Quote from: lumbercat on November 16, 2024, 11:05:58 AMI think you will see 2 or more Bobcats on OL selections this Tuesday led by Sr left Tackle Pete Simplicio who was the leader of that unit and only guy on the line who was not a FY or sophomore.

I agree with Lumbercat about Peter Simplicio from Bates as a candidate for all NESCAC selection...having watched #73 for the past three seasons he has been excellent.

We agree that Simplicio deserves All-NESCAC recognition. Given the quality of offensive lineman in the league (guys like Forth and Perry are guaranteed 1st teamers, IOO) and UBates final record, we think he will  probably have a tough time cracking the 1st team, but we'll see. BTW, the Frisky Kitties should be well represented with guys like Lynskey, Beltran (after missing the first few games, he played an interesting role in that offense), and Rozich in addition to Simplicio leading the charge. Congrats to Coach Coyne on making progress this year. If they can figure out the QB situation in 2025, they could be on-track for their first winning season since 2012.

I heard Williams OG Forth has a try out with the Tampa Bay Bucs, has anybody else heard this?

Tryout? Isn't there a NFL draft.......

This is probably more like a scout visiting campus, which NFL scouts do on the regular, even in D-III.

100% correct and from what we understand, MANY NFL teams have made their way to a small campus in Vermont to check out a large offensive lineman there.

From what I've heard through the grapevine in Willytown, scouts out of Tampa Bay were really impressed with Forth's feet and his aggression when pulling which certainly served the Ephs well. Would love to see the kid playing on Sundays!

I'd be stunned if both Shuran and Maiuolo were not all league and I wonder if the (seemingly premature) Eph release just missed them.  Otherwise, these were exactly the Williams players I expected to make all-league.

They like him because he's 6'5" 278- (actually 6'5" and 3/8) but has minimal weight room hours. I guess the Ephs strength training acumen is viewed as significantly lacking. He's athletic and can run (great feet) so they can easily get him to 320+ and they might have another Marpet.
Marpet was a great find by the same Tampa Bay scout and they continue to watch the smaller programs in the Northeast.

N1-
How many All Conference guys realistically do you expect to see from a mediocre Williams team. Actually, 5 guys seems a little surprising- this isn't the 9-0 Williams team.

nescac1

Seven is not unreasonable for a 5 win team by historical standards.  Usually the best team gets around double that?

But more importantly, there is no way shape or form that the Williams kicker and punter aren't both in the top two at their position in the league. And these are individual awards. Let's see when the actual awards are released so we can discuss.

NescacNewbie

Did I miss something? Williams posted their all-Nescac selections and the rest of the league didn't? I reviewed the Nescac website and nothing there either.

lumbercat

Coaches know results in advance of the release tomorrow and maybe SIDs as well.

Not sure what the heck Williams is doing releasing the their All-NESCAC guys early, especially when they are not even the right guys.

Big time bad job by the Williams Sports information Department. We'll leave it at that.

N1, don't panic. Speak to us after you see the correct information.

Lumber, some interesting info on Marpet. One of the guys in on the decision to draft Marpet with the Bucs was Shane Scannell. Shane played at and graduated from Wesleyan. He started scouting for the Bucs just before the 2015 draft. Shane is still with the Bucs and is currently Director of Pro Scouting. He'll be an NFL GM someday. Obviously, having a D3 guy in the draft room won't hurt any small college guys chances with the Bucs. As an aside, Shane grew up as a neighbor of ours and his Dad was a Captain at Notre Dame. As we are sure you know, Marpet is the highest drafted D3 player ever. There are plenty of other interesting, unique things about Marpet but we'll leave it to you all of to Google him and check it out for yourself.

Just because you are top two/three in your position means little if you are on a mediocre team and you don't get the slots and/or have your coach go to bat for you. Have seen many kids ( and a lot of specialists) slighted over the last five years. And conversely many undeserving players get the all league recognition. Expect to be disappointed in many of the choices. As mentioned earlier, these aren't sabermetrics guys breaking down the data in a back room somewhere-it's mostly a beauty/popularity context in several close cases.
