I think the Ephs have great deal of talent needs and OL next year going to be a big problem. RB position seems like Medical unit. Frishetti always hurt and Marvan has been injured throughout his career. So This will be a need in recruiting as well. Williams cannot afford anymore busts in recruiting they have found there QB and now need to work on skilled positions and Defensive and Offensive line help.

Marvan's "career" has been this year.  Hopefully this is a onetime thing and he contributes next season.

Ephs have had a lot of injuries this year - lots of guys in sweats last weekend. Especially hurts when you have a smaller roster.  Sounds like that will become less of a competitive disadvantage in coming seasons.

One of those was a starting OL, so his return should provide a boost next year.

2023 Week #9 NESCACMAN Picks

Welcome to Week #9 in the NESCAC in "The League where they pay to play"...NESCACMAN was 4-1 in week #8 to take us to 28-9 for the season...Rivalry week here in the NESCAC....2 key games (our Games of the Wee) this week that will help determine who wins the NESCAC 2023 Football Championship...one features our #1 ranked team, Middlebury, hosting the Tufts Jumbo's and the other, Hartford State visiting in-state rival Wesleyan...the rest of the schedule is lackluster: the Bowdoin travels to Colby, the Lord Mammoths host the Ephs in Amherst, and UBates will try to get win #1 at home against the Alexander Hamilton's.

Onto this week's games:

Bowdoin College at Colby College (5:00 PM): Bowdoin NESCAC Ranks: Total Offense 3/Total Defense 3; Colby NESCAC Ranks: Total Offense 9/Total Defense 6...134th game in this rivalry dating back to 1892; third longest rivalry in D3...Bowdoin has not won in Waterville since 2010...This game is for all the marbles in the biggest little pillow fight in America, the C-B-B title...Bowdoin is coming off a bad loss to Amwurst, has now lost two games in a row and their defense has given up 62 points in the last two weeks...Meanwhile, Colby is riding their own 2 game losing streak and their offense has scored a grand total of 6 points the last 2 weeks...Colby has not been strong offensively and are middle of the pack defensively...Bowdoin has played better than their record indicates...what's gone wrong for Bowdoin? Too many penalties (last in the NESCSAC)...,too many turnovers (8th in the NESCAC in turnover ratio), and not enough third down conversions...Bowdoin starting QB Boel was injured last week and if he is out, that could present a problem for the Polars offense...RPO QB Robbie Long is the back-up and had played well in a change of pace role thus far in 2023 but we think it's a tall order for him to carry the Polars to victory in a full-time role...Colby going for their 4th C-B-B title in the last 5 years...KTV for Colby: Generate some offense...force Bowdoin to turnover the ball...stop the Bowdoin running game to force the back-up QB to pass...KTV for Bowdoin: RB Andre Eden and QB Robbie Long need to have a strong game running the ball...score 17 points and they win...avoid turnovers...reduce the penalties...Players to watch: WR Jack Sawyer (COL), RB Keon Smart (COL), LB Julian Young (COL), QB Robbie Long (BOW), RB Andre Eden (BOW), LB Max Jacobs (BOW), LB Koy Price (BOW)...Overview: Without Boel playing, this game is a toss-up. Unfortunately for the Polars, this might be a preview of the 2024 season if Boel does not return next year. First team to 17 points wins. Flip a coin but we like the hot and cold Mules to win a close one at home in the frigid twilight air of Waterville. Diehard alums and parents will be the only fans at this one, we're afraid.

Colby 17 Bowdoin 14
Point Spread: Colby -3

Williams College at Amwurst College: Williams NESCAC Ranks: Total Offense 6/Total Defense 8; Amwurst NESCAC Ranks: Total Offense 10/Total Defense 7...The battle for second place in the Little 3...meaningless game in Blanketville...Lord Mammoths have lost the last 3 games to the Ephs...Lord Mammoths coming off a three game losing streak finally scored more than 17 points in a game last week...Lord Mammoth QB Mike Piazza had a career day; too much to expect him to do it two weeks in a row...BTW, best quarterbacking performance for Amwurst in about 5 years...Ephs coming off their epic 4th quarter collapse last week against Wesleyan...KTV for Amwurst: Keep the game low scoring...Generate some/any offense...Pass the ball well against the Ephs #9 ranked pass defense...KTV for Williams: Avoid turnovers...improve 3rd down conversion percentage (last in the NESCAC)...run the ball well against the Lord Mammoths porous run defense (9th in the NESCAC)...Players to watch: QB Mike Piazza (AMH), LB Luke Harmon (AMH), LB Andy Skirzenski (AMH), QB Owen McHugh (WIL), DE Cameron Smith (WIL)...Overview: We think the Lord Mammoths and HCOF Mills do enough to confuse the young Eph QB to win this hapless match-up in Amwurst.

Amwurst 17 Williams 14
Point Spread: Amwurst -3
Weather: Mainly sunny. High of 50.

Hamilton College at University of Bates (Lewiston Campus): Hamilton NESCAC Ranks: Total Offense: 7/Total Defense: 9; UBates NESCAC Ranks: Total Offense: 8/Total Defense: 10...UBates still looking for their first win of the year...Could be a high scoring game as these 2 teams are 9th and 10th in the league in scoring defense...HAM came back to earth last week after winning two straight...UBates has won the last three match-ups in this series...KTV for Hamilton: Return to what worked two weeks ago...run the ball well against the Kitties last ranked run defense......KTV for UBates: Avoid turnovers (UBates is last in turnover ratio in the League)...Pass the ball well against a HAM team that does not defend the pass well (8th in the NESCAC) or get to the QB (9th in sacks)...Players to watch: QB Colton Bosselait (UB), QB Seneca Moore (UB), WR Sergio Beltran (UB), LB Matt Juneau (UB), TB Matt Banbury (HAM), QB Luke Kurzum (HAM)...Overview: This is clearly a rebuilding year for UBates as they start to look to 2024 and beyond...we think the young UBates squad gets their first win this year against a HAM team that is playing for nothing but pride.

