While I generally agree that we shouldn't be diving into politics here, no one seemed to have a problem when people took a NESCAC football blog and steered it into lengthy discussions about kneeling for the national anthem.  But I guess only certain political viewpoints are welcome here ... and yeah, God forbid WCD distract from our recent enlightening conversations about the size of posters' genitalia with one TINY quip related to politics.
Standing for the National Anthem is manners.  Presidential critiques are politics.

maineman, I hope you are joking, rather than just oblivious.

OK, maineman, then oblivious.  You REALLY think there is nothing "political" about the ongoing dispute over kneeling for the National Anthem by (largely) minority athletes protesting the utter and total indifference in America to innocent black civilians being routinely gunned down, then in response to that act of political protest, being called "sons of bitches" by the barely-human sociopath currently occupying the White House, who then spends succeeding weeks repeatedly calling for them to lose their livelihoods because of an act of political expression, all while galvanizing his bloodthirsty base against the NFL as a cover to distract from his own many daily failings, including the mysterious deaths of four service-men about whom he could clearly care less?  Or when a man who is likely (and incredibly) about to become a United States Senator is advocating for putting athletes in jail for exercising their First Amendment rights?  Nothing could possibly be MORE political.

Listen, I understand people can disagree about the underlying issue (I for one think it's utterly ridiculous for largely the same people who weren't bothered in the slightest when Tamir Rice or plenty others like him were shot for no good reason to get SO up in arms about a quiet, silent form of protest that inflicts no tangible harm of any kind on anyone, but yeah, I get that there is a different viewpoint among people whose children are unlikely to ever be shot on account of their skin color) ... but there is simply no credible argument that this hasn't become one of the single most "political" issues of this year, and it's frankly amazingly, almost impossibly, obtuse to characterize it as anything but that.

See attached... Or at least used to be there.

Next to the Ferris Athletic Center..... The wall that is parallel to Broad St right by the Broad/Ferris entrance to the Athletic Center parking lot.

That's kind of a movable feast.  It all depends how many visiting teams are playing in Hartford that weekend.  It's often (though not always) down by the baseball diamond, in the lot between the buildings marked 40 and 44 on this map: http://commons.trincoll.edu/chemistry/files/2011/08/maps_chem.jpg

Hartford State Mother -  The need to qualify any one of these institutions,  and saying one being smarter then another,  including your apparent need to qualify Trinity,  is a lame duck.     The gift of football,  is supposedly the great life lessons that it teaches,  none of which includes scoring with little time on the clock and up that much.   So,  cool,  JD is a good x and o coach,  with a winning  program,  and the kids will learn whatever life lessons he teaches,  which includes the good, bad, and ugly.  This was clearly a poor decision,  and the gift of humility by telling his players that  his emotions got the best of him.  This would have been a great lesson.   Maybe he is an alum of Trinity,  and thus,  wasn't taught these morals from his coach,  sounds cyclical.

Respect?

Well, that escalated quickly!   It is proper decorum, manners if you will, to rise and doff your cap at the playing of the National Anthem.  I wasn't aware of innocent black civilians being routinely gunned down by law enforcement as a fact on record.  Perhaps you meant in Chicago neighborhoods?  Glad my children face no gunshot risk because of their skin color...hope the overseas enemy their facing daily got that memo too!  I think you might want to temper your vitriol, and tone down the hyperbole.

I joined this board a little over a year ago when my son was a freshman. Not knowing much about NESCAC football nor the traditions, I hoped to get some insight as to what makes this league so special and talk football with other like minded people.

Boy has this board spiraled into the toilet this year!
The constant bitching and denigrating by some of you has made this board an utter waste of time.

While many of you make believe that you are part of something special because you are either an alum or a parent, the attacks and negative commentary are incongruent with NESCAC values. Time to look in the mirror.

I can't believe with less than 2 days until the 6th game of he season this board is filled with politics and personal parts. I bet it makes some of you yearn for the good ol' days when I was coach bashing. lol. Sorry, not happening. I've got my eye on Saturday hoping Colby will put up enough points to beat Hamilton. My guess is we'll need at least 3 TDs to pull it off. If we're 0-6 this time Sunday, and the offense keeps failing, all bets are off. But until then, Go Mules!!!

Colby Football-
Good post- agree completely with you and others who said let's get back to Football.

PolarCat

Amazing that Pat Coleman could be all over this board when it came to posted stats, but totally invisible as it runs off the rails into another political morass.

I completely agree: let's get back to football.

Anyone see any upsets on the horizon this Saturday?  We're still likely to have one blow-out (Polar Bears in the Coop), but a bunch of competitive games, for a refreshing change.  Who's got the Jumbos and who's got the Ephs?  Do the Cards have what it takes to beat the FLJ's at home?  Will Colby cap off it's loooooooooooong bus ride by finally throwing up a W?

Closer to home, which Bobcats team will show up Saturday?  The one that was leading the Cards at halftime last week, or the one that crumbled like wet papier mache in the second half?  (To be fair to the boys, it's more a question of which OC will show up this week).  Are the Panthers vulnerable after their first loss, or will they make a statement?  (In the dysfunctional world of Bates Football, the Panthers' grandstands could be fuller than the Bobcats', since the prior AD arranged for this home game to be played over Bates' fall break.  Number 516 in the list of Things That Drive Bobcats Fans Crazy).

God, 413local, are you really gonna be the kind of a--hole who could care less about anyone getting hurt in Chicago except when you can wield it as a totally off-point and totally immaterial comment in every single discussion about violence or gun control?  Apparently so.  You guys are just, simply, the worst.  If the issue of black people getting disproprotionately targeted by law enforcement is so mysterious to you, I recommend that you talk to an actual black person -- like, say, Senator Tim Scott, who is conservative as it gets and shared his OWN personal experiences with this.  In all events, that is what the National Anthem protest is actually about, whether you like it or not.

Regardng the flag stuff, there were pages and pages of discussion of this topic here awhile back.  Interestingly, PolarCat, who NOW wants to talk about football, was one of the primary people leading this conversation.  I did not get involved, and in fact, asked when this topic first came up that we keep politics off the board, knowing that it would get completely off the rails (of course).  And I was chastized for that by, guess who, PolarCat!  99.9 percent of my posts on D3boards have been entirely about the topic at hand.  But I'm not gonna stand by when people jump all over a dude for a one-sentence joking post that mentions Trump, while the rest of y'all are all too happy to bash NESCAC players and students as snowflakes in other contexts and engage in endless (and mostly one-sided) debates about the National Anthem.  Nor will I sit silently when someone claims that this topic is not "political," which is just patently and obviously false.

That being said, I am HAPPY to return to football, as I am almost always focused on that here, and which is what I suggested we do the first time this topic arose on these boards.
