Thanks Mule
That's rumor only, that he may move on by his own decision. I agree he's done a fine job building a solid Football culture on Mayflower Hill.

Curious about roster size.    If the NESCAC schools only compete with each other, why wouldn't the ADs and Presidents insist on a standard roster size of 70-75 and force the coaches to live with that?  It makes no sense to increase the roster size to 100, putting pressure on the smaller schools, when a standard rule of X number of players in uniform each week - to be policed/monitored by each other - would alleviate the pressure.

Am I missing something here?

Regarding roster size, I have to imagine the rule will go back to 75 relatively soon, but they want to wait until all the lingering effects of COVID gap years and such wear off (basically, when all the guys who would have ordinarily have started in fall 2020 have graduated, which will be the 2024-25 season).  But 75 does seem like a totally fair limit and honestly I can see why NESCAC schools with smaller populations don't want to feel pretty to have 1 out of every 10 (or even a higher proportion) of men on campus be football players.

Speaking of Jeff Fans, based on this page, it does appears that Ochsenhirt is not returning for Amherst next year.  Given that he was certainly the most dangerous skill guy, the Mammoth fans need to hope that rumors of a D1 transfer at WR are true ...

Tim Swope is also a big loss for a player with eligibility remaining.

I feel the same why allow the high numbers and then not provide a preseason game , extra game or spring ball for these kids to develop. I think a great deal of talent going to be left out by these numbers that could be playing getting more experience etc. I still dont understand if you are going to have an open roster limit let them all dress what does it hurt.

I think though once NESCAC decides to implement roster limits they will go higher say 80-85 players and give the teams a few years to trim down rosters. When this does happen expect recruiting to be more selective given fewer roster spots.

I think it's become less popular as we advance post covid for players to want to squeeze out that extra year of eligibility.

In the real world, in this economy, job opportunities in many areas have decreased and the layoff cycle is in play in many of the vocations which have been fertile fields for NESCAC grads.

The scenario we are now seeing with student athletes leaving NESCAC programs sooner rather than later to pursue grad degrees is going to be the prevailing trend.

I've enjoyed this board as an observer for the better part of a year, and I guess I'm now here to stay. Though my son committed to play at a NESCAC school this summer, we refused to count our chickens prior to his official acceptance- which he received last week. I look forward to keeping up with the board a bit more actively now that I have a dog in the hunt.  Congratulations to all of the ED1 students and families who received good news this month.

Ironhorse-

Congratulations to your son. Enjoy the next 4 years, it's gone before you know it.
Where is your son going?

Charlie

crazy question anyone know who has gone on to the Pro's from NESCAC. The last one I remember was Mark Buben from Tufts back in the 80's

Thank you.  Judging from your posts that I've read, I'm guessing you'll be glad to hear he will be playing for Coach Coyne at Bates. Looking forward to some tailgating in New England over the next few years!  Hopefully I'll get to cross paths with some of you along the way. I definitely enjoy the insights and passion expressed here.

Welcome Ironhorse22!!

My son just finished up his first term at Bates and has nothing but positive things to say about Coach Coyne and the other guys on the team...the first year players are a very tight knit group and the tailgating at games is amazing!  Congrats to your son!!

Thats great to hear. I can tell you first hand that Coach Coyne is building a strong family concept within the program. The integrity of the program and this coaching staff starts from the top and will remain firmly intact with Coach Coyne leading the way. You have landed in great situation at the perfect time.

Could not agree more the staff is great and the College sdministration is behind the football program. Football field renonovation is in the works and new locker room. I beleive if they can keep staff in tact for years to come this program with its new culture will make a leap. Many football recruiters anticipate this school rebounding quickly
