The kids that graduate from the NESCAC schools will be running the country soon, and the kids that are in the NEFC schools are continueing thier educations the best they can within thier own capabilities and abilities.  Both are very admirable.

How did this quote get missed?  Is this serious?  Unintentionally hilarious BTW.

Agreed, there are some not-so-good NEFC schools academically, but while a small percentage of NESCAC grads go on to 'run the country', there are just as many regular working stiffs like the rest of us that have normal jobs and happy lives and don't run for president.  Just like there are many of the same out of Ivy league schools.  I know quite a few Harvard grads who, while successful, don't 'run the country', haven't cured cancer, and haven't invented Post-it notes.

Let's not make every NESCAC grad out to be an Einstein or a Kennedy.

Oh I was about to post something about it but I decided to just let it alone.

Also if a recruit's girl friend plans to attend or is attending, don't be surprised should he choose to follow her despite other factors to the contrary - generally not the best of reasons, but 17 year olds are not infrequently unreasonable. Similarly for family connections.

Great post actually.  I've heard and seen this happen and it's ABSOLUTELY true(not to mention ridiculous).  There are maybe .01% of these situations where the couple actually stays together, and in those cases, I kinda feel bad for the person who didn't get to 'experience' college.  I know, there is likely some hopeless romantic that will disagree with me, but I just don't think it's a very wise choice.

This happened to my brother. You see this a lot on TV and they end up getting married (i.e. Saved by the bell, Boy Meets World, other annoying 90's TV haha). Definitely not real life.

A friend of mine actually made this work out......neither side got to "experience" college though.

I always felt like I had way too much going on to have ever been in one of those types of relationships. I actually was dating someone going into college but we went to different places and that never works.

Point is, I think Frank and LD are right on, it's amazing to think about the decision making processes of 17-year-olds.

What sucks is if you follow a girl to an NEFC school, lose the girl, AND you lose your chance at running the country.  Terrible choice right there.

82 Slice...welcome aboard!
Lumbercat....thanks for your memories.  It brought back memories and corrected some of my "DARP" stories.  One was that he was more interested on the defensive side.  He had great coaching talent on the sidelines to assist him.  One of his early top assistants went on to coach at Trinity College and Trinity's football field is named after that former Amherst assistant coach..who was an all-american QB at the U. of Delaware and helped bring the wing-T formation to Amherst.
One of the reasons "Darp" may have chose to remain at Amherst is that he had two of his children attend Amherst.  One brought a smile to my face when he helped beat Williams on the football field by scoring on a long run as a result of either a kickoff or punt return (my lapse in memory).  There are many more that define the coach and that is why at homecomings and reunions one can see dozens of people wearing baseball headgear bearing the word...DARP.....it has also become a tradition.
Sean Clancy played his last years at Miami and presently resides in South Florida.

I guess my wife and I are the exception....We just celebrated 43 years of marriage. We dated in high school, went to different colleges 1500 miles apart, then got married...together a total of 49 years. I can't believe she has kept me this long.

That's quite  an impressive relationship, +k!

The people who end up running the country come from a pool of bloated ego jerks wanting to run the country and who make a mess of their effort much like the messes the country finds itself in today.

amh63: That assistant coach after all these years continues to coach football as an assistant at Coast Guard. In 1981 Jan Ostendarp broke Williams' heart by returning a punt 92 yards for the winning points against Williams, the final score being 21-17. At the 2005 wake for Jim I chided Jan that his father probably said to him "what are you doing returning a punt from the 8 yard line". Jan responded to me that his father has long forgiven him.

amh63

Frank....Thanks for the "rest of the story" so to speak.  After my post, I went to see if I could find the particulars about Jan's efforts.  His '81 run still to this day remains a record.  It must have been Fate!
