thanks Gridiron and you know it fo sho , fo sho........4MoreYears bro I am seriously depressed today and your post just livened me up a bit......I like what I saw in Bowdoin last week and telling you if they can just get a little more passing or even just one completion to a Tight End , you can open that nice run game and get those extra first downs and everything that comes with that , time of possession and that extra score or two is all they need.....same goes for Bates as they have some very nice players , but their offense to me is worse than going to the Dentist or back in the Reagan years worse than getting the short draw straw and having to clean the Reactor Compartment.....I think Colby playing a sandwich game will win but could get back-doored covered there as word on the street is Tufts playing hard to the whistle and be nice for them to get a win so we don't have to rag on them all next summer about not having winning since whatever year it was...I am rooting in at least 10  Wesleyan Kickoffs so that equates to a hefty score , imagine if I nail that one though.....oooooh snaaaap I will come to life like never before......I wish we would hear more from NESCACMan to pass the week , but he makes those High Stacks of Society and word on the street also is that he doubles as the Wizard of Oz.

Al-
You deserve a lot of credit for injecting some life into this board. In the past the board often fell into a dead radio silence. Your posts are entertaining and reflect something we all have in common......a passion for NESCAC football. We all come from different perspectives but at the end of the day it's a lot of fun. I know you will be around for at least 3 more years and I look forward to it.
And remember when in Eastie keep your head on a swivel.

AMH63- thanks for your response on my recent post involving the changing of the guard in the NESCAC--agree with your points and, as always, eloquently stated. You are no stranger to the high road. Good luck to the Jeffs this weekend and I know that your Basketball arsenal is ready to roll.

Grid and Findthyone-
Good points on the CBB scene.

Saw the Bates-Colby game last week at Colby and came away with 2 conclusions:
#1 Colby is one of the top defenses in the league. They held the Bates ground game to 88 yards while no other team has held them under 200. While Bates has been decimated by an unbelievable quantity of injuries, the Colby D seems legit despite their bad performance this year in the newly forged "Cardinal Dungeon" in Middletown.
#2 conclusion: Colby is one of the worst venues in which to watch a game. The stadium design distance the fans form the action....there is a very wide, expansive area behind each bench, then there is the track and to move the stands back even further from the field there is a 10 yard wide berm with plantings....never been in a college football facility at any level where the fans are further form the field. From the first several rows on each side of the field you cant see anything over the payers on the sidelines. Assume they put a lot of emphasis on the Mules track program..... football took a back seat on the design of the new facility. Give the Blue and Grey credit for the best tailgating venues on historic Mayflower Hill.

No whining here but need to clarify the Bates situation this year. Their misfortune with injuries is unlike anything I have ever seen. 9 starters in the opener against Trinity have been out of the lineup for 2 or more games. While they are finally getting some guys back its been a disappointing year Lewiston. Believe you will see more depth in the Bobcat program in future years as the administration recognizes this need as they rebuild the Garnet and Black

After 3 games this year Bates had won 5 of their last 6 and their extensive rebuilding process was moving along exceedingly well- then a rash of key injuries kicked in and they went to the dungeon at Wesleyan at 2-1 with 8, yes EIGHT, starters out of the lineup...they held up well in the first half but the Whale just wore them down with that Wesleyan depth. They teed it up the next week with 2 of those 8 starters back in the lineup against the Snow Panthers and almost pulled it out.

As for the play selection comments, believe they intended to pass more but their starting QB was knocked out for the season after game 2. Since then they have alternated the 2nd and 3rd QBs and have lacked rhythm in their offense. The triple option is all about the QB and they have obviously struggled form that perspective....the heir apparent is on board but believe they intended to bring him into the option scheme slower than this. I know the option can be boring and may not be the long term fix but take a look at the Bates offense last year. They ran the option very well and deployed a solid passing game throwing the ball more often and more effectively than Trinity who won the NESCAC title.

Say what you want about play selection but Bates OC Weiss has put in the triple option and structured a very strong ground attack rebuilding a Bates offense that was dead last in the conference 5 years ago. He deserves an immense amount of credit. They will be fine with the Triple option and will be more effective overall as they work to back to their intended game plan of getting the pass/run balance more equalized in their attack. that's easier said than done when you are trying to work rookie QB's into the mix but expect a solid showing this week as they get a couple more starters back.

