Boy....things are heating up in the NESCAC..   (At least with respect to coaching staff uncertainty!)

I've heard the same thing WestCoast is stating more than once during his recent short coaching stints.

Punter:  Hamilton,

I recall someone starting a list of players who may have breakout seasons this fall.  Two I would add are Caleb Smith and Cody Weitzman, two rising sophomore RBs from Midd.

Trinity has best receiving corp because Sean clapp is that good

NescacNewbie

Just to keep some fun conversations going since we are only 5 weeks away.  Week 1 upsets:
Wesleyan over Middlebury. I think that Wesleyan defense is just too strong and some questions about Middlebury starting slow.
Colby over Trinity in OT. Colby has no film out there for an entirely new Offense and Defense. Trinity with a new QB and a lot of new players.

Ok..don't spear me too hard on these!

nescac1

I'll take Trinity over Colby and even give you 21 points.

Midd-Wesleyan feels like a pick em.  I don't think either team is a clear favorite.  Midd playing a new QB is a big question mark even with such elite talent on both lines.  And Wesleyan has nearly everyone back.

Scoops

Fun to think about Newbie, but there's absolutely no chance of Colby beating Trinity week 1. Even with the QB change, Trinity has too much returning talent at other positions. Not to mention the complete upheaval of the staff at Colby.

I agree with Nescac1 on Wesleyan/Middlebury. It's a pick em. The only real reason I call it that is because Midd will be playing a new QB. To say that the Wesleyan defense is "too strong" is laughable. They were in the bottom 3 of the league in almost every statistical category last year. Neither team can run the ball. Midd plays good defense, and has equal offensive weapons.

The Mole

4th in RUSH DEF 7th in PASS DEF. Also 7th in YPG, above Middlebury at 8th. Bottom three would be 8. 9 or 10, right? Led the nation with 5 defensive TDs. Have 2 All-League players returning at all 3 levels of the defense. Pretty Laughable.

My opinion: every game in the NESCAC not involving Trinity is a toss-up.

I think you have underestimated the Trinity defense this upcoming season. I will grant you they graduated a number of talented players. However the great job of Coaching last year and there prolific offense gave many Freshman & Sophomore's a great deal of playing time. They have a great DL core coming back and a ton of team speed and versatility at that position. Players to watch out for (Atkinson , Toyias & Ventura).

The LB corp is deep and talented. Although Trinity graduated some players from last year. However there recruiting at that position was outstanding they have several Sophomores that could start now on any other NESCAC team. The secondary will be there problem this year. A very young group fortunately this year other than Berluti no real throwing threats in the league. As luck would have it with the schedule juggling they won't be playing Tufts til mid season which gives them time to become a cohesive unit. On the flip side gives Tufts opportunity to see Trinity on film and also be ready. Tufts seems to always be slow out of the gate but picks up cohesiveness mid season so that should be great game.

look for the defense to carry the Load the first part of the season until the offense gets going.

This years overall recruiting at Trinity found OL the big emphasis.

Charlie, you are correct!!!  I based my position group rankings primarily on the number of all-conference returning players in each position group.  I do not know much about the non-all conference players returning or
starting for the first time this fall.  If you asked me to predict how Trinity's defense will perform over-all this year in points per game compared to the rest of the league, I would probably predict they would be in the top 3 and probably first in the NESCAC.  Why you say? They are Trinity, and in my opinion, until they are knocked out of the No. 1 Defense in PPG, they should be considered the returning favorites to repeat as the No. 1 Defense.  Of course, I and many others on this board do not want to see this happen, but if I had to place a wager on it, that is likely where my $$ would go.
