"MULE".  Kick in the "ASS".  I see what you did there.  +K for a little humor on a quiet board.

RetiredMule, I will be a bit more direct in what PolarCat suggested. You DO NOT appoint a player captain to make him a better leader. You find the best leader, and apppoint him captain. Especially a junior. As I've said before, doing that has placed Colby in a very difficult position. And, unless Michaeles has the guts to pull the plug on Harrington if need be, it will be the single most damaging decision he's made.

As for Ecke, I agree with you 100%. He will be a terrific slot guy.

But in the end it's fun talking about this and seeing how it  plays out.

RetiredMule

I tend to agree with you NewtoNescac. I really do.  I do not support the promotion of a junior to captain under 99% of circumstances.  And I think giving a captainship to promote good leadership rarely works out.

On the other hand, I am a Colby Mules ex-player and for that reason this situation works out for the best.  I also hope that Michaeles, as you said, has the guts to do what is needed if it is needed.  But only time, and a few weeks of actual football, will tell.

Like I said, it's fun to speculate about how things will play out. My prediction, based on Michaeles' history of last season until now, is that he will give Harrington at least the first 5 games, because he's a captain. Maybe more. And that would be a terrible shame for the players should they start 1-4 or 0-5. Just my opinion.

NewtoNescac:

A "last season until now" seems very short sighted and simple to judge Michaeles view points.  He will be entering his 4th season.  Season 1, he pulled a QB after a game and a half, season 2 he stuck with one QB until fail and season 3 he stuck with Harrington and occasionally played Ecke in a few situations late in the season.

He is someone who has shown the ability to yank a starting QB.  Admittedly it is harder with a captain QB, but all remains to be seen with the upcoming season

RetiredMule, for Colby's sake I hope you're right. But, let's not forget he had Opgenorth running the offense before last year. My sense is that Michaeles allowed his OC to call the shots. An admirable quality. It worked with Opgenorth, but was a failure with Fogarty. But, we'll know in a few months how this plays out. Again, for Colby's sake I hope you're right.

Never an expert on QB picks...but find it interesting that the discussion here mirror the ones in the NFL and the top tier Div 1.
The Maine school football games seem to be taking on  the intensity...to an outsider...as the ones found in the "little three".  I guess it was always there.  This season with the changeover at Bowdoin and the continued rise of Bates, it will be be more interesting....considering Amherst travels to Bates to open the season and Bowdoin coming to Pratt Field on Oct.3!.
Been invited up for the Bowdoin weekend by Amherst...room and board paid.  Thinking seriously about it...to check out the Polar Bears uniforms. :).

amh63, you have to love what Amberst football represents. An expectation of excellence, and an expectation that they will compete for a Championship every year. That's what C, B & B should aspire to. Nothing less.

Enjoying your posts.
On the subject of Colby QBs I was curious as to where Ciero landed. Early rumor was Rochester and then Foedham but he is not listed on the preseason roster at either school. Any idea where he will play this year?

Lumbercat -- I just did a search on the Colby directory and found a Justin S. Ciero listed as a member of Colby's class of 2018. Is he perhaps returning to Colby and repeating a part of his sophomore year (or did he withdraw before completing his sophomore year)?

lumbercat

Thanks Quicksliver- that's puzzling. Maybe he is staying at Colby....but thought he didn't have that option.

NewtoNescac

If Ciero is returning to Colby to play football that will really throw a monkey wrench in things. If so, will he be given the chance to start at a QB?

lumbercat

If Ciero is returning he will be the starting QB without question.

amh63

The Colby QB story is developing into a "novel". ;)  I will await the Fall release.

NewtoNescac

LumberCat, when you say Ciero will be the QB if he returns, I hope you mean he will win the job over Harrington and the others. In my opinion, he should have to be clearly better than the other QBs to get the job. Harrington and the other guys have been part of this team, and cannot be stepped over. If that happens, the Colby program will take yet another giant step backwards.
