PC-

Walls plight- it's of a different sort.

As for Walls blowing up an OL that was not the deal - but if he blew up an OL, snapper, or holder- that's not punishable in an administrative sense but will get a guy on the wrong side of the locker room......in a hurry- not good.

Similarly, any guy in the special teams fraternity that ever points the finger at a kicker for a blown kick would be reprimanded - cant have any dynamic like that  on any team.

Two years ago....same type of scenario at Middlebury.....and it rained.....which negated their passing attack.  Amherst got the W.
sure wish I could send some of my rain up there.

I just evacuated Merritt Island/Cape Canaveral due to Hurricane Mathew. Was planning on flying up and watching the Amherst/Middlebury game as my first NESCAC game. Totally bummed!

Hoping my home on the Beautiful Banana River is still there when I head back to assess the damage. Life is crazy. We went from anticipating a great weekend in Mass with a road trip to Middlebury to hoping our home that I built 18 months ago is still standing in 24 hours.

Anyhow.... GO AMHERST!!!

I spent the mid to late 70s on the panhandle in Panama City Beach, IslandTime.  I taped up the windows before leaving for more secure dwellings a few times.  I wish you the best of luck.

That said, GO PANTHERS!!! 8-)

PolarCat

Island Time, thoughts and prayers with you.  At the end of the day, a house can be rebuilt and there will always be other NESCAC games.  The important thing is that you, the family and your pets are out of harm's way.  Hopefully you wind up in a place with a good internet connection and you can watch the game online, and when you get back home you will find minimal damage - just enough to have some good stories to tell.

How about this for this weekend:

o   Wesleyan 28 @ Colby 10
o   Williams 07 @ Bates 21
o   Trinity 28 @ Hamilton 07
o   Amherst 21 @ Middlebury 07
o.  Tufts 35 @ Bowdoin 07

Middlebury ONLY wins if they have a 100 yard rusher.......:.

I can't see Middlebury gaining 100 yards rushing.  But, Amherst will need to stop the running game with simultaneous pressure on the QB.

I'm guessing lots of blitz packages forcing the QB to make accurate throws to his receivers.  Amherst would be advised to have the corners play press defense leaving their safeties for the TE and passes to the Panther backs.

If QB Morales is as advertised, we are going to throw even more than with Berluti.   If the OL is healthy like I'm hearing out of camp....the running game will be solid

First score wins.  First turnover loses.

PS. Amherst sacks will be a first for Panthers QB.  He's had no drama since fall camp began.  Not yet

Wall was suspended for conduct decrimental the team.....

One can only miss so many practices and training sessions before the coaches say "you are good, but not that good".

NESCAC.Football.Observer

Bottom line is he's known as a not committed player......  if one can call a K or P a real player......

I'd argue "in no way"......

PolarCat

Funny perspective.  K's and P's practice all year, for less than 5 minutes playing time a game, and are expected to be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT every second they are on the field.  An OL can miss a block here and there, a WR can run a bad route, a QB can overthrow a wide open receiver, a LB can miss a tackle and few will notice.  But a P that pooches one 20 yards or a K that goes wide right when the game is on the line?  They own that.  Lots of players can't handle that type of pressure.

The ONLY player who was on Ellis Oval practicing 45 minutes before the Bates game was Willie Holmquist.  I'd love to see you tell Willie he's not a "real player".

Remind us all again: What position did you play in your career?

westcoastDad

Other than Ray Guy.......he's probably right Polar Cat.  Punters and Kickers are usually not considered blue chippers.

Amazingly,  many don't get scholarships to our D1 schools.  They are usually walk ons that earn scholarships based on performance.

Not to say that they aren't hard workers and probably have more pressure on them than ANY on the team because they aren't allowed to make mistakes.

Regardless of the "what did u play in your career" question....which is always the lame way to go about an argument (oh, where did u coach....oh my Dad had more awards than u ever will....etc).....   I will say that from my experience, I see many athletes who are starters of the top 22 (ie McGonagle last year at Amherst) that can also be Punters or Kickers.  Heck, John Rak for the Purple Moose kicked very well for us last week.  He's not our starter on paper.

However, it's very rare to see an athlete who is a Kicker or Punter (as his FIRST POSITION) that steps on the field to play anything else.

They are indeed SPECIALIST

frank uible

Sammy Baugh, Bob Waterfield, Lou Groza, George Blanda.... for starters.

Ignore him PolarCat.  He can't even read a box score because if he could he'd know that Lebowitz was sacked 3 times by Colby and once by Bowdoin.  I doubt either of these two have even seen Middlebury play this season because if they had they'd have pointed out (with glee) that one weakness needing to be dealt with, when preparing to play a team as good as Amherst, is stupid penalties.  Then there's the age old wisdom that if you aren't a blue chipper you aren't a player.  Hmm.  So that's always been my problem.  Thanks for the heads up.  Any chance PC, that you were asking in that lame way of yours if he knew what it means to be a teammate?

westcoastDad

You're right Vandy74....the games are usually all telecast at 1pm.  I only watch 1 game.  Nice to hear the Panthers gave up a few sacks.  It's going to take more than that to slow him based on his 10 TDs

As for the Lou Groza,  Blanda etc.... the game has changed a bit since those guys played with leather helmets and no face masks  (forgive me George) lol.

NESCAC is a different face than today's D1 but it's not even close to the sport from the 40s and 50s.

Let's stay in the moment.  Today's kickers and punters are usually specialists.

frank uible

There is something majestic about one individual playing the roles of both left offensive tackle and also placekicker, which transcends the pettiness  of specialty.