At the beginning of the year I'd call Bates a 14 point favorite at home against the Black and White but too many guys on crutches in Lewiston will make this a close one...................... but nevertheless another Bates-Bowdoin classic.

Amherst beats Trinity by 7
Colby over Tufts by 10
Wesleyan over Williams by 9
Middlebury over Hamilton by 20
Bates over Bowdoin by 8

Great info Lumbercat....and kids in my  Division 1 only territory  are starting to take notice on my FaceBook and inquiring about this D-3 NESCAC and will hope to bring awareness to the 3rd World Country attitude towards D-3 football where I live at as I could stock a whole football team if these Third World Country High Schools knew how to send an EMail........Mr. NESCAC commissioner if there is one needs to at least pay me gas money as I first started in Beverly tonight ( actually Beverly Farms) and the bartender there coaches baseball at Phillips Andover and we started talking and hyping it up and if my old pal John Updike was still alive ( Beverly Farms Resident but now dead and very famous American Author) I would get him fired up and maybe he would write a quick novel about NESCAC football storylines and make Coach Whalen his main star character........then I went to Danvers and Peabody and nothing was going on there as they probably all spent out from the Red Sox run or whatever the phuck they do there , then I went to Revere as I run Revere , just the Yahoo Mafia don't realize I have all the customers because they are dinosaurs which makes Frank mad with his Old Timer references but like that academy award winning film...."No Country For Old Men".....there is no more Little 3 for Amhurt and Williams...it is Big One and Little 2....now I have had a few drinks tonite equaling about 14 Tangueray and Tonics  and was only charged for 2 at the Squires in Revere because they bartenders  luv me.......I am telling you the truth that everyone is rooting for Wesleyan.......never underestimate hype , never underestimate the other mans greed ( which is a Scarface Quote)....to put it simply..... Its Coach Whalens Time , It's Coach Whalens Crew's  Time , It's Coach Whalens due  Glory , It's all of Wesleyan Alumni Time , Its Wesleyan O'clock on the hour every hour this week of the Williams game......I am no sucker and the smartest guy in every room, and when I complained heavily about the 8 games and no play-offs and this and that ( about football , not the academics ofcourse)......... I shook a Man's Man hand and said ok bro 32 -0 it is then........matter of fact , but "Just Win Baby"

Week #7 NESCAC Preview and Power Rankings

Welcome to Week 7 in the NESCAC. This week we will once again give our regular weekly preview of the upcoming games and our weekly power rankings for the NESCAC. Let's get it going...

We had a good week picking NESCAC games going 3-2. The Trinity/Middlebury game could have gone either way. Experience at QB and home field advantage ultimately proved to be the deciding factors for the Panthers. We were somewhat surprised by Colby's dominance of Bates. Colby seems to be coming on when it counts and can close out the prestigious 2013 C-B-B title (or B-B-C according to Bowdoin fans!) next week against the Polar Bears of Bowdoin.

As we head into the stretch of the 2013 season, there are several interesting games on the schedule this week. The battle for the prestigious C-B-B title (or B-B-C if you are a Bowdoin fan!) continues this weekend with Bowdoin travelling to face Bates. In an elimination game, 5-1 Trinity visits 5-1 Amherst. The game that has Wesleyan fans buzzing pits the Cardinals against the visiting Williams College for the Little 3 Title and at least a share of the 2013 NESCAC Football Championship. The other games on the schedule are Hamilton facing Middlebury and Tufts travelling to Waterville to take on Colby.

