No reason to be confused "Oh Great One", keeper of all that is D3 sports...

Our "editorial board" is comprised of correspondents from multiple NESCAC schools, yes, even including Hartford State. All posts are reviewed and approved by our group prior to publishing. Our posts may not always be popular, but we speak the truth and always stand by our sources. And for the record, NO ONE picks NESCAC football game winners better than we do. That's a fact.

Thank you for all you do on behalf of D3 sports.

WELL PLAYED NESCACMAN.

It is Hump Day and "important posts/comments " dealing with Nescac football awaits.
First, the post wrt CAC following the rational of the Ivies for co-champs is interesting.  But to help with fund raising?  The Ivies are the richest of the American colleges.  What is this the Big Ten?....where one sees 100,000 plus crowds that pay big bucks for seats, parking, etc.  Is this the SEC where additional  big bucks are spent to get rooms in Town for football games?  WSJ had a story this week on Texas A& M building a lux Hotel near the stadium where big donors will reserve rooms...but must pay upwards of 100k for the rights.  Now that is serious football fund raising!
Next, according to an Amherst post, if fans and alums cannot go to dozens of gatherings around the World and the USA...at least 4 in Florida..to watch tHe NESN broadcast of the game, it will be shown again at 6 Pm on the Amherst website.
Last, if Amherst overcomes Williams' homefield advantage, and wins this Sat......thus preventing Williams' players from taking the ""walk"...to the barber shop up the street...l will support an effort to convince the AD at Amherst to allow the Amherst team to get their  deserved Title Rings.
Well, enough bravdo.  Oh yes, with respect to Trinity 8 -0, I will Be likewise cheering for Wes.
Last, there is a Wes website photo showing the Patriots HC talking to the Wes players before the Williams game this past weekend.

Co-champs is stupid,  going undefeated is really what any one of these higher level programs want to attain,  as they should.    A three way tie at 7-2 is a nice season,  and the rings will make some of the kids feel special.   Any real dude on a team,  or coach,  wants 9-0,  end of story.

PolarCat

Co-champion is unsatisfying.  Even more so when there is a post-season.

In 2013, PolarKitten's soccer team made it to the finals of the NEPSAC (New England Private School Athletic Conference) Championship.  They were tied 0-0 at the end of regulation, 0-0 at the end of OT, and 0-0 at the end of 2OT.  In a situation like this, soccer championships are normally decided by PK's.  However, the story goes that some years earlier, a Connecticut player committed suicide after her team lost the title in PK's.  (I'm not sure if she was a GK who failed to block the winning PK, or a field player who shot wide or over the net).

Both the A and B divisions of NEPSAC had the same scenario and declared co-champions that year.  While co-champs is arguably more satisfying than finishing second, I think every girl on all four teams would have preferred to settle the matter with PK's, a "golden goal" or the like.

Not sure about AIC but Springfield is not the program it was in the 70s or early 80s.
The top NESCAC teams would handle Springfield today but that was not always the case in the 70s.

There is no evidence available to support this statement, which means it's completely an opinion. dlip disagrees with that opinion wholeheartedly, at least regarding this season.

IVY leagues like multiple champions because it helps them raise more money?  Smh.

Head to Head should Matter

Gotta be a hollow feeling to say we are co-champs with a team that beat us.

Sounds like the old "participation" trophy mantra imho.

hamgrand

I agree 100% that head to head matters - but does that mean Midd would be champs if Amherst beats Williams and ends at 8 - 1???  Obviously joking!

With regard to 9 - 0, of course its the goal that all the top teams strive for ... but the goal also changes based on circumstances and perspective.

Middlebury has to focus entirely on beating Tufts and getting to 7 - 2.  But if they can achieve that, then I am sure they would rather be 7-2 and tied for first, than 7-2 and either tied for second or third.

The team has to take care of its own business, but I'm sure most Midd fans are cheering for Williams and Wesleyan wins!

Lol, Midds have 2 losses ......so no!  They need help.  We talkin about "tie" breakers.  :)

2017 NESCAC Weekly Power Rankings-Week #8

Some thoughts on week 8....

