has basically none of its TBs from last year returning?  Costa may have to do a lot of the work on the ground.

The wager stands nescac1  ;D

As far as HCOF Malik, mold issue aside, we heard he was officially let go about 30 days before it was announced and the main issues (no pun intended) were poor recruiting and weak fundraising, which unfortunately, in this almost post-COVID world has fallen on coaches at the D3 level...

NESCACMAN-

You and your correspondents continue to operate on your perennial third party pipeline. Nevertheless I love reading your propaganda.

Coach Hall's departure was posted here within days of when it came down....go back and look. You "heard" late.
This "we heard" stuff is getting really suspect for you and your correspondents.

As a warning to the newcomers and especially parents on this board NESCACMAN is a good guy who works hard on this stuff. He is a showman and very entertaining but if he doesn't have anything significant he makes it up.

This board can't live with you but we can't live without your great entertainment value.

Great post- right on with Penrod name thing- he's a Pittsburgh kid from a championship team who they say can sling it. We'll see.

Mouheila will be a project but great physical tools.

Lumber, thanks, we think...

Usually the "slingers" are south and east playing for the Polars...hopefully your slinger ends up doing better than their slingers...last hyped slinger for the Polars was "McCrummy" as a reminder...

Since it's going to be a really long season in Lewiston, especially with no tailgating until at least October 1st, if you make it south for a game, let us know...we'd love to enjoy an adult beverage or two with you...cheers!

Thanks for the offer. I am a Boston guy but these days I split time between the Boston area and Kennebunk. Ill be in Kennebunk for most of the fall. When the NESCAC season ends we go south to Boston area.

I will see the Bates Amherst opening game at Garcelon Field in person on 9/18 by hook or by crook. I have some good strategic spots on the Bates campus where I can watch the game undetected if they actually impose these over the top restrictions.  A nice advantage of having Garcelon Field in the center of the campus. Many sight lines.

The Bobcats then go to Middlebury. I usually don't make that trip to northern Siberia, much longer ride than most realize.

I'll be in Lewiston on 10/2 when the Whale and his ringers come to town with a 90 man roster..... yikes. The whale boasted and bragged 10 years ago when he got to Wesleyan that he was going to have something to say about expanding the 76 man Nesacac rosters.....10 years later the bigman got his way....by Covid default.

Might catch you in Medford on 10/9 after a grabbing gourmet subs from Bobs on Main St in Medford a stones throw from Ellis Oval.

Just looking forward to the season though it looks to be painful one for the Garnet and Black.

Good night Vic Gatto wherever you are!

Lumbercat....why do I think Harvard when you posted Vic Gatto?

lumbercat

Vic Gatto was a great RB at Harvard. Most remembered for his role in the great comeback against Yale in 1968 in a battle of undefeated teams for the Ivy League championship. THE GAME of 1968 is often touted as one of the greatest comebacks in NCAA history.

Gatto was hired by Bates as HC in 1973. He was the youngest Head Coach in the NCAA at that time. He coached at Bates for 5 years in a rebuild of the Bates Football program.

They are currently looking for another Vic Gatto in Lewiston.

Did you see "the Game" from 2019......now that was a comeback and the Harvard Freshman running back was crushing it. Triple overtime, only light was the score board (thanks half time protesters delaying the game for an hour). I talked to the Yale president the next day and was told the Ivy league powers to be said no 4th overtime, it will be a tie, Yale wouldn't of been co-champs if that happened

Amherst's orientation just started...big incoming class of over 500.

Wes has booked the entire Inn at Middletown for the year for use as student housing.

Middlebury went a step further and bought a local inn–The Inn on the Green—for student housing this year.

Yes I did see the 2019 game, another great one. Sadly, THE GAME of today pales in comparison to the 60's when they would perennially  sell out the Yale Bowl (65,000) and Harvard Stadium (40,000+). It was a huge event.

It truly was THE GAME in those days.

The Mole

Check out Harvard Beats Yales 29-29 by Kevin Rafferty. DVD and book. Phenomenal interviews with players from both sides, including Gatto. Great behind the scenes vignettes--a player dating Meryl Streep, Tommie Lee Jones and his roommate Al Gore and many others, Extremely well done. Captured the essence of what was going on in a tumultuous time in our country (sound familiar)?

Gatto was at Tufts and then Davidson as well.

Thanks all wrt "Gatto".  Fond memories in Cambridge/Boston.  Spent my Thanksgiving holidays at Amherst in Cambridge.  My older brother at Harvard took care of me...lived in Harvard "House" rooms and spent Thanksgiving on the Cape one year with my brother's future wife's relatives. Returned to Cambridge in '68-'70 to go full-time at MIT grad school.  Remembered "The Game" then.  Almost as crazy as the Harvard-Dartmouth battles in Cambridge.

Lumber....we'll see you on 10/2...hopefully the UBates tailgating ban fades away on 9/30 as per the website...our researchers tell us that the Wes roster is 96 strong at this point, not including any walk-ons....not sure you'll see all 96 making the bus ride to beautiful Lewiston, but we're sure you'll see at least 60...and although Whales may make the trip depending on how busy of a sports weekend it is in Middletown given his AD duties, the Cards are in excellent hands with the most successful coach in program history (based on winning %-min 40 gms coached), Coach Dice, leading the "mysterious ministers of Middletown"....

Trin9-0

Earlier today Trinity sent an email about Homecoming Weekend, October 1-3 (the Bantams welcome Middlebury to the Coop). The note included the following mask rules for campus events (emphasis added):

"Masks are required at all on and off campus college-sponsored events; masks must be worn in all indoor locations and all outdoor college- and student-sponsored events and gatherings including designated outdoor athletic events based on expected crowd size.

I'm unclear if that means masks will be required for spectators at Jessee-Miller Field. There is no mention of a tailgating policy and while proof of vaccination is required for visitors it appears that will only be enforced for those attending indoor events or events with a rain location.

DiCenzo's .697 winning percentage is impressive. That actually puts him ahead of Ritter who is at .658. Granted that has been sustained over a 20 year coaching span. They're both looking up at Mills (.764 over 22 seasons) and Devanney (.834 over 16 seasons). Raymond is one game over .500 which is saying something considering the mess he had to clean up.