Week 6 NESCAC Power Rankings

1. Wesleyan (Last Week #1): An uneventful (for the most part) win #6 for the Wesleyan Football Cardinals. They are the best team in the NESCAC through 6 games. They are also the #1 D3 team in New England in the latest coaches poll, are #5 in the Lambert Meadowlands D3 Poll for best team in East, and they are ranked #36 nationally. In the words of our friend Al Davis, they steamrolled Bowdoin with a "caveman" offense running the ball 48 out of 63 plays and passing the 200 yard mark on the ground. For his 167 yard/2 TD effort, Junior LaDarius Drew was named NESCAC's co-offensive POTW. Jesse Warren was his usual efficient self (12-14, 2 TD passes and no INT's) and the defense played very well giving up only 14 points. Wes once again dominated in three key areas: time of possession (35 minutes to 25 minutes), penalty yards (25 yards for Wes to 26 yards for Bowdoin) and turnovers (plus 2 for Wesleyan). As we have said, winning those categories 9 times out of 10 spells victory as it did this week for the Cards.  Wesleyan will be playing for two championships in weeks #7 and #8 (the elusive Little 3 Title in week #7 and the NESCAC Championship in week #8). First up, Williams...a team Wes has not beaten since 1999.

2. Amherst (LW #3): How do you turn over the ball 6 times and still win? Has anyone ever heard of Tufts? This game was not as close as the 17-7 would indicate. If Amherst wasn't minus 6, they would have won by at least 40. Check out these stats: Amherst ran 108 plays compared to 61 for Tufts, Amherst had 515 yards of total offense compared to 116 for Tufts (7 yards net rushing...yes, you read that right), Amherst had 34 first downs compared to 12 for Tufts and Amherst won the time of possession battle 37 minutes to 23 minutes. They will give Trinity all they can handle this week. The winner will still have a chance for a share of the league title. The loser will be fighting for third place and will have had a disappointing year by either teams standards.

3. Middlebury (LW #4): The good news...they still lead the NESCAC in total offense and passing offense. The bad news...they are still last in rushing offense and continue to turn the ball over way too much (minus 2 for the year including 11 interceptions). They did what they had to do in beating Trinity to have a shot at a share of the NESCAC title. They will be a big fan of the Ephman this week and the Bantams the following week as they need a Wesleyan loss to have any shot at the tie. They will coast the rest of the way as they face Hamilton and Tufts on their way to a 7-1 season.

4. Trinity (LW #2): Trinity is 0-1 as they are into the serious part of their schedule against Middlebury, Amherst and Wesleyan. Although they played Middlebury tough, they came up just short. They need to win out to have a shot at a share of the NESCAC title. Although they are solid, we have watched Trinity numerous times this year and this is not your father's Trinity Bantams. They are playing a freshman QB, who will be a star in this league, their offensive line is not as powerful as past years and clearly there is something not quite right with Evan Bunker. Still, they are 5-1 and are in the hunt. Game #8 should be interesting as they look to extend their 50 game home win streak against upstart Wesleyan. They need to take care of business in week #7 first.

5. Colby (LW#6): Surprising win for them against a weak Hamilton team. Their defense played very well last week limiting Bates to 86 yards rushing and forcing 4 Bates turnovers. I still give them better than a 50/50 chance of winning out and ending the year 5-3 and the C-B-B title. They play the inept Jumbo's this week, and then head to Brunswick to play the Polar Bears for the C-B-B title.

6. Bates (LW #5): Disappointing and surprising loss to Colby last week (at lease as far as we are concerned). They have lost 3 in a row as they head to Bowdoin this week. Three big reasons why they lost: minus 3 in the turnover department, too many penalties and they could not get their "caveman" running game going. We do realize the injury bug has plagued them this year, but injuries are unfortunately part of this particular sport and you need to do your recruiting and build your roster with that in mind. Therefore, no excuses. Bates did throw the ball so perhaps they are getting more comfortable with QB LaSpada opening it up a bit...or perhaps they were just behind playing catch up. Whatever the reason, our strong belief is that teams that are too one-dimensional will ultimately pay for their shortcomings (unless you are the 2013 version of Middlebury who fortunately for them do not have to play Wesleyan).

