OK. That's just ridiculous.  Reggie Williams was a better pro player than Marinaro.  But Marinaro still holds NCAA and Ivy League all-time records.  He was one of the greatest Ivy players in history.  Please don't make that comparison of the two as college players. That's not worthy of you.

Interesting discussion going on here while the football season crawls to a start.  Some general comments about the past, Admissions, pro players, etc, etc.
First....the Dartmouth Indians turned coed in 76?  Wow, so that was why/when the Men from Dartmouth stopped crashing the couches of the Amherst frats.  Actually, Amherst went coed about the same time.
In the early 70's there were a number of Amherst football players that went to the pros.  Doug Swift'70, Jean Fugett'72 and Freddie Scott'74 are the best known.  Doug was the outside linebacker for the Miami Dolphin and starter for six seasons....was on the '72 and''73 Super Bowl teams.  Left to go to med school and became a MD.  Freddie from the state that Clinton was governor, was a walk on.  Went to a practice to watch his roommate practice and thought he could make the team.  Drafted in '74 in the 7th round, he spent 10 fruitful years with the Colts and Lions...Captain of the Lions.  Freddie's son decided to go D1 to Penn State, left early to go pro and never made it.  Jean played for Dallas and the Redskins over a 8 year period.  A lawyer and a businessman now.  A two sport player at Amherst, his kids went D1.  His son was a D1 player at the Un. of Cinn.  His son transferred to Amherst to play football with his cousin.  An honor student in D1, his father restricted his playing two sports at Amherst until he made honor grades.   Injuries shortened his playing time at Amherst.  Big tall kid...remembered chatting with him and his cousin at breakfast.   I have related these stories to illustrate that it is most difficult to predict where/why kids go to college to follow their dreams.  Also to change the "tone" a bit on this board.
Maybe tomorrow will relate a story how a D1 football recruit got to play QB at Amherst...actually have two recruiting stories.

hope it's understood that my "tone" on the Marinaro/Williams controversy was intended to be humorous.

The reference to Hill Street Blues was the clue, Hamiltonian!

Hamiltonian

good.  thanks.  it occurred to me that many of you folks posting here may never have even heard of it!  definitely dating myself.

as I also will by recalling having seen, in person, at the Yale Bowl, Columbia's old Baker Field, and the great Schoellkopf Stadium in Ithaca: not only Mr. Marinaro but future NFL players Marty Domres (Columbia), and Calvin Hill, Dick Jauron, Gary Fencik, and Rich Diana (all from Yale).

So..... How's the football in the NESCAC? Anyone have any predictions, upsets, or breakout players to discuss? Just saying.

Hamiltonian

OK.

1. Hamilton
2. Trinity
3. Amherst
4. Williams
5. Wesleyan
6. Tufts
7. Colby
8. Bates
9. Bowdoin

Jalen Hurts, fed up with his treatment by Nick Saban, transfers to Hamilton.  Will take this year and next off and take over when Gray graduates.  Trinity coaches cry foul.

Hamiltonian:  Did Middlebury give up football in the off season?!

Hamiltonian

oops.  forgot to mention Middlebury, which leaves NESCAC, goes D1, and joins the Ivy League.

Hamiltonian

leaving Hamilton in sole possession of the rocking chair

Now this is going to hurt my Panther poster friends.....Midd will not be accepted by the Ivy League :)...too small.
Hamiltonian...my changing the tone comment was the general comments wrt admissions topic.
Today's WSJ has a big "insert section" on College rankings!  Seems for the first time, there is a ranking of Liberal Arts Colleges....the rankings with a number of Nescac schools should surprise some posters on this board.

Hamiltonian

not so terribly different from USNEWS rankings, is it?  only thing I notice is that Tufts is very badly treated:  moved to universities and placed 57th?  that doesn't seem right.

I'd be surprised if many guys who were healthy scratches for Williams last year make much of an impact this year -- the team relied so heavily on so many young dudes that there are hardly guys left who are "break out" candidates.  I think we will again see some frosh playing prominent roles, although nothing like last year when the team started frosh at QB, T, TB, WR (two), TE, LB (two) and Safety.  My wild (totally uninformed, so take it with a grain of salt) guess about a few frosh names to keep an eye on this year:

Stephen Kletscher - big DL from Minnesota, looks promising and plays a position of major need; at least one and probably more than one frosh will see major playing time up front on defense

Tyler Spiezio - TE from Minnesota, another big target for Maimaron with tremendous bloodlines (Dad played MLB) and another position that was very thin last year (only one true TE really played)

Andrew Schreibstein - P/K, has a big leg and Williams returns no punters, plus I could see him being a kick-off specialist as well

Desi O'Mahoney, LB - very strong career at a strong program, but Williams is fairly loaded with returning talent at LB

Eli Peters, OL - blocked for several years for Maimaron in H.S., another guy from a really strong program, and Williams will likely have at least 1-2 frosh OL in the two deep.
