All-NESCAC team released:

https://nescac.com/news/2022/11/22/nescac-football-awards-announced.aspx

Mostly looks pretty good (as great a year as Lutz had, I'd make Berlutti POY, but he's got two more years to earn that award and coaches are always gonna go with the senior when in doubt).  Also, I think it's a bit odd that Tufts had three first team and two second team defenders given how much its defense struggled this year.  But I don't see any obvious omissions from the collective list of names, at first glance, who clearly belong ...
Is anyone else confused by the amount of slots allotted to each position group? No disrespect to any of the players who got it, because all were deserving, but 11 Linebackers total while only 6 Wr Total? Each have 4 positions Also 11 linebackers for 4 positions while only 11 OL for 5 positions on each team? Just seems to me that theres not really consistency.

Been a longtime follower but created an account to see if anyone had clarification.

Like I've been saying all along... If anyone ACTUALLY watched the Tufts defense, they were really good this year. It's almost impossible to pitch a shutout in modern football, but Tufts held most teams in check defensively and created a lot of turnovers and pressure.

I banged this drum the last few years but gave up once I realized it was pointless. There is absolutely no rhyme or reason to the positional allotments. Notice how the "ATH" spot will disappear next year too once Estevez is gone. They just try to highlight a bunch of guys even if it doesn't fit, which I suppose is coming from a good place. But it doesn't really make a lot of sense.

Transfer portal update....star Wes receiver and 2x 1st team All-NESCAC performer Logan Tomlinson has entered the transfer portal with 2 years of eligibility remaining. He also has a job offer from BlackRock so he has some great opportunities in front of him. We wish him the best of luck with whatever he chooses to do.

And for those of you that want to be reminded of his talent, you may want to watch his highlight film:

Congrats to all the all league guys but I'll second there were some egregious misses. Travel around the stat pages and it's pretty obvious which guys were slighted. If you are going to put 11 LB's on the team, let's start handing out participation trophies. Have a standard and stick to it please. Coaches are making this stuff up as they go year by year.

If these guys aren't going Patriot League or Ivies, stick we hear you Artie. Why play a couple snaps at 2-10 Umass? What's that prove? For the record HC would beat them by 3 td's when someone recently inferred they were next level up from PL.

If you have a NESCAC degree and have had a successful career at this level, why not pursue graduate work for free and see what D1 looks like? Sure going 2-10 wouldn't be fun but playing @ Texas A&M has to be a pretty cool experience. Going Patriot or Ivy would be great obviously but I think if you have already completed your undergrad there is nothing wrong with making something other than academics a priority

Spring, we could not agree with you more. BTW, why does academics not have to be a priority too? Why not have your cake and eat it too at a school like Stanford, Northwestern or Michigan? Not sure Nick or Logan have those sort of places as options but they are both pretty special students as well and there are plenty of schools where they could definitely play AND get a terrific (free) graduate education.

We would be remiss if we did not wish our fellow NESCAC Boardsters a Happy Thanksgiving. We hope that you enjoy the holiday with your friends and family. We are truly thankful for all of you. We may not always agree but we greatly appreciate all of you for your friendship and passion. Please be safe and enjoy the holiday.

I second that emotion, to quote a popular song!   We might be small in numbers but I thoroughly enjoy all of this dialogue.   Happy Thanksgiving to all.

I hope everyone enjoyed a pleasant holiday with family and friends.  We NY Giants fans aren't as thankful as we'd hoped to be.

Considering the moniker I use, I should to have mentioned some of this when we were discussing the merits of recruiting outside the NE-NY-NJ region.  Better late than never.

All-NESCAC Team selections of the past two seasons show that Middlebury has had success recruiting in the Nashville Metropolitan area.  One of the 2021 2nd Team linebackers was Montgomery Bell Academy's Gordon Pollock.  He didn't postpone his graduation to play a fourth season but over the three he participated in he missed only two games and earned a starting role as a senior.  Joining him on that All-NESCAC roster was another MBA product, punter Cole Crider, who earned 1st Special Team recognition and did the same this season.  Middlebury's Cole Kennon is another Nashvillian out of Ensworth High School, and while filling the two all conference QB slots with Berluti and Fetter was a no-brainer, it's not unfair to suggest that had he been healthy to play the full season, he'd have been in the candidate mix.  The 24 TD passes that Kennon threw in six games put him at #4 in the MC season record book.  One of them was a 17 yarder to Cole Crider who also played some at TE.

