Many, many, many years ago it was the practice of the baseball crowd to glide their skimmers onto the field after the end of the Labor Day doubleheader.

To fans of D-3 football everywhere.  I am honored to have been asked to spread the word regarding a new cancer fund that has been established to help Tom Pattison, UW-W sports broadcaster and founder of www.warhawkfootball.com    I and my family know, all to well, how a cancer diagnosis can be devastating to a families daily lives and finances. Please, consider making even the smallest donation to Tom.

The following is an open letter by Retired UW-W Coach Bob Berezowitz:

Team Tom Cancer Fund Drive established

Once a Warhawk, always a Warhawk are the often spoken words by Tom Pattison, longtime "voice" of the Warhawks. Over the many years of broadcasting UW-Whitewater football, basketball and baseball games on KOOL 106.5 (and prior to that (940 WFAW), Tom has "bled purple" during each one of his broadcasts.

Unfortunately, on May 28, 2012 Tom was diagnosed with advanced stage 2 colon cancer. He underwent colorectal cancer surgery in Fort Atkinson and in the process has developed astronomical hospital and medical bills.

Tom has already gone through the first phase of radiation treatment at the UW Cancer Clinic along with chemotherapy with phase two starting later this month.

Tom has given his heart and soul to Warhawk athletics over his 25 years of living here in southern Wisconsin. He served six years as the president of the UW-Whitewater Quarterback Club and still serves on the club's board of directors.

In 2003 Tom founded Warhawkfootball.com where Warhawk fans, players, former players and parents have been able to view up-to-date Warhawk football news and information 365 days a year. Nearly 1.5 million visitors have clicked onto the Website over the years.

The Website that has been funded entirely by Tom has been a popular "voice" for Warhawk football fans not only locally but around the world.

Well now Tom needs your assistance in his battle with cancer.

With the help and leadership of UW-Whitewater Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Paul Plinke and former Warhawk football coach Bob Berezowitz and KOOL 106.5 Radio a team has been set up to lead a campaign to raise funds for Tom.

The "Team Tom Cancer Fund" has been established through Commercial Bank in Whitewater and is now accepting donations.

Donations may be sent to: Team Tom Cancer Fund, c/o Commercial Bank, 200 South Freemont St. Whitewater, WI 53190

The fund raising drive will also include Tom Pattison Day at Perkins Stadium on Oct. 6, 2012. More details will be announced shortly.

"I have known Tom for many years while coaching and now in retirement," Berezowitz said. "There is not another person who has given more of himself to help promote UW-Whitewater football. He is always writing articles for both past and present players that are published on his Website.

It is now our turn to say "thank you" for his efforts by considering making a donation to the to assist Tom in his time of need.

Go Warhawks,

Most NESCAC programs conducted some sort of intra squad scrimmage this past weekend. Next weekend will be game scrimmages. Can anyone help with the time and location of the different matchups throughout the conference.
I know in the CBB that Bowdoin pairs off with Tufts while Bates plays Colby. I believe Bates travels to Colby this year and Bowdoin hosts Tufts but that is unofficial.
The team websites don't seem to provide any detail. Appreciate it if anyone can provide specifics for those interested in catching a scrimmage this weekend while we wait for the short season to start.

Personal wish:  That the game times varied somewhat.  It would be nice to be able to see my Trin boys and also catch a Wes game down the road, or a Tufts game on the way home.  I am sure that the presidents have set it up this way so that some dastardly evil people won't get an advantage of some kind.

banfan.....yes you can also blame the faculty too.  I tend to believe that the faculties of the schools are to blame.....a 9-game schedule would have increased the workloads due to the fact that the academic schedule would need to be changed.
Still, your wish can be hindered a bit due to the shorten daylight and the fact that not all schools have lighted fields....it can get dark around 5 PM.  Amherst will have them next season!

great point Banfan- as we all know there is seldom any inclination toward change in the NESCAC. A major move for this conference was moving start times to 12 or 12:30 later in the season or when teams have a long bus trip.
The problem with scheduling a game later in the day on Saturday is travel. Unless the teams are fairly close to one another I don't think a later start makes sense.

However Trinity-Wesleyan and the Maine schools would be prime oppotunities for a later game or a night game.
Don't think "The Game" should or would ever be changed given the tradition and the TV coverage. That game was meant to be played on Sat afternoon on real grass
A night game(s) has been discussed in the CBB and I believe remains on the table with Colby and Bates being the possibilities. (No lights at Bowdoin). In the NESCAC it will probably take an act of congress to get it done.

Trinity-Wesleyan would be a great one to schedule at night- would bet it would draw a huge crowd at Trinity.

I believe the Colby-Bates scrimmage may have been played under the lights in the past. By the way, that scrimmage is schduled for 5:00 at Colby this Saturday.

I don't have detail on Tufts-Bowdoin scrimmage- can anyone help on that one?

I assume Middlebury scrimmages Hamilton?

Bowdoin at Tufts
Friday, September 14th at 7:00pm
Not on the game field, on the practice field off College Ave across from Cousens Gym.

Lumbercat....after 2013, "The Game" will be played at Amherst on turf!  IF/when Williams gets its new field, I believe it will also be turf.  Things do change.......maybe the contest will even be moved under the lights.....TV or not.....since it can be streamed these days.
Makes sense that the Friday scrimmage at Tufts be at the practice field.  The game field does not have lights, I believe?

Thanks for the info FourMoreYears.

There you go Banfan--you can catch Bowdoin/Tufts Friday night and still see the Bantams on Saturday.
Tufts played the Bants tough last year. You can hand Devanney your scouting report on Tufts when you travel to Middletown on Saturday (kidding-red flag).
On a serious note if you do attend the Tufts scrimmage I'd love to get your take on Bowdoin and Tufts--I would have planned on making that scrimmage but will be out of town.
Tufts is rebuilding under the direction of a Bantam. Bowdoin looks young but gets their injured QB back.

Good point Amh63- I forgot that the plan is in for the new Amherst facility that will include field turf.

What are they doing at Williams, will that be converted to artifical turf/lights also?

I'm not close to either school but can't imagine they would ever change the time of their game but who knows.
It's televised locally here every year on NESN (New England Sports Network).

NESN was doing 2 or 3 NESCAC games a year a while back but have discontinued that with Williams-Amherst being the only NESCAC game they cover.

In Maine, Colby Bates Bowdoin games have been periodically picked up by local network affiliates over the years dating back to the 60's.

Beyond that we are totally dependent on internet broadcasts which can be frustrating as you know.
Probably not realistic for the NESCAC to form a conference cable network as the Ivy league has done. NESCAC proabably way too small for an endeavor like that though it would be nice to have cable TV access for NESCAC sports. But who would watch it beyond alums and parents.

And why wouldn't I give Devanney my scouting report along with film?  I will definitely try and make both and will report vague and misleading information to this board as soon as I can create it.  Mom and Dad and Grandfather and Brother are Tufts undergrad, Medical and Vet School grads but I have to support Trinity.  Tufts did play their best game last year against Trin.

The current plan provides for completion of Williams' roughly 25 million dollar football/track facility, including turf and lights, in time for 2013 football games. Of course Williams' plans can change and in the past have changed. Originally plans were for completion in the fall of 2008.

nescac1

Wow Frank I hadn't heard that.  Is that public?  Does Williams have funding in place?  Will the facility be dramatically different from the current design (aka track still inside bleachers, other major differences?). Why would it cost so much more than the Amherst field?
