The Mole

A true innovator and remarkable human being. Former HS teammate of my son played for him at Dartmouth--he and his father ran out of superlatives to describe Buddy. RIP

Very sad to hear today of the passing of Dartmouth HCOF Buddy Teevans.
A legend in New England football starting in the 70's when he was all scholastic QB at Silver Lake on Bostons South Shore.
Went to Deerfield and then to Dartmouth where he played QB..... also played 4 yrs varsity Hockey!

Started as an assistant at BU, then got HC job at Maine. Returned to Dartmouth as HC with great success. Then hired by Tulane HCOF.
OC at Illinois and Florida to HCOF at Stanford.
Afher his stint in the big time he returned to Dartmouth in 2005 and was running a fine program in Hanover.

Spent some social time with Buddy over many years stating in the late 70'S. Football aside, a great person with a ton of charisma.
Can't begin to say enough about his character.
A much bigger figure in NE College Football than most realize.
Very sad day.

Had the opportunity to meet him at Dartmouth.  A guy you wanted to spend time listening to and learning from.

Most importantly; someone you wanted your football playing son in the care of.

If you told me 5-10 years ago that Amherst would be 2-12 at any interval int the future I would have very strongly doubted it.
This amazes me at a great academic school with a great Athletic history which is arguably the most well known and desirable D3 Liberal Arts college in the country.

That being said I don't think they are as bad as they are being portrayed this year on this board.

The Mole

Thanks G&P. You can only choose each digit 1 through 5 once each, so a true confidence ranking. So get rid of a 4 and make it a 2  ;D

Also curious for others to provide their own confidence rankings....

Mole, just to plug NESCACMAN, as you are all too aware, we have been forecasting NESCAC games for 10+ years now and we pick at almost an 80% accuracy rate. We consider ourselves the resident expert on NESCAC football prognostication as a result of our longevity and accuracy. Several years ago we added spreads to our weekly picks. You can use the size of our spreads as a proxy for our confidence in our weekly game picks. This week's picks will be posted tomorrow and each and every Friday during the season. From what we hear, the student-athletes love them. We also take wagers on the side, right Spring???  ;D

Wow. The last time Columbia won the Ivy League, Septimius Severus was Emperor and Hadrian's Wall was partially destroyed by the Caledonians. What a time to be alive.  ;D

Horrible program. One shared title in 1961 with Harvard. Bagnoli tried to revive it, but health issues forced him to step aside. Cornell had something like 50 seniors in 2021 and still could not win. No administrative support with those two teams. Brown ain't much better but at least have been more competitive and have won a title in last 15 years--they got 3/4 from 1999 to 2008.

We would say somewhat (very) analogous to the NESCAC, as has been discussed ad nauseam over the years...Little Ivies mimic the Big Ivies in many ways...

Not meaningless G n P! I would be curious if you had to give them a confidence ranking, 5 being highest, 1 lowest how would you rank them?

For example:

Amherst over Hamilton 3
Williams over Bowdoin 2
Trinity over Colby 5
Tufts over Bates 4
Wesleyan over Middlebury 1

Quote from: GroundandPound on September 21, 2023, 08:20:18 AM
My more than meaningless picks...

Amherst over Hamilton
Williams over Bowdoin
Trinity over Colby
Tufts over Bates
Middlebury over Wesleyan

Wanted to provide variety to the confidence ranking;  couldn't....

Trinity
Tufts
Amherst
Williams
Wes

I know...boring...

And for the record, despite the noise you will hear to the contrary, NESCAC did not recognize league champions in football until the 2000 season....right off the NESCAC web-site. Thanks again Mole. We're sure you are working on it, but would be interesting to see the cumulative records (again) since 2000.

nescac1

The 2000 cut-off is definitely unkind to Williams as the Ephs dominated the conference from 1989 through 1999 (five undefeated seasons and four one-loss years, most of those years they were unofficial Nescac champs, though Trinity had a few as well).

Nescac - both the league and the individual schools - has awful sports record keeping.  Would be fun for each school, and the league, to hire summer interns to work on updating athletics anrchives and sports info websites.  It's really way sparser than it should be.  Even one summer worth of work could work wonders on the information available.

As for Amherst, I can't help but notice that 4/6 titles came during the Kelton era, when they could really load up on recruits they now have to split with Williams.  Hard to imagine that level of dominance will ever be reached again, but there is also no reason for Amherst, with a great football tradition, tons of resources and a great stadium, to be a sub-500 team more than once in a blue moon.