1.   Let's start with ...Colby, Colby Colby (again)...they are on the cusp of an 0-9 season...did you know that Colby has won more NESCAC games historically than they have lost (170-160), they have an all-time football winning record and they have as many NESCAC championships in football as Wesleyan and 1 more than Tufts (who has never won one)...
2.   Rumor has it that the loser of the Colby/Bowdoin game will be relegated to "Division 4"...
3.   Amhurst looked good in their big win against Hartford State last week....Bants better play better this Saturday or they will be in for a rude awakening against a strong Wes team playing better and better every week...
4.   The Ephs looked very mortal and very young in losing to Wes on Saturday...TTUN had 6 offensive first downs and 127 yards of total offense while allowing Wes to gain 455 yards...the score could have been much worse than 35-0 final...Wes has the ball on the Eph 2, failed to convert on 3 straight pass attempts and missed a chip shot FG...Williams only crossed the 50 twice (and 1of those was on the last drive of the game when Wes was playing their 4th string)...Wes finally played a full 60 minute game...having some of their players back made a huge difference...we still expect the TTUN to play a spoiler role this Saturday at home with a chance to disrupt the Lord Mammoths' season...
5.   Speaking of the Ephs, former HCOF Kelton is 0-10 at Shorter with 130 points for and 430 points against...
6.   Wes WR Breuler and QB Piccirillo are on the cusp of reaching some rarified air in NESCAC football annals...Breuler is on the cusp of breaking the all-time records for catches and receiving yards in a season while Piccirillo has a chance to break the all-time total offense record and will end up having one of the all-time great years in terms of passing yards and passing TDs...both are OPOTY candidates...
7.   If Lebo doesn't play for the Pants against Tufts, they are going to have a tough time...beating HAM with your back-up is one thing....beating the Jumbo's is something else...
8.   For defensive POTY, looks like a 2-man race between Wes LB Brandon Morris and Amhurst Buck Andrew Yamin...
9.   We went 3-2 last week and stand at 33-7 for the season....
10.   We feel like Bates would be better if they recruit a QB that could throw the ball a little and move Costa to TB...
11.   The C-B-B is 2-22 on the year...
12.   Word on the street is that former Holy Cross coach and Ivy defensive player of the year (when he played at Penn), Tom Gilmore, is a leading candidate for the HCOF spot at Colby... Mules New AD, who has an Ivy League background, is said to like Gilmore's intensity and what he could bring to Waterville...
13.   The upcoming week 9 is the hardest week of the season to pick winners....
14.   Back in 2013 when we first organized our network of NESCAC reporters, our editorial board debated on how to refer to a supposed institution of higher learning located on the south side of Hartford, CT....After much debate, it came down to two choices...We elected to call said institution "Hartford State College" over "Hartford State Penitentiary" because we heard a rumor that said institution actually occasionally graduates students with some sort of degree and to the best of our knowledge, they have no cells or bars over the windows (however, there is a very high fence surrounding the institution, which may or may not be electrified)....We've also heard the food at said institution may also be "prison-like"....
15.   A story with regard to Hartford State...This was mentioned earlier in the year...Please keep in mind that we have connections deep inside some of the NESCAC Football Programs (maybe even 'State itself....hmmmm...food for thought)...We are careful how we use those connections and what we divulge to the masses but sometimes there is a story or tidbit (like us breaking the news of the 9 game schedule, the firing of HCOF Kelton, the NESCAC POTY's and the All-League Selections before anyone else, etc.) that is too juicy to hold back...The anecdote: one of the NESCAC Programs had 14 of HS's top recruits on their recruiting board...At least 1/2 of them wanted to go to the "other" NESCAC school, not HS...Not one single one of those recruits got into the other school...All 14 got into and attend HS today...
16.    Trin8-0 reminds us of Neidermeyer and his chummy Omega's in "Animal House" or the baseball bat wielding, baseball uniformed gang called "The Baseball Furies" in "The Warriors" movie or the Alpha Beta fraternity in "The Revenge of the Nerds"....Tough to root for those guys... can't you just picture Trin8-0 riding around on his horse in full ROTC dress uniform, tormenting poor Colbyfootball, ("Flounder") while NESCACMAN ("Boon") hits golf balls at Trin8-0 riding his horse....we can definitely see that....And Trin8-0, you could not have pegged us more wrong than you did...Hopefully, you're not an FBI profiler, because you would be very bad at it....
17.   Lastly, we will never apologize for anything we post on this Board..As we have said many, many times, people take themselves way too seriously, need to lighten up and recognize satire and humor for what it is...You may not personally find something funny or humorous or witty but that doesn't mean that someone else doesn't....

1. Amhurst (7-1; LW-2): Chance to win the NESCAC outright...not the best team they have ever had, but good enough in what feels like a slightly down year for the league.
This week: at Williams

2. Hartford State (7-1; Last Week-1): Will try to salvage something with a win in the Coop on Saturday in the "Battle of the Birds"...Wes will try to "poop in the coop"...
This week: Wesleyan in Hartford

3. (tie) Middlebury (6-2; LW-3): Is Lebo's career over??? Will need him back on Saturday to have a shot to beat Tufts...
This week: at Tufts

3. (tie) Wesleyan (6-2; LW-4): Finally played the way we expected all year...could give Hartford State a lot of problems if they play that way Saturday...
This week: at Hartford State

5. Tufts (5-3; LW-5): Big game against Mid...they win and they can consider the season a success...lose....well...
This week: Middlebury in Medford

6. Williams (5-3; LW-6): Playing with house money....whatever they do at home on Saturday against the Lord Mammoths, this has been a successful, rebound year...Coach Raymond gets our vote for NESCAC Coach of the Year...
This week: Amhurst in Williamstown

7. Hamilton (2-6; LW 7): We feel like this Team has regressed the last 3 weeks...will need to play a lot better to beat the resurgent Bobcats and their QB Costa...
This week: University of Bates (Lewiston Campus) in Clinton

8. University of Bates (Lewiston Campus) (2-6; LW-8): Congrats to Bates on winning the 2017 version of the C-B-B midget wrestling championship... riding a 2 game win streak, albeit against winless competition...
This week: at Hamilton

9. Colby (0-8; LW-9): Will try to head off a winless season this week at Bowdoin....
This week: at Bowdoin

10. Bowdoin (0-8; LW-10): Really close between them and Colby for worst team in the league...well find out who is worst this Saturday...
This week: Colby in Brunswick
