We expect UBates to announce their new HCOF tomorrow around midday. If we were Bobcats, we'd be excited...

The Mole

I agree, going to make things pretty interesting in Lewiston

Appears to be a good hire for Bates ... and a bit of a loss for Wes. What say you nescacman (known for obsessing over former coaches)?

Wow excellent choice for Bates and Huge loss for Wesleyan. Coach Coyne is an energetic Coach who players love to play for and had a huge success turning around the Wesleyan defense at the DC and LB jobs. He always kept games close against the powerhouse teams when at Wesleyan. I think he will do really well at Bates perhaps not this year because of the late start in recruitment and choosing his staff. However the less stringent admissions requirements at Bates will help him. Sources have stated that Wesleyan the last two years with new admissions people really tighten the admission policies and hard to get talented recruits.  I believe a couple of recruiting classes in Coach Coyne he will at the least make Bates competitive.

Wesleyan is going to have a big loss there. I think Coach Stanley will get the DC he comes from a D1 pedigree and has turned around that DL unit at Wesleyan. I think a great hire for Bates !

The Mole

Charlie, you are right about everything but your "sources" saying that the new Wesleyan admissions people are making it hard to get talented recruits. I have specific examples of student athletes that Williams, Middlebury, Amherst could not get admitted/could not support but wound up at Wesleyan last two years. They are not marginal recruits.

I am not saying they are rejecting every candidate but even based on your statement I think you will agree that it is more difficult to get into the schools you mentioned. When it comes to the B-Band and C-Band admissions criteria they are coming down harder or should I say being more stringent than in the past. This was said directly by source in football program. Do not know why but being told there are new people in admissions. What was once acceptable criteria for admittance and support are being scrutinized more closely. I am being told 2021 but more specifically in the 2022 recruiting class admissions was tough on these band of athletes.

The Mole

Quality, not quantity. You have to nail your top recruits regardless of the band limitations. It has not been an impediment to attracting and getting the right kids.

Imagine where Coyne would be right now had he just stayed at Williams and learned under Coach Kelton's tutelage instead of transferring to Wesleyan.  Most likely would be leading a Big 10 program.  Alas, he'll have to settle for NESCAC.

We are very happy for Matt and glad to see he got his chance. We give UBates credit for giving a young, smart coach a shot. When we spoke to him today, he was obviously excited and ready to get going. Not going to be an easy build at UBates. As we said to him today, we just hope they support him and let him put his program in place. He knows what is takes to build a winner having played and coached under Whales with the Ephs and then Wes and then working with Dice at Wes. Our feeling is that if he gets the Bobcats to around .500 (5-4/4-5), they are competitive week to week and they win their share of C-B-B titles, it will be a huge win for UBates and HCOF Matt. Matt's a good recruiter, but for all the reasons we have discussed over the years, UBates is a challenging place to recruit. With that being said, he has a plan for attacking that issue that is sound and should work.

As far as Wes, Matt was a very good, loyal coach for many years at Wes (and Oberlin in between). We know that his colleagues, players, parents and alums all like and respect him. He also did a great job recruiting. He will be missed but let's face reality, no one is irreplaceable. Although Matt was the DC, let's not forget that Dice was the DC when Whales was HCOF and was still heavily involved in the defensive game plan and play calling (sounds familiar, doesn't it Patriot/Coach BB fans?). Yes, they'll have big shoes to fill, but Dice knew this was coming down and will quickly announce his reconfigured coaching staff for the 2022 title run.

Lumber, guess we have to be nice to UBates now. BTW, this definitely makes week#1 a little more interesting in Middletown.

I think the logical replacement is Coach Stanley extremely knoweledgable and comes from D1 pedigree in Penn State . He is primed for the position.

Sean's a great guy and has a tremendous track record with the DL for the Cards, including coaching reigning DPOTY Nick Helbig. We'll see...
