BTW, great opening day for HS football in the Garden State yesterday! Going to be an epic year as we move to overall state champs by group in 2022 (like PA, TEX, etc.).

lumbercat

Bowdoin and Bates will each have 6 QBs in camp. Equipment managers at both schools have been advised to keep numbers available for Slot Receiver, Wide Receiver and Defensive Backs.

Costa is the Bates guy.

At Bowdoin looks like soph NJ kid Hale might be the favorite but not sure which way the Hammer is leaning.

The Mole

Saw on Twitter that Cornell (the Ivy school not the D3 in Iowa) has FIFTY ONE seniors on the roster for this season. 31 seniors and 20 Fifth year. I was shocked to see that, maybe I should not have been surprised?  Underscores the unpredictability of 2021. Should make it exciting to watch at all levels.

If that is the case with one (?) state champion, then it will be one of 4 teams...Don Bosco Prep, Bergen Catholic, St Joes (montvale) or St. Peters Prep. After these 4 teams there is a considerable drop off

To be clear, one state per champ per group (rather than by section as it was previously done)....group's are based on size of school...

The school's are also separated based on whether they are public or non-public...

So for example, Wayne Hills could be the overall Group 4 "public" champ, while the parochial's would be playing in their respective "non-public" group based on size....btw, you forgot Seton Hall Prep who has arguably been the best team in NJ recently ...

As someone with extensive knowledge of the HS Football (and hoops) landscape in PA, especially Southeastern PA with powers like St. Joe Prep and Archbishop Wood......PA might be just a couple of years away from moving to the CURRENT NJ model of two state champions, public and private.

It is a farce, disgusting and an absolute disgrace to call schools like St. Joe Prep and Wood legit state champions as they recruit their asses off in multiple adjoining states................and the public schools only have the kids who live within their borders.

I give very little credit to the "recruiting schools", as the tactics a few of them use would make your stomach turn. It's like the frickin SEC, with no recruiting sanctions, around these parts. No thank you!!

To me, the legit champions are the champs of each classification (6 in PA by male enrollment) in the public leagues. The private "recruiting leagues", in PA at least, are cesspools of filth and corruption!!! We've had AA and AAA State Basketball "faux championships" with finals like 89 - 21 and 82 - 17, with the inner-city, Southeastern PA, private school wiping the floor with some tiny public school out in Western PA.

Ask The Mole his opinion on this matter..................he knows exactly the mess I speak about in Southeastern PA. It sucks and Harrisburg (state capital) and the spineless snowflakes will be facing a lawsuit before long!!

Hale is from the same High School as former Tufts QB McDonald

I looked up Seton Hall Prep and it seems like the stepped up in competition (playing the big 4), but was always second tier in NJ. We can go on about recruiting, My 2 sons played at DBP from '12 - '19 ('11 was national champs), there was no recruiting my boys and playing local public teams was not fun or competitive. My Ivy league son was a 3 year starter at tackle and did alot of travel across the country (Ca, Nv, Utah, Fl, S.C. Wash DC). He played against Nick Bosa (St. Thomas aquinas), Rashawn Gary (Paramus catholic) and others. It was run like a college program and I would always get there early to watch "team"....end of practice type scrimmage with live hitting (the good ole days). At 6'3" he was a bit "short", but his experience at DBP made a huge difference. They actually had to dial him back at practice his freshman year because he practiced with the intensity of H.S.....

my other son is really short at 6'2" (ugh) and that meant D3 (some crappy D2 teams, not all). I asked his coach why they were interested in him and he said he learned things in H.S. (hand placement, etc..) that they were teaching current freshman.

the moral of the story...recruit from the Big North. Smart, well coached kids that will make a difference in the NESCAC, especially if they don't have D1 measurables

The Mole

Totally agree jmc. PA should move to boundary and non-boundary classifications if they keep the championships (some BS law prevents them from acting I think). I am a traditionalist in the sense that rivalries, neighborhood games and Thanksgiving Day traditions matter more than chasing a state championship. I would love to see the high playoff system junked in favor of that, but I realize I may be in the minority. PA State playoffs came after my high school career. My son played in the Inter-Ac (oldest high school league in the country) where they have no playoffs and he is going to NESCAC with no football postseason, so I am accustomed to and very comfortable with that model.