7. Williams (LW#7): Two in a row for the Purple Cows. Let's not get crazy, however, about how much better they are playing, how they are back on track, how the first four games were a fluke, etc. Earth to the Armchair QB Club...you beat Tufts and Hamilton who are combined 0-12 with 149 points for and 388 points against. If they can somehow even be competitive against their Little Three rivals the next two weeks, we will reassess their ranking and our view of them. However, until they prove us differently, we are sticking by our guns. There have been a few bright spots in recent weeks for the Ephs like DL James Howe who has 7.5 sacks the last two weeks (albeit against questionable competition). We are always suspect of subjective defensive stats in this league, but still, even if you discount the sack total by 50% it is impressive. The change in QBs (Marske for Murphy) also seems to be paying some dividends. Marske seems to be able to get the ball in the end zone almost as frequently as he puts it in the hands of his opponent (as opposed to his predecessor Murphy who only threw the ball to the other team). In our mind, they are still the "King of the Scrap Heap". They continue to be near the bottom in the NESCAC in turnover differential at -9 and in rushing offense. They pass a lot for a Williams team but, as evidenced by their ranking in passing efficiency, they don't do that particularly well either. In fact, they don't really seem to do anything particularly well. They are going to have a tough time the next two weeks against talented Wesleyan and Amherst teams.

8. Bowdoin (LW #8): We watched this team last week against Wesleyan. I actually think they are better (perhaps much better) than their record indicates. They have a decent defense and some talent on offense. The problem is their defense is on the field way too much and against teams like Wesleyan, they are going to get worn down, which is what happened last Saturday. Part of the problem is their overall offense is just not good (ranked last in the NESCAC). Our theory is that it all starts with the QB (see Williams above) and in our very humble opinion, QB Caputi (who may be the nicest kid in the world) is the worst starting QB in the NESCAC (last in the NESCAC in passing efficiency among true QBs...Bates QB Canonne in our mind does not count since he is more of a RB playing QB). We actually saw on several occasions Saturday Wesleyan defensive lineman (wide bodies mind you) chase down Caputi and catch him from behind on his runs. Until they upgrade that position (since Caputi is a junior and "knows" the HCOF pretty well...that's "Head Coach of Football" for neophytes of this blog...that is probably not going to happen until the 2015 season) their offense will languish despite a decent running game. They have a shot to get to 4-4 but it is not going to be easy against their C-B-B (or "B-B-C" as Bowdoiners call it) rivals.

9. Connecticut College (LW #10): Have lost "0" straight.

10. Hamilton (LW #9): An 0-8 season is staring them right in the face. Their offense is not good as evidenced by the fact that they are second to last in total offense to lowly Bowdoin. Their strong suit is their pass defense, which will get tested this week big time against Middlebury QB Foote. With a league worst turnover differential of minus 11, they do not give themselves much of a chance.

11. Tufts (LW #11): 29 in a row and counting. This week is their last chance for a "W" this year against Colby. Congrats are in order to Tufts for reaching new levels of ineptitude. I am not sure it is possible to be plus 6 in turnovers and lose. I guess when you run the ball 30 times and only gain 7 yards and give up 7 sacks, anything is possible. Jumbo Fun Fact: If Tufts loses their last two games, which they will, the class of 2014 will have gone 1-31 in their career with their only win coming in their first game as Freshman in the 2010 season. Yikes.

Week 6 NESCAC Preview

Bowdoin College at Bates College: Big game in Lewiston in this battle for the prestigious C-B-B title. Bates comes into this game not playing particularly well losing the last three games in a row with two of those loses coming against NESCAC powerhouses Wesleyan and Middlebury. The Colby loss does concern us as far as how they lost. Bowdoin comes into this game with a losing streak as well with loses to Trinity and Wesleyan the last two weeks. These two teams are pretty evenly matched. We likes Bates a bit more for two reasons. First, they run the ball a bit better than Bowdoin does (however, neither team throws the ball at all well) and second, it is a homecoming game for Bates and they should have a decent crowd rooting them on.

Bates 21 Bowdoin 17
Weather: Not a factor.

Tufts University at Colby College: Second worst game on the schedule this week. Despite the score, Tufts is coming off a horrendous effort against Amherst last week. Colby is coming off their best win of the season since shocking the Ephman in week #1. Colby's defense has been solid this year and their offense will score enough to best the Jumbo's. Unfortunately, another loss for the men from Medford. The question we have is how much more time will Tufts give Coach Civetti to win a game (he is 0-22 as HCOF). Our sources close to the situation tell us one more year.

