Tufts...interesting info!  Amherst once brought in portable lights for its practice field...which was moved tempo when the new turf field was being built on the old practice field.  Should be interesting this Fall when the new football field is finished.  Lights and turf while the present practice field is grass and has lights.  The coaches had found the practice field somewhat size restrictive.
Gridiron...interesting perspective of conference schools.  Need to be flexible as time passes.  Amherst gets many impact players from New Jersey and out of the NE area.  Flexibility in admissions is always on a relative basis and as Frank U points out among candidates that have good academic records.  Amherst, like Williams, has high application pools and low acceptance rates...13 percentage..for its incoming classes.  It's "bands" may be narrower than some other conference schools and therefore require more flexibility at times to admit students...be they athletes, low income students from weak school systems, etc.  Note that includes veterans!

Enjoying the preseason chat thus far.  This from the Kennebec Journal (Maine) on Colby/Bowdoin/Bates.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: No 2 ways about it for Mules this season
By Travis Lazarczyk tlazarczyk@centralmaine.com
Staff Writer
PORTLAND -- If Colby College head football coach Jonathan Michaeles has his way, the Mules will rely much less on two-way players in 2013 than they did in 2012 ....

Gridiron -- I need to ask you to provide a link to the story rather than copy and paste it in its entirety here. Sorry.

No problem.  Didn't understand the protocol---thought referencing the publication and writer's name would cover.  Here you go:

I may just be being too careful but I know I'd like someone to visit our site if the positions were reversed. :) Thanks.

Food for thought over the weekend...

Here's a question for the prognosticating pundits out there...

Which group of NESCACs will get the most wins in 2013??????

       1.  Massachusetts schools:  Amherst plus Williams plus Tufts
       2.  Maine schools:  Colby plus Bates plus Bowdoin
       3.  Connecticut schools:  Trinity plus Wesleyan plus Hamilton—(CC wouldn't be fair)

Leaving Middlebury out, just because it is easier that way for this exercise...

In my view night football is so very high school.

Never attended a night football game when in high school...schools did not not have lights then.   Did go to to my kids' night games some...nothing special.

if this where a Prop Bet , I would be all in.....Conn 14 wins ( without any Hamilton)  , Mass 8 to 11 wins  , Maine 8 to 10 wins

the Night game is very exciting and could add recruiting benefit as the one sticking point with good recruits is the 8 game schedule of course and the boring start times since the late 1800's

I must repectfully disagree. Had a great time and saw some great games during my son's high school career.

BCS games are high school? Hmmm.  Teams would play on pavement at dawn if they could get that 9th game.

NCF...disagreement can be a positive event :).  The key word is "special"...night versus daytime.  It probably has to be the level of the game rather than the time of day.  I jogged my memory a little and did remember a high school night game when I was in high school.  Each year our coaches would seek an early game against a good opponent outside our city league.  Senior year, we went up to Lebanon Pa. to play a tough team in a night game.  We got beat by a young OB, named Dick Shiner, mainly.  He went on to star at the U. of  Maryland...the first of a long line of All American QBs for the Terps.  Later in the year, our team played for the City Title against the Catholic champs at RFK stadium.  The day game was special even when we lost.  The games at my kids local HS were good games at night, buT not as good as the the one daytime game for the state title at Terps stadium.
Guess this is a long explanation to define special for me.

BCS games are so very commercial. If they are played at night, they are so very commercial and so very high school.

I'm in concert with amh63 in that night games are best for "special" games.  Williams v. Amherst under the lights would be electric (pun intended). Of course, given the prevailing opinions of the participants of this blog, Williams would lose...by a lot. Maybe Williams v. Colby would make for a better match up? Sure would be "special" for Colby! Love the blog guys :) Good luck to all the boys and may the best team win each week.