Playing in December in high school feels a bit egregious IMHO. That being said, I would love to see the 'Cac participate in NCAA playoffs for football and picking up a 10th game OOC with either local or recruiting appeal. I know it may never happen, but it would add some more interest. I also would be fine if it stays as is.

Great topic.

Hawk, we have definitely met at some point as we have watched many a game in Ramsey, Oradell, and Montvale and recruited (some successfully) from those schools...we know (as I am sure you do) HCOF's Toal, Nunzio, Karcich, Teel, et al.....once in a while, we even catch a game in Wayne, Franklin Lakes, and the other school in Oradell (the home of Bill Parcells and current Wes standout David Estevez)...looking forward to an amazing season in both the NESCAC and NJ HS football....We think BC is the parochial team to beat and Ramapo is the public team to beat North of the NJ Mason/Dixon line (I-195)....

Dave in Mahwah....I'm sure I'd recognize you if I saw you. My son that played from '12 - '16 at DBP and caught the tail end of the Toal-era. I won't go into detail (unless you want), but his HS/College career was something else, travel, the nail-biting end of games(ie: the triple overtime at overpeck park against B.C. in '12 or the trip to mission Viejo his soph. yr, ,all 215lbs of him) to his last year at Yale and "the game" against harvard this past year(absolutely wild). He got a high ankle sprain two weeks before and vowed to play in that game (at least a series), then the back up went down and he had to play (and play well) for 3 quarters on a bum ankle.
Now my nescac son had Toal for his last year and started the Teel-era(wasn't great), but he played with the RB that is at Wisc and the other Mohong....something(RB at Rutgers).

People can talk about recruiting at the non-publics (P.C. had the Mich bound coach, who had ALL the parents numbers...lol)......but without the program/coaching, my son probably (definitely) wouldn't of been offered by Yale.....and my other son wouldn't have started his freshman year.

Can't wait for the season to start!!

Central Bucks South had a running back by the name of Josh Adams, who went on to star at Notre Dame and has been banging around the NFL for a few years. It was obvious in middle school that this kid was something special. He went on the record dozens of times and stated that he wanted to play at C.B. South (a tremendous public school, that regularly sends kids to the Ivies, Patriot and NESCAC conferences, among others.........in a bucolic part of Southeastern PA) with his friends.

That did not keep the head coach at Archbishop Wood from sending expensive cleats and other swag once or twice a year, telling Josh how great he'd look in the attire, wink, wink.

A few of us had enough. We went to the school, the diocese and to Harrisburg. These Catholic schools are hurting monetarily, closing down one or two every couple of years. The Philadelphia Catholic League is arguably the best high school basketball league in the country (with many of the kids not paying one penny to attend, hmmmmmm, how does that work?:) ) and coaches are pulling stunts like this................bringing in kids who can't afford the tuition, thus, their cost is being subsidized by all of the full tuition paying, non student athletes.

Thankfully, many parents are demanding action (they have zero interest in subsidizing athletes paying squatta) and we are getting the word out to everyone who will listen.

I'm happy that it helped your son and maybe the New Jersey private school scene is nothing but legit and above board.................but in Southeastern PA, it is nothing but a cesspool that will slowly crumble as more is exposed and as donors stop the spigot as they hear about the filth occuring daily.

Oh.............what of the former head coach at Archbishop Wood?? He just happened to "resign" a couple of years ago as he was "aching" to become the DC at Ursinus. Not!! We nailed his azz!! Next!! :)

Hawk196

I know one kid on my sons team that came from a poor family, the head coach (Toal) coached his father years ago. When the parents had a hard time with tuition(reduced because of income). Toal had a dinner for donations at Phil Simms house (Toal's son is married to Simms' daughter). I see this as OK because they are not subsidized by other students

No names, of course, but we have many of the same connections...as you know, we are friendly with the former ND captain who sent one son to the 'CAC (our friend, Pro Scout/Super Bowl Champ Shane) and another son to be a rugby star at ND (Spencer...we dropped the ball on that one....he would have been a superstar in the 'CAC)....we will have to connect and catch a game this fall...
