Very quiet offseason. No significant coaching moves this year. There should be a little more activity as official recruiting announcements are made after 5/1.

Seems quiet this year in terms of new NESCAC football parents finding the board. Always interesting to see new parents come aboard and hear their stories on school selection and their recruiting experiences as they begin to explore the NESCAC.

In terms of recruiting, Trinity doing their usual recruiting job which is well documented on the board and Colby is killing it too with Cosgrove and his staff landing several good ones.

I hear that Chris Kempton, an assistant at both Bates and Colby will be returning to Maine to coach at UNE.

Chris cut his teeth at Maine and Colby but really came into his own as DC at Bates. He did a great job with the Bates D but left the program when CoachHarriman was let go. UNE is lucky to get him, he will be at home back in Maine and nobody recruits like him and his former Bobcat colleague Skip Capone in the Pine Tree State. Look for the UNE defense to be very aggressive with a complex blitz package---- opponents in that conference better focus on ball security because every kid on that D will be totally focused on separating the football from the ball carrier.
Good luck Coach K.

Hello All - My son will be playing football at Bates this fall and I'm one of the new parents exploring what's happening in NESCAC football. The insight and opinions in this forum have been great to read, look forward to seeing how the next 4 years unfold...

Welcome aboard! My Son is a Freshman at Tufts.

We should get a parent roll call

D3 Sports is reporting that Midd and Tufts have cancelled all spring Sports due to COVID-19.  The Pantherettes are defending National Champs in WLAX and off to a 3-0 start but apparently are forfeiting the rest of their season.

The Tufts website made it sound like this was a unanimous decision by the NESCAC presidents to cancel spring sports, but so far only Tufts and Midd seem to be following through.

Vandy et. al. can you shed any light on this?

The email from the Midd Administration:

Spring Athletic Events and Practices: Effective 10 p.m. tonight, we are suspending all spring athletic activities, including practices and home and away games, until further notice.

No College-Sponsored Travel: Effective immediately, there will be no college-sponsored travel of any kind, including trips by athletic teams and clubs; faculty and staff in-person participation in conferences; and other engagements.

No Visitors: Effective immediately, no visitors, including prospective students, alumni, speakers, job applicants, performing artists, or members of the larger community will be permitted on campus. To the extent possible, visits and meetings will need to be conducted remotely.

That last one is a bit of a challenge.  Let's say you have a kid at Midd with no car, and you need to fetch them so they can spend the rest of the academic year on the sofa in your basement.  Yet you are not allowed to set foot on campus to retrieve Junior or Missy and all their accoutrement.

I went over and saw the 2nd quarter of the Tufts/Ithaca lacrosse game.  First off this was one of the worst beatings I have ever seen a lacrosse team take.  Tufts had 100 ****ing shots in the game and won 17/18 faceoffs in the first half.   I have no idea why Ithaca even schedules Tufts because in the last few years I don't think Ithaca has won a faceoff when it matters.  The poor Ithaca goalies are punished every time they play.

Anyway, I didn't feel like talking to anyone but saw an Ithaca tweet after the game that said this was probably Tufts last game for the season.  Just seems kind of drastic imo.  I get the logistics of a college being able to service students online just as easy as in person for 2 months, but I think they could have waited a few days/weeks to make a decision on athletics.

Posted on the MBB board wrt Today's WSJ articles on how schools around the country...Nescac ones too...are reacting to the corona flu.  The upcoming Olympics may also be impacted.  Sorry but not able to make the connection to the articles in the WSJ.

Its kind of ridiculous, my son has to be out Tufts by Friday. Columbia, Harvard & Princeton cancelled the rest of the year. Yale has a novel idea, suspend until April 6th and see what happens. After 4yrs of football, I wanted my other son to enjoy the last few months of school. I just hope graduation isn't affected

Back again.  Responding to PolarCat wrt Nescac info.
On the Amherst website, there is an update wrt the Spring sports.  Seems there is a possibility that Spring sports may Not be shut down completely.  Announcement from the Athletic Dept....sure with prez  approval...that the status of sports will be evaluated in the near future.

Polarkitten just called to report that the entire NESCAC has cancelled ALL Spring Sports.

Much as I hated those tuition bills when my twins were at Bates and Bowdoin, at least they were out of the house.  I can't imagine spending $70,000 for a University of Phoenix style online education, with my kid playing PlayStation in my basement.

When historians look back at this, I bet the numbers will show there were 10 times as many student deaths from alcohol, car crashes, fights (like that Babson MLAX kid who got killed in a fist fight with a Marine last year), falls off collapsing decks, and suicides than there were from COVID 19.

Insanity.

FWIW: Students generally seem to be immune to the effects, but they can still carry the disease and spread it to older people on college campuses.

Folks, it's not about your kid, or even how many college kids will die, in general.  It's about required nationwide sacrifices (and frankly, the ones you are moaning about, while significant, are nothing compared to the sacrifices those on the margins of our society will surely be forced to make) in order to arrest a pandemic before it reaches critical mass and totally overwhelms our medical system within about a month.  Just take five minutes to read about what is happening to Italy RIGHT NOW.  The United States will looks like that, most likely, absent dramatic, widespread, collective action.  And if we do, it will be an absolute disaster.

Look at the death rates for folks over 70 or so who catch this disease, they are truly frightening.  I realize those people aren't "your kids" but I promise that someone deeply cares about them.

Now, it's of course possible that some of these measures may have gone to far.  But I'd much rather be wrong in the direction of caution than wrong in the direction of insufficient action.
