Several points to keep the conversation going until the first games this weekend.   Cost/money is not the question here.  Bates' addition of lights to its game field was to help the students for practices, once a turf field was added.  I got the info from the Bate's web site.  The previous practice field was a distance away.
The last several years, I have attended games at Hamilton, Amherst and Wes. and there were no ticket charges for games.....even for Amherst's homecoming (previously for homecoming there was a 5 dollar charge).
With respect to the Amherst vs. Williams game, attendance can reach 12K.   Both schools have enrollment less than 2100.
That is in many cases with other sports underway elsewhere.
In any case, the season starts this Sat.  I also would like to know how the "scrimmage" went...bias or not report.

Plus, for anyone who has ever been in northern New England in the evening in late October or November, night games would be BRUTALLY cold and would scare a lot of fans away.

Most of the schools which play night games do not play them in late October or November anyway, aside from, say, southern California.

One thing that would be nice about a night game, I will admit, is to avoid situations like next Saturday, when Williams plays Amherst in men's and women's soccer at home at basically the same time (but across campus) that it plays Trinity in football, so fans will be split between two big rivalry games.

I'll toss this out, pre-season favorites for player of the year:

OPY: 1. McKillop (obviously), 2. Lupo, 3. Noone, 4. Galligan
DPY: 1. Schultz, 2. Katz, 3. Sherry, 4. Fallas

A few notes based on the Williams-Bowdoin preview:

http://athletics.williams.edu/sports/fball/2010-11/releases/Bowdoin_Game_Notes_9-22-10

Williams' defensive alignment looks exactly the same as last year.  In fact, the entire front seven returns, and that is clearly the strength of the team as 4/7 are returning all-conference guys, including the conference ROY Cameron and arguably the leading candidate for DPY in Schultz, plus LB Johnson also has all-NESCAC talent if finally healthy.  There is great depth at those spots as well.  Secondary is more of a question mark with two new starters and no all-NESCAC guys returning.  Cole switches from WR to CB to shore up that spot.

Schultz, btw, I've seen referred to as both a Junior and Senior, it is his fouth year at Williams but only third year playing football (due to a year lost to injury), I wonder if he will find a way to play a fourth year at Williams, or maybe try to move up to a higher level while attending grad school.

Offense has one change in alignment, now starting two RB's instead of a third WR. From the look of things Tom Wohlwender will be at FB.  Could be a change in philosophy to a more power oriented game, or perhaps just trying to better utilize personnel, given the Ephs' wealth of incoming talent at RB.  Whalen, his last few years, almost never employed a FB.  Virtually everyone on the offense has starting experience, and the running game should be very stong.

I completely agree that adding a night game to the schedule would not be an effort to bring in money. As I said any increase in attendance would be from students (who receive free admission to football games anyway).

The reason I would like to see a night game added is because I think the student body and more importantly the players would LOVE it.

I generally think most NESCAC attendance numbers are a bit inflated but for what it's worth I've listed the average attendance numbers (listed at www.nescac.com) for each team's four home games last year.

3,383 - Trinity
3,307 - Amherst
2,638 - Tufts
2,482 - Williams
2,471 - Middlebury
2,350 - Wesleyan
1,467 - Bowdoin
1,210 - Hamilton
1,070 - Colby
1,050 - Bates

The largest crowd was 8,131 for the Trinity @ Amherst game.
The smallest crow was 300 for the Middlebury @ Bates game.

nescac1, I think that's a very good assessment of the Player of the Year candidates.
NESCAC CHAMPIONS: 1974, 1978, 1980, 1983, 1987, 1991, 1993, 1996, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022, 2023
UNDEFEATED SEASONS: 1911, 1915, 1934, 1949, 1954, 1955, 1993, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2022

Some random site lists Williams among the top ten places to watch college football.  Kinda ridiculous, but hey, I'll take it :):

That is weird...part of the blurb says this - "and the school's New England location all but guarantees blue skies" - that doesn't sound much like New England

Just surfed the nescac football page and came to learn that Eric Mangini is 4th all time in the nescac for sacks in a season.

And Hamilton has the record for least points in a season for 24 points in 2006?  That's horrible.

