Can anyone who watched Bowdoin-Trinity yesterday confirm if QB Boels was benched/rested..... or injured ?

NescacFam

Lumbercat - We can confirm that Boel left the game in the beginning of the 2nd quarter with a suspected lower body injury.

lumbercat

Sorry to hear that- hope he can get back for the Colby game.

Tough loss for Colby today at Middlebury-

Cosgrove has done a great job in his rebuild of the Mules program. However, he has become less involved in game management.
He has rebuilt the Mule culture but at this point he's largely a delegator. His job is done on Mayflower Hill. The Blue and Grey need a young energetic guy to come in and take the baton from Coach Cos and get them to the next level.

.....Colby AD will do the national search thing........ Dugan is close by over at Bridgton.......A major NESCAC HCOF prospect is former Colby OC  Dave Dunn who would listen closely on a call from Mules from his home down in Miami and would be a good pick for the Mules.

Always thought Cosgrove would groom and nurture his replacement from within but most of his staff has moved on. Cos has taken it as far as he can.

Was definitely a brutal loss at Midd yesterday for the Mules. For most of the game, the Mules showed they were more the more physical team and equally, if not more talented than Midd.

However, I thought the game was decided on special teams, where Midd blocked a punt leading to a short field goal and Colby missed a short field goal of its own. Losing the turnover battle doesn't help either, but I don't think that is on the coach necessarily.

Colby was clearly more than prepared for Middlebury and let it slip away on one drive late. The defense will certainly be tested vs. the Jumbos next week on Senior Day, but I was very impressed with how physical they were today for 58 minutes...

Hurt Knee first quarter on crutches out for game

MidDay

Colby always plays Midd tough.  They came to play.  Midd didn't get anything going until the game was on the line.  Not sure if it was a letdown from a tough first loss last week, but the offense didn't wake up until the 4th quarter.  Hats off to the Mules.

MidDay

I new it was going to be a long day when NESCACMAN picked Midd to win.

Muleshoe-

Not saying by any means that the loss at Middlebury is on Cos. To the contrary I have the outmost respect for him and the job he's done implementing a new culture at Colby. He's done a great job....I'm just saying the timing might be right for him to step aside and let them bring in some young energy. The applicant pool for that HCOF job with those facilities would be astounding.

Unfortunately, we've heard that Boel's 2022 season is over. Feel really bad for him.

We're sure that will lead to another post from "Charlie" talking about the possibility of a Boel medical redshirt.

We picked MID by 4 and they won by 3. We did say it was going to be close and low scoring. The curse is broken...We "knew" they would win.  Unfortunately, Colby's defense is ready for prime time, their offense not so much. ;D

BigKat

Was expecting more drama towards the end of the season. Fingers crossed that happens for the old faithful.

Also, it's very clear the bottom of the league hasn't significantly closed the gap with the top few programs. They can hang for a series or three, then the size and talent disparity exposes itself quickly.

I totally agree with you - whoever the next HCOF is needs to bring some young energy to the program. With the facilities and the administrative support behind athletics, I think whoever is next (when that time comes) will be set up for success. At the end of the day, it will all hinge on how well they recruit.

I think NESCACMAN put it best that Colby's D is ready for prime time, but the offense is lacking. I think it starts with consistency on the line, as there are a few promising skill players. Not sure how good any of the QBs in waiting are, but I know all three backups come from strong HS school programs in CT (Choate, Suffield, and Darien).

Alas, I get ahead of myself. Two big contests left in '22 with a CBB championship to win! Go Mules!

BeTheMan

Would agree MuleShoe that Colby is definitely on a fast rise as a program. Over that past 3 years that I have seen them when they play us, it is clear that their culture has changed under Cos. Their defense is definitely nasty, but their offense has certainly held them back. I think there are two problems there: 1. QB play is not good. Lack of arm strength, panic in the pocket and is happier to scramble than let the ball fly. 2. Play Calling: Do they have a simpler playbook because of #1 problem above? Their offense has been in the bottom of the league for the past few years. They need to fix this asap if they are to be an upper tier program.
We have very similar issues also, but yesterday was a nice boost to the confidence level. This team since the Bates game has improved in bunches.

Boel is a junior and, under the COVID rules, has 2 more years of eligibility (I think).

As a University of Maine alum, you could swap out the school and type the exact same description of Cosgrove's teams in Orono.  A defense with a mean attitude and a chip on their shoulder, plus a very vanilla offense that can't take advantage of it.