Colby 21 Tufts 7
Weather: Not a factor.

Hamilton College at Middlebury College: Worst game on the schedule this week. I am going to go out on a limb and give Hamilton about a 1% chance of beating Middlebury (barring an injury to QB Foote). In our opinion, Hamilton actually may be worse than Tufts, which is saying a lot. Hamilton is last in scoring offense, last in scoring defense, last in turnover differential, and last in defensive pass efficiency. That last one is what concerns me against Air Middlebury. QB Foote will have a field day against the Conts and could very well have a career game (and he has had some good ones). Throw in the fact that it is Foote's last career home game and they still have a shot at the NESCAC title spells trouble for the visitors. This one could be ugly.

Middlebury 42 Hamilton 7
Weather: Not a factor.

Trinity College at Amherst College: I know our Amherst and Trinity viewers are not going to be happy that this is not our NESCAC GOTW, however, we have our reasons (see below). If Wes/Williams is 1A, this game is 1B. Should be a very good game between two very good D3 football teams. We have watched both of these teams play this year on several occasions. Both teams have their flaws, however, they are both very well coached and have talent on both sides of the ball. Amherst has suffered from some inconsistency at the QB position and they have turned the ball over too much (it would have cost them last week against anyone in the league outside of Tufts or Hamilton). Despite their failings, their defense has been outstanding led by a secondary that leads the NESCAC in INTs. Trinity's offense has played very well since they made the change to first year QB Sonny Puzzo. Their defense has also played well. We are a bit concerned about the lack of production from RB Bunker the last few weeks. He appears to be injured to us and despite some depth at that position (RB Crick has played very well) this is a concern. We think this will be a well-played, close game but we are going to give the edge to the home team as Trinity loses two in a row for the first time in a very long time.

Amherst 24 Trinity 21
Weather: Not a factor.

NESCAC Game of the Week

Williams College at Wesleyan University: Sorry Bantam and LJ fans but this has to be our NESCAC GOTW. All you have to do is speak to anyone with any ties to Wesleyan to understand how important this game is. A few of the reasons: 1). Wesleyan has not won the Little 3 title outright since 1970 (42 years), 2). Wesleyan has only shared in one NESCAC football title in their long history (1997) and 3). Wesleyan has never won the NESCAC Football Championship outright since the league was started in 1971. Wesleyan has a chance on Saturday to erase 1 and 2 and take a major step towards erasing number 3. Throw in the fact that 4 of Wesleyan's coaches (Whalen, DiCenzo (former Captain), Ludwig (former Captain) and Coyne) played and/or coached at Williams and you have the makings of a real important rivalry game in Middletown this week. Wesleyan comes into this game flying leading the NESCAC in scoring offense, scoring defense, total defense, rushing offense, pass defense and turnover differential. They are highly ranked nationally in many of those categories in addition to time of possession. They have also had some exceptional individual performances led by Junior QB Jesse Warren who leads the NESCAC and is ranked 4th nationally in passing efficiency (14 TD passes, 0 INTs in 6 games). Junior RB LaDarius leads the NESCAC in rushing (averaging 109 yards per game) and scoring (9 TDs). Williams will need to play an almost perfect game to have a shot at an upset. With that being said, this is a Little 3 game and for those that have observed these games over the years know that crazy things happen in these games. There will be a huge crowd at Andrus Field and the weather is going to be perfect for history to be made.

Wesleyan 28 Williams 14
Weather: Not a factor.

NESCAC Man's Picks
Last week: 3-2
Season (through six weeks): 24-6

Go Team!

gridiron

Neascacman---that's what we're talking about!  Thanks.  Can go about my day now and get ready for some classic Sat afternoon football now.

Your season record of picks is impressive.  Of the six games you did not get right, were there any teams that are repeat upsetters?  Or repeat underachievers?