Brentwood Academy is another Nashville Metro school with players on the Middlebury roster.  One is Grant Yocam, a WR who came back for his fourth season seeing action in 18 games as a Panther.  He caught a few passes including a 22 grab against Amherst in 2019.  Another, Sophomore OL Josh Mondzelewski, is possibly awaiting his turn to play, assuming he can accept the idea of protecting an ex-Ensworth quarterback.  All three schools play each other.  MBA is 12-0, ranked #2 in the state and will play for the state title against #3 Baylor-Chattanooga who beat #5 Brentwood 44-39 last weekend.  Ensworth finished it's season ranked #9.

Only two other NESCAC teams include players from any of these three schools.   Worthy of mention is Ensworth's Cal Archdeacon, a junior DL who played well in six games for Amherst this season.   He had three tackles, a sack and a 6 yard TFL against Middlebury; and five tackles with a 9 yard TFL against Williams.   Ironically, Bowdoin's OL Brandon Krupp, who repeated as a 2nd Team selection, is a Brentwood native but attended prep school in Arizona.

Vandy, great point on the NESCAC/Tennessee connection. We think there are a number of factors which have led to the increase in participation from that area in the NESCAC: 1). Decent-to-very good HS football; 2). Very strong HS academics; 3). Significant number of Northeast transplants in the area familiar with the benefits of a NESCAC education (partially as a result of the growth in the health care sector in Tennessee); 4). Lack of comparable D3 schools in the immediate area; 5). Increased competition in the Northeast has resulted in many of the NESCAC's expanding their reach nationally.

Wesleyan also has a player from Nashville on their current roster, sophomore TE Braden Myers, and potentially several more in this recruiting class.

Sorry Scoops, but we are going to call you out on the comment that Tufts defense "were (sic) really good this year".

That is just not an accurate statement. The Jumbo offense was really good this year. Actually, we'll call it like it is. The Tufts offense was excellent this year leading the league in points scored, total offense, TDs, yards per play, and passing offense.

However, their defense was mediocre at best placing 6th in the league in total defense, 6th in average yards/play allowed, 7th in rushing defense, 6th in passing defense, 6th in average first downs allowed/game, 8th in 3rd down conversions allowed, and last in 4th down conversions allowed. They gave up 26 or more points in 4 of their 9 games and 20 or more points in more than half their games. The only teams they really held in check were the teams that had the more anemic offenses in the league including Hamilton, Colby and UBates. Tufts game up 20 points to a Lord Mammoth team that only scored 20 points or more points in one other game (against UBates). Those facts do not point to a "really good" defense by our standard.

Like we said, Jumbo defense=very average bordering on not very good. If we were HCOF Jay, we'd focus our recruiting efforts on getting some student-athletes who can actually tackle someone on defense.

Hello,

The purpose of this thread is for the Alumni of both Bowdoin and Amherst to explore playing a future FB game at Fenway!

If Cortland and Ithaca can play a game at Yankee Stadium, surely we can commit to pack Fenway, making the game possible.

https://www.cortlandreddragons.com/news/2021/9/21/football-2022-cortaca-jug-to-be-played-at-yankee-stadium.aspx

I think the secret to make this happen will be to set up a charity to benefit from the event and presell tickets to measure commitment.  If there is an overage, the charity can distribute proceeds equally to the charities designated by both schools.  Also, should Alumni want to see the game happen but physical attendance on the date not be possible, we can set up a way for the tickets to be gifted to local military members and lower socio-economic honor students and other worthy recipients to help ensure that the needed tickets are sold.  If you like the idea, lets collectively work together to bring this about.

I'm sure we can sell the 35 K tickets needed and hope it can serve as an Alumni Weekend for both schools in the cleanest, nicest big city in the US.
