NESCAC Man,

We haven't found that perfect sandwich spot in Lewiston yet; we'll be arriving at 10:30 or so, hoping to snag a spot in the tailgate area, set up the canopy and the grill, and make our own.

If you are headed up from the Brunswick area, you can grab the world's best lobster rolls at Libby's market (42 Jordan Avenue; our lunch yesterday) or some terrific sandwiches at Wild Oats (149 Maine Street).  Lewiston may have similar places, but we haven't found them yet.  There will also be concession stands at the field.

We have found a great bakery (Grant's Bakery at 525 Sabattus Street).  In addition to delectable baked goods, they have delicious hot baked beans on Saturdays.  Maybe not a good idea for an indoor venue, but at Garcelon Field you can safely fill up on beans and toot for the Bobcats.

Another option: It's Bates Parents and Family Weekend, and the College is throwing a brunch from 9:30 to 2:30 at the Commons.  Tickets are $8.75 at the door.  Bates food may not get the same press as Bowdoin's, but it's pretty darn good.  Probably shouldn't wear your Cards attire, though; it would be embarrassing to have a food fight break out.

I can second these recommendations.  Both are favorites for us.

QuoteThis week, we are on the road again heading to Maine from our home base in New Jersey (the home of the best HS football in the country) ...

On behalf of the entire state of Georgia, I can only say "Bless your heart....you just don't get around much"  ;)

The new Williams College athletic complex is stunning! Had a complete tour of the well-integrated functional and beautiful facilities for football, track, field hockey, complete and large locker rooms, reception room dedicated to the legendary Mike Reily (see Sports Illustrated article-- selected as one of 60 best in 60 year history of the magazine), all co-located in town adjacent to Teconic Golf Course amid the colorful mountains this fall. Built in 10 months on budget of $23 million.

Also toured the outstanding new library about which the students rave, as well as remodeled and enhanced Clark Art Museum --an absolute gem filled with impressionist, contemporary, and other priceless works of art.

Excellent leadership by college officials, alumni, community, and contractors. In short, all these latest enhancements are a "grand slam walk-off homerun" with still more grand investments to come.

Stay tuned....

It's refreshing to read about a college that is investing major $ in its academic and arts facilities as well as its athletic complex.  Not surprising since this is a NESCAC school but a nice change nonetheless.

A little late, but...drive safe everyone on the road today!
P'Bear....Jumpshot sounds like a proud alum and yes, a little carried away.  The Clark Museum was featured several times recently for its modern addition and it is indeed a place for art lovers.  However, though it is in Willytown, it is not part of Williams College.  Private museum and a definite draw, as is Mass MOCA, a short ways down the road in North Adams.
My wife and I will take in the Clark again when I visit the new athletic facilities next season.  It's been awhile, hope the iconic eating places in Willytown are still around.  Suggestions are welcome. :)

Maybe off topic, but it would be the Capitalistic thing if some Parent, alum, fan publish a current guide to Nescac best eaties.  For those fans that travel around and enjoy good food, it may have a following.  Something for the young writers...ad support, etc. Even.

Should anyone care (which is doubtful), the Clark is world class to a degree that no (or almost no) other sites or institutions in or around Williamstown are.

Thanks guys...fearing bad food, we brought our own Italian Hoagies from Jersey. Goes great with Springsteen and the stogies.

I'm guessing it's not your style, Frank (just as the art collection at the Clark isn't especially to my taste, although I absolutely love the expansion), but MassMoca is also a world-class contemporary art facility.  While not technically a Williams facility, the Clark is closely integrated with Williams since they collaborate on the Master in Art History program, which uses both college facilities and the Clark.

Here's hoping that there is a big crowd on hand for the dedication on what should be a beautiful football Saturday in Williamstown.  The Ephs need to simply play better in all phases after two straight discouraging outings, especially on the offensive side of the ball.  They really need to open things up on offense and use the big tight ends and WRs (if Sime is back it would help) on quick downfield patterns over the middle of the field, instead of continuously throwing WR screens, wide, that get sniffed out quickly, and sideline patterns which they seem to favor.  I'd also like to see them get a few more touches for Connor Harris on offense, who brings some badly needed quickness.

Since you asked, amh63, I think the best spot for dinner in Williamstown is (still) Mezze, had a great meal there this summer.  Pappa Charlie's is always great for sandwiches, and Hot Tomatoes makes some good pizza.  Tunnel City is a great coffee and pastry shop, and is now practically adjacent to the football field.  There has been a lot of turnover on Spring Street with several new restaurants I've yet to try, so I can't really opine on those.  Still sad that the new Purple Pub, while quite nice, lacks any of the character, ambiance or sense of history of the old Pub ... maybe it just needs a few decades to get broken in ... but it would also help it they didn't keep it so sparse, and make it a true Williams bar, like the old Pub was.

Breaking news from Lewiston...Cannone not playing...Duggan at QB

Nescac1....Thanks for the food places.  When I would be in the area about a dozen times a year for business, I would go to a sandwich place...a place that would offer sandwiches named after celebrities that came in....like at the summer theater festivies, etc.  Really like those places.  Wife and I would eat at similiar places in Annapolis and on Pawley Island just a hop and skip up from Charleston.  Character places...often the sandwich places revealed political views in the naming of the sandwiches.
Is that sandwich place on a corner near the gym still around?

nescac1

Yup, Papa Charlie's is the sandwich place.  Different ownership, but nothing has changed, including the celebrity-themed menu, and the food.

At the half, Bowdoin trails Hamilton by a score of 6 - 10.  Haven't been able to watch much but it seems that Hamilton scored a TD after recovering a turnover deep in Bowdoin territory.

Mac Caputi is 10 - 20 (50%) for 139 yards, with 0TD and 0INT.  Interestingly he connected with Barone for a 50 yard reception.  This has to be one of the longer completions of the season.  Hopefully this is an indication that Bowdoin can establish a downfield passing attack.