Trin9-0

The last time Trinity lost back-to-back games was in 2009, which isn't too far back. However, if Trin loses Saturday to Amherst then their Nov. 9th game against WesTech could very well mark, not only, the end of the 50 game home winning streak but the Bantams first three game skid since 2000. Coincidentally that was the last time Trinity lost to the Cardinals.

Hopefully, Trin can bounce back after last week's heart-breaker in VT and stay alive for a share of the NESCAC title.  FYI, the last time there was a three-way tie for the NESCAC championship was also in 2000 when Amherst, Middlebury and Colby (yes, Colby) all finished 7-1.

I think there will be some upsets this weekend. I'll take the Polar Bears over Bates and Tufts to shock Colby. Why not, right? Let's not go overboard though, Middlebury will take care of Hammy with ease.

Finally, I think Williams will keep it close with Wes. Keep in mind that BOTH teams will be highly motivated and the Ephs, despite their disappointing season can still win the Little Three title. It's very unlikely, but still possible.

Also, there's a chance I'll stop by this game to visit with one of my best friends. He's a Wes grad living in San Diego and flying in just to see the Cards win that elusive Little Three. Should be quite the scene in Middletown regardless of the outcome. Al, keep an eye out for a handsome young(ish) man in a grey Trinity sweatshirt.

...Ok Coopster 8.0 and much respect and even though you are a handsome man I will not kiss on the lips like Amhurt63 does to Frank when they see each other , but will gladly shake your hand and do some jive talking fo sho , fo sho , true dat.....I will look for you but if I miss you in the crowd that expects to top 90,000 make sure to look for me as even though I am one of the lowest guys of least importance there just being a freshman parent , I do come across and appear like I am in charge of the whole situation , I am usually just by myself pacing around getting different angles of the game and have recently started talking to other parents but do keep to myself and sometimes briefly talk to the Whalen Mafia Crew who are very real and as from my previous posts poking fun at Providence , North End , Revere Mafia wannabees....the Whalen Mafia on the other hand is very real and you need to be very afraid of and you must know your place in the rank and file so I just walk by them and say hey Whats Up.......Win or Lose this shiiit is Strait EPIC ......and in August some people ragged on my hype .......but there you go , as you where and as you was......hype is good , hype is fun , hype gets everyone involved , hype is good for the soul , hype means you have a pulse and are alive and enjoy life.......for the time being at least this is the way it will be.....other schools will have to start working many , many extra hours and pound the pavement  much , much harder to keep up on whats going down tomorrow.

Go Continentals!

I'm heading up to Middlebury looking for elusive victory number one, I can't help but think that going to the pass can lead to good things happening for the Buff and Blue.  They seem to move the ball down the field against every team with relative ease and then are denied points when they go back to the run run run offense.  Chase needs to stay in the pocket instead of running all of the time.  He's a freshman so maybe his panic will ease and he'll start feeling comfortable under pressure.  Jensen continues to be a beast and is the most athletic receiver in the league.  They should also be throwing to Donadio more often.  On defense, Hamilton needs to be ready for all of Middlebury dump passes.  An aggressive pass rush won't be good enough to win this game.  Hopsicker is going to have to look for picks.  And, of course, they need to have someone cover the tight end at all times.

Hamilton will have players back from injury this week.  The added depth will be helpful.  The biggest key to this game will be whether or not HAmilton can hold Middlebury to 7 or fewer points in the first quarter.  If they can, Middlebury is in for a long afternoon!"

Chicks dig Wesleyan.  Damnation, sir; where were you when I was in my impressionable moment of need?
My grandson will thank you.

ok this NBA is bothersome tonite and not in the mood moving these lines.....I wanted to give a shout out to Go-Go's Continent as he shows great spirit and dude go for it , tell everyone what its all about , never give up , would be epic if they could win and Hamilton deserves some good fortune.......on the flip side I do believe Middlebury is not getting enough props and recognition , they are very good , very exciting and very well coached and Coach Ritter and staff deserve a great shout out and their body of work lately is real impressive as they will go 7 and 1 and wish some one would step up with 10 Million Dollars and make the Wesleyan- Middlebury game happen this year , that would be phucken Strait EPIC......and Frank I can smell your breadth from here at the Rocky Hill Sheraton.
