Island Time,

The unfortunate fact is that a great many of the NESCAC athletic admits are ED1 or ED2.  If you look at the Class of 2020 Facebook pages for any of the schools, you'll see a huge number of athletes.  The Admissions office tends to use Regular Admissions to create a balanced class: the tuba player for the band, the home schooled kid, the kid from an under-represented minority group, the kid who spent summers counting caribou in Saskatchewan, the legacy of the big donor who is dumber than a post, the token Conservative, etc.

Statistically, ED1 and ED2 are your best options if your sights are set on Williams, Amherst and Midd.

. . .

Polarcat -- there is no ED2 at Williams and Amherst.

The reason coaches use their tips primarily on ED applicants is because the strict numerical limits on tips require that the applicant be fully committed to attending the school that is offering the tip as the tip is lost if the applicant does not enroll after being tipped. . .

Correct....he moved from Tufts to W-town when she took there job there a few years ago.

NewToNescac and IslandTime- Strong support is not the best you can get. A "slot" is the best you can get, below that the "tip" and way low down is strong support. Ask the head coaches if they have used up their finite number of slots (14 at some NESCAC school)  in the ED round. Usually a tip plus some other desirable characteristic ( legacy status etc.) will result in admittance.

Thanks, I didn't realize that. I thought "very strong support" was the same as a slot, because my understanding was that even a "slot" was not a guarantee by the coach.

If your son is determined to matriculate in the 'CAC THIS YEAR, he should also apply to Bates, Hamilton and Wesleyan.  All fabulous schools, where the coaches may still be able to support him this late in the game.  And if his grades are good enough to qualify for Amherst and Williams, don't rule out Trinity (though they over-recruit every year, and lots of deserving frosh get cut in pre-season).  Finally, if he doesn't get accepted at the school he wants, don't rule out a PG year at Andover, Exeter, Tabor, etc.  Sometimes that is "just the ticket."

You do have one thing working in your favor.  All the 'CAC schools are deluged with applicants from New England and the Mid-Atlantic.  The Admissions folks love geographic diversity, so the fact you're from the Sunshine State is a plus.

Good luck, and keep us posted how it works out!

Hey, you forgot to recommend he apply to Colby, as well. lol

PolarCat

You're right.  Colby should be right in there with Bates,Wes and Hamilton.  And if the kid has good enough grades for Williams and Amherst, maybe Bowdoin should be in the mix, too.

Quicksilver, thanks for correcting me on ED2.  My kid's both went ED1 and I forgot ED2 wasn't universal.

PolarCat.....it should be pointed out that Amherst for a period did have a ED2.  Some of the CAC schools had other Admission practices that are/were used to attract desirable applicants.....Alum interviews, SAT scores not a requirement...like at Brown U.
Do like your examples of other factors.....token Conservatives, but question the "dumber than a post" example :).  Yes you do have a way with words.

Unless the Williams search committee hesitates to hire yet another guy with Trinity connections as their HFC Chris Rourke may be the guy.  It didn't work out for him at Bowdoin but Salary and contract terms should not be a problem at Williams.

Not sure if the "Hartford State" mindset exists in Williamstown, if not Rourke will be a very worthy contender for the job.

Article on the coaching search, listing many potential candidates (many of which are clearly pulled from our discussiosn on this board, but also listed are lots of other assistants with Williams ties):

Of the guys mentioned I think Joel Lamb is the dream candidate but probably unrealistic.  My money would be on Rorke, Morris, Gilmartin, or Perry getting the job.  (Of those, Perry or Rorke both look particularly enticing).  All sound like strong candidates with deep ties to the institution (or at least NESCAC) in one way or another.  Gleeson and Poppe are probably a bit too green without enough high-level coaching experience.

NED3Guy

Eric Ludwig is an under the radar guy who could be in the Williams mix.

All American o lineman back in 2005. Currently a coordinator in the conference, as OC at Wes. Looks like his wife is an administrator at Wes, so who knows if they'd leave that situation, but certainly a guy who deserves some discussion.

Morris seems to have the best background, but Perry would be a big time hire. He's a "crazy" character that would be excellent at recruiting, and he knows offense.

Ludwig seems a BIT green as well but another interesting name.  Perry I like just for the connection to Dick Farley -- anyone from the Dick Farley coaching tree who has go on to succeed elsewhere has to be given serious consideration, if interested.

All NESCAC

Great article on link....all would be worthy candidates.....Morris Perry Gilmartin will be leading the race given the Williams connection.

And in checking that Facebook page, the lecherous, dirty old man in me made another observation ...  WOW, are some of the incoming Bob-kittens cute!  My God would it be fun to be 19 again!

There is more than a "pretty face" in those pics....PolarCat! :o

Watched the D3 National Title game in Salem, Va. last night.  Game between two undefeated teams....St. Thomas and Mt Union...both 14-0!   There was a list of the undefeated teams in all of D3 posted....The two schools above and Amherst 8-0.  Surprising in a way.  Also surprising to me.... the school colors of all the schools appear to be Purple and White.  At least the primary color was Purple....no other color seen than white.  Technically, isn't White a non color.? :)..sorry Bowdoin.

westcoastDad

What's your prediction if Mount Union were to play Amherst?!
