As far as reporting goes in the NESCAC I would have to say that I always get a chuckle out of Amherst's site, right before I want to puke after hearing how the brave boys managed to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat using their superior intellect or some other crap.

Yes, I am an Eph and I hate them.

Trin 8-0, you can probably relate to this but they used to regularly accuse us of being on steroids in the late 80's/early 90's when they were out partying most of the week - in and out of season.  We knew this since a lot of us actually made some good friends with some of those guys.  Their priority was partying and not working out.

Ephmen1991,
Sorry to see your emotions are so negative.  A suggestion to lower your stress level.  Avoid reading the articles on the Amherst web site.

Funny, since usually at Amherst, we think the writing on the Williams Sports Information site is abysmal and is the epitome of homerism.  http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Homerism

You're right that a Sports Information Director should have more oversight.  It's not uncommon for students to write the bulk of these stories, and occassionally their school loyalties get in the way of decent journalism.  There's been a decline in quality on the Amherst Sports Info end in very recent years, but considering the amount of turnover in the position (it used to be a postgrad fellowship at Amherst where the SID changed every 1-2 years), the overall quality has been high.  Now, at a school where the SID has been in place for many moons and you still have these issues...that's another story.
#3 for 3...good!

Best Players through Week 2 around the league??? Lets toss around some names.

LiveforSaturdays

Offense - Shea Dwyer 6.1 per carry 150 for the season 2 TD's averaging
Defense - Cyprian Oyamba 15 tackles 3 sacks in 2 games

McKillop at Middlebury is the Off MVP so far

Trin9-0

#3350
Offense:
No doubt that Middlebury QB, Donald McKillop is the frontrunner for offensive MVP.  His passing statistics are, once again, cartoonish.  WR Pat Noone from Bowdoin has also been a star averaging 152 receiving yards per game with 2 touchdowns.  He's only a sophomore and he leads the NESCAC in all purpose yards, racking up 304 receiving yards and another 207 in rushing/kickoff/punt return yards.

Defense:
The official stats indicate that Cyprian Oyamba actually has 2.5 sacks and 13 tackles (he also has a forced fumble and a fumble recovery).  That's very impressive but Amherst's Edwin Urey has 4 sacks and 14 tackles 6 of which were tackles for loss.  Meanwhile Trinity LB Walter Fallas has more than double the total tackles of either player averaging 15 tackles per game and has an interception and a fumble recovery.

Special Teams:
Bill Donahue is second in the league in scoring and is a perfect 5 for 5 on field goals (though 5 for 7 on PATs).  Middlebury kicker, Anthony Kuchan is 11-11 on PATs and 1-2 on field goals (though the one miss was a 24 yarder).  Trinity's Grant Kunkel leads the NESCAC in punting with an impressive 42.3 yard average. Teammate Harry Melendez leads the league in punt return yards, average and has the longest return of the year, a 34 yarder (he also leads the league with 3 ints).

whos gonna win the amherst middlebury game this weekend. thats usually a good game.

WesfootballInsider

and also any other picks for this weeks game???

LiveforSaturdays

Bates
Williams    Williams in a rout

Bowdoin    Bowdoin
Tufts

Hamilton
Trinity        Trinity in a rout

Colby
Wesleyan  Wesleyan in a close one

Middlebury
Amherst     Amherst

Trin9-0

I went 3-2 last week against the point spread at www.nescacblog.com (8-2 on the season). My picks for this week:

I like Bates +14.5 against Williams.  The Bobcats play surprisingly well at Williams.  Their past three games in Williamstown the margin of defeat has averaged one point per game and in '03 the Bobbies pulled the upset 10-7.  Williams is the superior team and will get the win but 14.5 is too many points.

I'll take Bowdoin -2.5 over Tufts.  The Polar Bears struggled to turn redzone trips into touchdowns against Amherst but I think they'll be able to convert more often against the Jumbos.  Tufts has only scored 18 points this season and that was against some poor competition.

Hamilton +14.5 will keep it closer than expected against Trinity this weekend.  Give me the Continentals with the points against a Bantam squad that's coming down off a huge win last week.  Hamilton is hungry and looks to have more depth than previous seasons. Trinity wins but by less than 2 TDs.

Another underdog pick with Middlebury +6.5 over Amherst.  The Panthers have beaten the Jeffs three straight years and McKillop & Co. are averaging 40 points per game this season.  The Amherst defense may slow down that high powered attack, but they won't be able to score enough to stay with Midd.

Give me Wesleyan -6.5 over Colby.  Both offenses have struggled this year but the Mules defense was pitiful at Middlebury on the road and they have long trip down to Middletown this week.  This is the toughest game to pick for week 3 but I think the Cards take it by at least a touchdown.

Enjoy the games and GO BANTS!

Doustian,

After reading the Williams-Bates recap on the Williams web site I guess you might have a point there.

On another subject - I would have like to see Dave Caputi pick up a win at Tufts.  Bowdoin always seems to play a tough game in Medford.

mariner75

Another close game in Medford & a gutsy performance by the Jumbos.  37 yard FG at end to regulation to tie & a 35 yd FG  to win it in OT as they semi-controlled the vaunted Polar Bear aerial game.  Looks like Tufts finally found some offense.  Now the serious part of the schedule begins.

Sports writing is generally read by fans, and fans don't want journalism. They want cheer leading. Require that observers of football be impartial, and 90% of the audience disappears.
