I'm new here so forgive me if this is something that everyone already knows.

But the Bates field runs Southwest to Northeast.

At this time of year and a 1:00 game that means whoever is receiving a punt/kick on the Northeast side of the field is staring directly at the sun shining from between the goalposts.

I noticed the position of the shadows during punts and at least 2 punts and a kick were fumbled by Amherst from that end of the field. It happened to Bates once as well.

Not making excuses, players have to play the sun. Baseball players deal with it all the time. But it does make for a difficult play early in the season.

NBC93-

You just picked up on something that an amazing number of visiting coaches and "experts" have missed forever.

Bates is a sun field, and if you don't know what goal to defend you are making a mistake.......talk about the advantages of winning the toss and deferring!!!

Regarding your input on the fumbled punts on Saturday I can assure you that the sun was not and has not been a factor historically until later in the day---- it's typically a factor on passing plays to the far end later in the year and some teams don't figure that out.

When they renovated venerable Garcelon Field there was a move  to shift the field 90 degrees but the book toting Trustees opposed it.....they needed new beakers and Bunsen burners for the science lab.

The advantage to Garcelon Field is there is no cold side....both sides sunny and warm!!!

NBC93

Lumbercat,
I'm not sure about the sun not being a factor this time of year. I will grant you that it shouldn't interfere with receiving a pass which is a lower trajectory, but I would have to assume that a high punt or kick is going to cross in front of that sun at some point on the way up and down before it gets to the return man. That's my only explanation for 4 instances on the NE end where normally reliable returners looked like lost children at the supermarket.

lumbercat

NBC93-
Respectfully- nope. It will interfere on a pass late in the day to the far end zone when the sun is low for a brief time before if it is blocked by the building there when that whole end of the field goes into shade.
Ive seen muffs but never seen a returner lose one in the sun. Maybe a little bit of an angle on the compass points.....but only a factor on a late day possession to that end zone.

NBC93

Lumbercat,
I will respectfully yet grudgingly defer to someone who has been around Garcelon field and this league more than myself.

lumbercat

The sun is lower in the fall.....in July you might be right.

A receiver might lose a lower trajectory throw now and then but its never been an issue beyond the late day sun in the far end zone. It's  actually  an issue for the QB throwing into the sun....but its brief because the sun falls behind the commons building late in the day,.

Nescacman

Is it just us or did we hear other posters snoring after the debate on whether the sun interferes with catching kicks on Garcelon Field....only on the NESCAC Board...Al Davis, where are you when we need you?!? Chief O'Hara, please shine the bat spotlight Al Davis' way...

Nescacman,
You're right. I should just regurgitate game stats evergone can already get from quick Google search and the box scores and pass that off as in-depth analysis. My bad.

Go back and read our 389 posts over the last 5 years and then MAYBE you can criticize us...Seems like everyone else on the Board appreciates the hard work and thoughtfullness we put into our rankings and picks, year after year, week after week...sounds to me like typical Lord Mammoth parent crying...we've seen your kind before....your kids used to attend TTUN...go home and smother someone with poisonous blankets...haha

Nescacman,
I didn't start this. You did. I was trying to introduce some context into the 6 fumbles in the box score. I felt it was an interesting angle that sheds light on the fact that only one fumble was forced by Bates.
I am an Amherst parent of a FY and I am not from the northeast. We are from Michigan and this is all new to me as I have stated previously. Sorry to offend, but you made it seem like friendly jabbing and ad hominem lite was appropriate.

Oh great one...as you know, some boarders don't always like hearing the truth...

Well, just to make it clear, the statement that "everyone else appreciates the hard work" has no real basis in ... well, anything in terms of evidence. :)

Got it....bottom line is Amhurst didn't play particularly well against a team that is destined for the second division...yes UBates has a pretty good D but they have a FY, first time head coach and are running an offense that might not be best suited for their personnel...I am sure you saw the game...the Lord Mammoths were lucky to escape with a win...based on what we saw, they will go as far as their defense takes them...if they play the same way they did Saturday against the upper tier of the league, they will go 4-5...we had them at 8-1 and still standby our prediction but they will need to play a lot better to approach that sort of record...

We'll save our "gold stars" going forward...at least we didn't  threaten to "knock anyone's teeth in"  :D
