The Bates' aministration has used outside resources before. Athletics never was and never will be a priority to the school. As long as the president remains they will be a joke. She believes in participation, not winning.

Despite being the off-season there continues to be considerable positive buzz on Mayflower Hill and the Mule alumni community regarding the new direction for the football program.  Apparently yesterday was the first official day on the job for the new coach.

You don't have to look very far back on this message board to find similar posts about the buzz coming from Bowdoin alums regarding their new coach and the new direction of their team....it all comes down to what the administration is going to do to support the program.

Like every new hire, this new head guy will bring some new energy and I'm sure the success hungry alums are looking for anything to bring optimism to the program, but be cautioned......we've heard this before from the great state of Maine. Let's all just wish for the best (Having more teams in the running will be great for the league) but curb our expectations a bit.

An article well worth reading on former Jumbo standout Sean Harrington chock-full of fun tidbits from NESCAC players and coaches about his time at Tufts and his career now working for the Patriots. A very fun read that is so NESCAC in every way.

Press coverage of the Cosgrove hiring at Colby.  Can sense renewed excitement and optimism.

Very exciting times at Colby. I can't wait for next season.

bsc73-

Incorrect, you are confusing the present administration with the old president. This is the first and only initiative of this magnitude involving Athletics at Bates.
Not sure what interaction you have had with her but she wants to win and sees very clearly the connection between winning Athletics and growing the endowment which is a primary focus for this administration. While she is not willing to sell out academic standards to the extent of other NESCAC schools she's totally committed to upgrading Athletics at Bates.
Next time you speak with her just ask her.

She has you snowballed. There are athletes in every sport that have been denied at Bates and end up at Amherst , williams etc. Try talking to any coach and see what they have to say. I think you'd be surprised. I've said it before and I'll say it again, they will never be successful as long as she's there.

You are babbling now- there are not a significant number of athletes who are denied at Bates and "end up" at Amherst or Williams. You've got to be kidding.

I talk to a number of coaches and am fully aware of the shortcomings in Bates athletics that the President is openly acknowledging and engaging to correct. Despite your assertions, she's has taken some time to get a handle on the situation and is aware of the shortcomings. The fix will not be accomplished overnight. With the hiring of the new AD 7 months ago they are formulating a plan to bring about changes. No one has taken this kind of approach at Bates in the last 25 years.

You say they will never improve and I am saying they will never be Trinity but they are going to get better. Time will tell.

By the way, what initiatives has she taken?

Go back and read my response to one of your posts a day or two ago.

Colby, how many 2018 wins will it take to keep you excited?

It's never been about the number of wins (though winning is nice). It's always been about the inability to compete, and doing nothing to change things up. I really don't want to rehash the past. It's done, and hopefully good times are ahead.

That said, my feeling is if Colby can win 2-3 games while rebuilding under the new coach, and not have the same tired predictable offense, that would be fine. And if they could scare a top team or two in losses, that would be icing on the cake.

What are your thoughts on this?

Sounds not unreasonable except for dictation of the offense part.

The offense is really a throw in. It goes to the enjoyment of watching the game. It's fun to watch scoring, even in a loss.

Been staying low on the boards lately....the cold weather, new "leaf" on letting coaches do their thing, etc., etc.
Got to reading this board out of season and.....
Did anybody watch the Title game between the SEC teams that went to OT?
Anyway, thought the HC of the Crimson Tide made a gutsy change of QB after halfTime.  The second half action was the QB duel of two FY QBs....plus lots of young players stepping up.  Reminded me of the Williams win over Amherst in OT this season.
Anyway, there is some positive karma for the CCB teams with new coaches  as they will field young talented teams to compete in the Nescac...imho.  New year...fresh starts in Maine!