UBates 24 Hamilton 20
Point Spread: Pick 'em

Tufts 27 Middlebury 24
Point Spread: Middlebury -3
Weather (courtesy of The Weather Channel): Sunshine and clouds mixed. High of 39.

Hartford State College at Wesleyan University:  Hartford State NESCAC Ranks: Total Offense 1/Total Defense 1; Wesleyan NESCAC Ranks: Total Offense 5/Total Defense 4...To have a shot at the upset, Wesleyan will have to play at least as well as they did against MID...Big challenge for the Cards against NESCAC's version of Bishop Sycamore...Wesleyan has won eight in a row at home...Wesleyan leads the NESCAC with 5 defensive TDs ...Wesleyan's strength has been passing the ball...Hartford State runs and passes well...The Roosters come at you with 3 good RBs; any of them would start for moist of the teams in the league...The Roosters don't have the speed they have had in past years on the outside, but Fetter has been accurate and is very comfortable throwing to his big Jersey target, Sean Clapp... Hartford State is tough to run on but Wesleyan is a pass first offense to that may not be a factor...KTV for Hartford State: Keep Fetter upright...avoid turnovers...pressure Wes QB Candido...KTV for Wesleyan: Pressure Fetter...stop the Roosters running game...score another defensive TD or two...NESCAC DPOTY Candidate DB Wesley Abraham shuts down Hartford State WR Sean Clapp...Players to watch: RB Tyler DiNapoli (HS), WR Sean Clapp (HS), QB Niko Candido (WES), WR Chase Wilson (WES), WR Thomas Elkhoury (WES), LB Joe Schaeffer (WES), DB Dylan Connors (WES), Wesley Abraham (WES)...Overview: Will not be easy for Wes to come away with a win but we have a feeling that the big home crowd and playing for a piece of the NESCAC title will motivate the Cards to play at their highest level of the year...Candido throws for a Wes record 440 yards and carries Wesleyan to a huge upset in the Turducken Bowl.

Are any NESCAC football fans, besides Trinity fans, not rooting for Wesleyan this coming Saturday?
I suspect we are all Wesleyan fans this Saturday, except those on this board who are Trinity fans.

Hope Trinity wins by 80

Might get your wish...

Looks like Trinity just barely covered. Fantastic game in all three phases of the game for the Bants. Sean Clapp may have locked up OPOY with 10-172-4.

Yikes. The aforementioned 2005 Trinity loss has nothing on this one. This is the new "worst" Wes loss. The 2005 loss was a winless Wes squad fighting for its life against an undefeated Trinity team which might be one of the most dominant teams in NESCAC history. And it was in Hartford. This was supposed to be a contest between "near peers" in the division (which is very clearly not the case). At home. Oof.

Still lots of work to do in Middletown.

Polar Bears down Colby easily, 35-14 (game was not actually that close) behind back-up QB Robbie long, who played very well and slayed the Mules for the second year in a row only this time he brought an excellent passing game.mit is the first CBB crown for Bowdoin in many years and the first win at Colby since 2010. Colby was at even more of a disadvantage than Bowdoin as it started an untested freshman.

Quick-

I think Colby started Keeling and pulled him- but maybe I'm wrong. Sadly, at least from my perspective, they put Keeling, a senior, back in with about 4 minutes left trailing 35-7............Maybe his line shoulda been "Thanks Coach, do want me to win it or just tie
it up?"

I was watching/listening to the Colby play by play feed with an announcer who was the worst I have ever heard. Don't understand why these NSN announcers are not managed/trained. The NESCAC obviously pays NSN to cover games.

No excuse for a guy calling the Colby games to not know the numbers of at least the skill position guys for Colby and their opponents as well. Hell it would take about 30 minutes of preparation.
If I'm NESCAC AD and a Netcast with a totally ignorant announcer like Colby had today was going out to my parents, fans and Alums I'd have a real issue with NSN.

FY Chris Milmoe started the game and played intil the last drive when Keeling took over for the final Colby touchdown. It was a bit of an odd call for a game of such consequence of the two teams since Milmoe had not taken even one snap as best as I can determine. And Keeling had been the starting QB since the thrid game of the season . .

The NSN play-by-play is often awful (this is true for all sports), and this guy was particularly bad. They don't know the names of the players and, when they do know them, they sometimes mispronounce them.

We'd rename it Bantam State Memorial Stadium because we own it, but, really, who wants that mud pit? We did notice the only players to consistently fall down were Wesleyanne receivers.

Is it time to think if it's time to move on from Coach Dice. Arguably the worst loss in Wes history yesterday. But hey it's alright they won the Little 3!

The Mole

Replace Dice? No. Bad loss, for sure. Running up the score and creating more uncomfortable end of year league meetings, yes. Lack of sportsmanship beyond the standard trash talking, yes.

Your fingers slipped as much as your secondary; you meant to type 'not running up the score' because The Bantam State could have dropped 3 or 4 more touchdowns easily.

Shame the Mighty Roosters couldn't get it done at home against Middlebury . . .
