Trin9-0

I'll echo the congratulations to Middlebury on a historic season. Between the Panthers becoming the first ever 9-0 NESCAC team, Wes equaling their all-time record for wins in a year, Hamilton finishing with the same record as Amherst, and the prohibitive preseason favorite, Trinity, finishing with four losses, it really goes to show that us posters don't know as much as we think we do!

Estevez was as advertised for the Cards doing a little bit of everything. Thaw was tremendous, and sophomore WR Matt Simco killed Trinity as well with 7 catches for 133 yards. He seemed to be open on every play. The game never really felt close until the very end. Wesleyan scored on their opening possession and led 21-0 until late into the third quarter. In the second half I actually checked to find out when the last time Trinity was shutout at home as it looked like that's where the game was going (by the way it was a 28-0 loss to Williams in 1977). I thought Devanney made the right call to pull Lambert at halftime and Vazzano nearly lead an epic comeback. In the end it wasn't enough and DiCenzo got his first win over Trinity and Wesleyan secured their first win in Hartford since before probably every current Cardinal was born.

This is certainly one of the most disappointing seasons in the past several decades for Trin. It's just the fourth time Trinity has had four or more losses since 1980. Coming off of three consecutive NESCAC championships combined with the high preseason expectations make it all the more upsetting. I wasn't able to get an answer as to why and exactly when sophomore RB Spencer Longwood left the football team and, I believe, the College. He last played in week 2 and is not listed on the team roster.

The cupboard is far from bare in Hartford though and I expect the Bants to return to form sooner rather than later. Even Nescacman is a believer in the Bants as they miraculously jumped two spots in his ranking. ;) With the middle of the pack NESCAC teams on the rise it should make for a very competitive 2020 season... well except for the CBB.

I'm sure that most of you have seen this, but this link popped up when I was reading the post on the Howard coach. Interesting approach, which I think will happen more and more across the country.

Middlebury, Vermont, has a football culture separate from the college that goes back a hundred years.  The guy who spearheaded this played his high school and college ball in Midd.
People have been aware of the possible/likely demise of the sport for a long time.  The safety program for kids is outstanding and necessary, but the love shown to the sport through the decades is unmistakable.  Crowds come hours early to high school games and celebrate in the parking lot.  The team's following is often 5x that of the home team for away games.
It would be very difficult to replicate this in a place that lacked the history, tradition and deep appreciation for high school football.

MidDay

Helluva fun season to be a Panther parent.  It felt like a special season from the first heart-stopping win against Williams and never let up.  The whole season was a great team effort.  They're well stocked to stay competitive for the foreseeable future.

Things got crazy at the end of the year and I never got the chance to buy Bandy and MidHoops drinks at Dos Bro's, but hope to catch up with you next year!

Pretty shocking that Hartford State ended 5-4 given their academic standards for football... I have heard from many current players recruited to Trinity and former Trinity football/basketball alums that coaches would not even ask to see their transcripts prior to verbally offering spots on the team... It has been discussed on this board in years past that Trinity should not compete in the NESCAC given that 90% of their players could not even be C bands on any other NESCAC roster... and yet this year proved that maybe they do belong (and probably should have ended with the same record as Hamilton). Trinity fans can continue to be "proud" of beating up on schools that actually demand elite level academics from their football team, but maybe the Hartford State Admissions Office stepped up their game this year. Trin8-0, you can continue to be "happy" for Wesleyan hitting their All-time win record, and "happy" for Williams being back as league title contenders, as well as for the "resurgence" of Hamilton — but funny you don't mention that this was Trinity's first 4 loss season since 2001. The Whalen mafia and DiCenzo mafia have not had 4 losses in a season since their first recruiting class became sophomores (they went 3-5 in 2011 during that class' freshman year). It's great to live in a world where DICE will not touch 4 losses ever again, and Hartford State will be at risk for 4 losses every year from now on with the new balance of the NESCAC— could see them losing against Wes, Williams, Midd, Amherst, and Tufts in many of the years ahead... you should change your name to Trin4-5.

While the high school culture developed on it own Cuz, there is no better time to mention how interwoven it has become with the program on the hill.  As you know,"the guy who spearheaded this," along with two other high school friends of ours, played on that 1972 undefeated Panther eleven.  One was the QB.  As the HC at Middlebury Union High School Brakeley went on to coach three of the four current MC assistants, including his son who mentors the defensive line.  The three MUHS alums have thirty years of football coaching experience at the college.

I am concerned about the loss of receivers.  Hopefully there will be reliable options to throw the ball to with the graduation of Cosolito, Rye and Bochman.

Wow, it's a little disappointing that Wesleyan can have such a great season and yet their posters are still obsessed with Trinity. I guess that happens when you only have one measly tri-championship to tout over the past twenty years, while Trinity has NINE NESCAC titles. Your claims about offing spots without looking at transcripts is absurd along with the rest of your ramblings.

Umm... Wes finished with four losses LAST SEASON. It's also worth noting that the while Cards finished 5-3 in 2015 they didn't play Tufts who finished 6-2. I'd caution your boasts that Wesleyan will never again see four losses following a season where FIVE of their wins were one score games, and they're just one year removed from a four loss finish.

While I did congratulate Middlebury on their championship I didn't say I was happy for Williams, Wesleyan, or Hamilton. I did however mentioned that Trinity had four losses twice in my post:

It's just the fourth time Trinity has had four or more losses since 1980.

Promise...last post here this season :)
Read the discussion on keeping kids playing football in Vt.   Remember something about the topic wrt to the Empire State from my distant past.  Had a Frat brother who played football in HS.  He played in NY state...a small HS....on a team that used less than 11 players.  Keep thinking about a 6-player size starting lineup.  In any case, the big fellow, class of 64, switched to crew at Amherst.  Frat had six rowers, plus the cox, on the Amherst team.
This post is in part to confirm my fading memory wrt limited size football teams in the Empire State.  The Midd type of kids football is better in the 21th century.

It's a very deep position.  Livingston will have a great year next year and there are several excellent receivers who have just been waiting their turn.  It shouldn't be an are of concern.

By the way, it was great to have a good turnout of players from the undefeated '72 Panthers celebrating with the '19 Panthers.  They even brought their team picture to pose with.
