Good point, but while measuring against the SCIAC makes sense in a U.S. News & World Report sense, it won't prove a whole lot in the Division III football world.

Charlie, love the passion but I need to correct you on one thing. There are no kids waiting on D2 offers before deciding on playing Nescac football. Same piece of land but a different pond so to speak. Ivies and Patriot league-absolutely. We spend a lot of time on these incoming frosh classes but it's so rare any of them play right away. Looking back at the classes 2-3 years ago? That's where the evaluations should be graded out.
I know it is debate but think that if all the players for Williams did not come back for fifth year they probably would not have won championship. The same could be said for this years Trinity ball club. It shows how that extra year of practicing lifting etc was huge.

That Williams team probably wins the league if the season is contested in Fall 2020 too---not sure how much bigger, faster, and stronger TJ Rothmann and Bobby Maimaron got compared to the rest of the league in the extra year off. The only factor I can think of is getting guys really and truly 100% healthy, but they would've been the best team either way.

I am not taking anything away from the Williams team at all. But you have to admit another game against trinity would have been very interesting. Like Tufts as well can you imagine the roll they were on going into playoffs. Just saying any hiccup in the season has drastic implications. It would be nice to stumble and get another shot come playoffs.

Imagine if they could have finals at Gillette or like we said quarter finals or finals at Fenway. It would be interesting.

Could having playoffs entice more kids to stay around for an extra year who knows.

Lastly, think about a team that has clinched playoff birth early and come the last game of the season in meaningless game could play their freshman and have them get some game time experience or rest the veterans. There are so many scenarios that would help everyones program. I know it is not going to happen but makes a great deal of sense.

Wasn't the score of the Williams vs Trinity game 42-3? What would have been interesting 3 weeks later? I would love to see a Williams vs Union, Springfield/WNE vs Amherst/Trinity, Middlebury vs Norwich, Morrisville vs Hamilton, Wesleyan vs CGA/Salve Regina, Tufts vs MIT, Colby/Bates/Bowdoin vs UNE/Husson opening game and maybe a plus one Bowl vs CCC/Liberty/NEWMAC. Already a long season, it they go back to a slim roster limit, would be difficult

Charlie and others ... the long-time NESCAC folks know what I am writing about ... it is important to understand as you posit about playoffs, extra games, and extra years that the NESCAC administrations accept and tolerate football at their schools but said acceptance/tolerance doesn't stretch one inch beyond that.   These schools hold their noses at having to use up 4% (approximate) of their student body for football players!  Think about that for a second ... one out of every 25 students on campus is a football player.    There have been pushes forever, off and on, to reduce the size of NESCAC football rosters, efforts which were never blessed by enough schools to make it happen.  I love your zeal but, respectfully, you are missing the boat here completely if you think that expansion of any kind is a possibility.  Retraction of roster sizes has a far better chance of passing then expansion of the number of games, including playoffs.

They JUST DON'T CARE!

I indicated before that this is just an opinion and that NESCAC would not change , alter or add games we are just purely speculating and fully understand what you are saying always good to dream though. We all understand that NESCAC wont change

As soon as the Ivies do it ( re playoffs), the Nescac will follow. That's your leading indicator.

For the casual hoops fan, any color on who is expected to contend in the league this year? A few have had a decent non conference start.

question to the best of my knowledge based on your statement the NESCAC follows the Ivies the Ivy League does have Spring ball for their teams. I understand this not to mean a spring game but practicing I think. If this is the case then why did NESCAC do a complete flip on this matter.

The Mole

Charlie, the league allowed Spring practice in 2022 with the missed season from Covid in 2020. Relaxed the roster limits (but still could not dress more than 76 on game day). I believe they are going back to not having coaches formally at practice for Spring 2023.

My question do Ivy leagues have spring practice. I know what the NESCAC has done. I am trying to figure out if Ivy Leagues have this and NESCAC chose not since NESCAC trying to emulate the Ivy League.

Lastly what is rationale for having all of these kids on rosters and only dressing a certain amount. I think if a kid practices ,  lifting and attending meetings what is the harm in allowing him to dress and stay a part of the team. Please dont tell me it a financial move.

Pat Coleman

Can't speak as to the NESCAC but in other conferences, there is typically a limit as to the number of people who can dress on game day, home or away.

nescac1

Logan Tomlinson has five D1 offers so far: Stony Brook, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Robert Morris, and Stonehill.  Not bad!

A month ago you would have never convinced me Tomlinson and Diawara would have d1 offers before lutz had any but congratulations to them!

This is a great accomplishment. However he will not be playing against CB like you see on Mid to lower tier NESCAC teams. I will say that in big games against a Williams last year and Trinity this year he disappeared and held with very little impact on games.

The Mole

You cannot help it, can you? I am gonna stop taking the bait Chuck. 10-112 and TD vs Trinity in November. We know Trinity is great and everyone else sucks.