Really, you just do this for "fun"? At 37 yrs old, a D3 football groupie? That's really... weird. It just seems that for all the time you seem to have checking for spelling errors and driving around northern Wisconsin, there wouldn't be any meaningful time for much else  ;D. In the past, I've driven to a few games to see my sons play, or family friend,s but ..... These days I'm retired, but I don't even seem to have enough time to play much golf. OK, fare  ;D enough.  Good on you for doing your thing.

Yep. Hey, you're the one who started ragging on people's education but couldn't spell correctly. And then proceeded to call people names. Not sure you add anything to the board.

LOL, Pat. Naaaaaaaah, I, the proud messenger, was just posting some good NESCAC news: that Williams had won yet another Directors Cup, been selected  the # 1 college in the country, and to celebrate all the other NESCAC schools that were commended recently as well. This is a NESCAC thread, and we should all be NSCAC fans here, right? Just fun news for a NESCAC thread during this slow NESCAC pre-season. Other folks here shouldn't feel threatened or envious of this stuff, and if they do then that's their problem ...and it's really pathetic.

We're all fans here-- not touchy feely schoolmarms-- so let's celebrate success when good news comes, and if people razz each other about how lousy their school is or how bad their football is than it's all just part of the college game. Check out how civil some Big Ten football sites are sometime. I don't know, maybe these sad D3 glory day folks, need to be coddled. So when Jonny called me clueless ( and believe me, my family could not agree with her more ) I was just having some fun back at her and, I think Lewis whore adults ( oops, should that be "who're" ), who seem to enjoy a laugh as much as anybody.

My spelling sucks, I know, but here's something from you, Pat ( regrets that I could not enlist the quote function for this ):

You: "  Knightstalker, there was a note in the atory (sic) on the front page of both sites regarding what you should do about post counts.

..............but here's my favorite from you:

You: " ....... but yeah, nitpicking and obfuscation will easily get you a minus-K from me."

Yes, Pat, we must not nitpick.

Anyway, I have a son playing his last year of NESCAC ball and I check in here to see if anyone has anything to say about upcoming games, etc. I think NESCAC ball is a hoot and my son has a blast playing. He's a good kid and I'm very proud that he's getting a good education. Me, I came to this country from Albania when I was 14 without knowing three words of "American". English, as you can see, is still a work in progress for me. It will always be my fourth language. No worries, I worked hard and eventually landed on my feet. I went to Michigan State... and played football there. ( No, I was not a kicker! ) I got an excellent education and went straight to med school. I've had four kids in NESCAC ( two football players ) so I'm a big NESCAC fan.

I don't think that NESCAC  Fri. ( or Sat.) night games would work because, as Frank U stated, alums/parents would be forced to travel at inconvenient times--mostly too late or just after work. Years ago NESN tried to get Amherst and Williams ( "The Biggest Little Game" ) to agree to a Thursday night game and it was quickly rejected.  I doubt much has changed on this front. NESCAC athletic depts used to ( still do? ) schedule sports like field hockey, soccer, cross country events earlier in the day if they coincided with home football game dates so that alums could make a day of it. At Amherst, most morning games were finished in time so that athletes could see the second half of the football game. But as for Friday or Saturday football games, they wouldn't be well received by most alums, especially rivalry games. The Little Three, for example, would never go for this. It's too bad in a way. My oldest son used to play in front of 9K people on certain Friday nights in high school. Nothing like that would ever happen in NESCAC unless it was Williams-Amherst. I agree with the poster who noted that there's something uniquely "high school" about night games.

Now what I'm looking to see on this thread are game predictions from the cognoscenti for the opening weekend . So, what have they got to say?

Pallos I don't think you get it.  Everyone knows Williams College is one of the best colleges in the world and that they have one of the best d3 sports programs in the country.  No one on here would argue either of those points.

The point everyone would agree with is that you sound like a clown.  No respectable person would write the things you have been writing on this site.  That tells me that no one here should respect you or what you have to say.  I for one don't care about you, your football career, your kids, your kids football carreers, how many beers your kids drink on the weekends, or how many girls (or boys) they sleep with in college.

We all love to talk football here and often drift to other topics in a respectful manner.  Read a little and learn about how respectable people act on a message board first, and then maybe you can get a small clue about how the real world works.

Again, no one cares how smart you or your kids are.

Bowdoin vs. Williams - Who gives a sh!t

Amherst vs. Bates - Who gives a sh!t

Hamilton vs. Tufts - Really, no one gives a sh!t

Middlebury vs. Wesleyan - Who gives a sh!t
