Bowdoin is the only one we visited and I like Dave Caputi a lot, but all of the Maine schools are great.  So good luck to your son.  He'll enjoy it I'm sure.

thanks he looks forward to giving it his best shot, maybe we meet at middlebury sometime I hope, and thx

Actually, the boy going to Middlebury is not my son though he's in my son's class.  My son will be playing about 1500 miles away, at St. John's in MN.  I have a nephew who swims at Amherst, though, and I really like the NESCAC and their approach to sports so I try to pay attention to what they do.

3 schools 2 in minn looked at my son and actually wanted him to go their but he just felt more comfortable in the ne as we were originally from ct before moving to broward county florida, ur son should be happy theeir i love that place although it was not on my sons narrow (ugh) radar screen.

A reporter from the Trinity Tripod just released this article.....

edit: shorter link

I'm sure this will stir the pot!

Wow!, What a shocker.  Lets here form all the former Bants's justify this article.  It's unfortunate that all other NESCAC schools don't have the same pool of candidates as the Bants.

Nevertheless, it still doesn't matter becasue Trinity cares about athletics and doesn't want an even playing field, so they can lose.  Those years before Chuck P. got there were a tough pill to swallow.

Bant's  have enough firepower for the next 4 years to continue thier dominance.

chessdoc

so theres a direct correlation between low academic skill and good athletic ability. more likely trinity one by hard work, the thing i like about the coaches where my kid is going is we heard no sour grapes at all. By the way I think a more important indicator is did priores players graduate. If they did then nobody should have a beef. by the way my sons best buddies 2 lineman going to notredame have better boards and gpa then he did and their 6.8 320 and 6.300 respectivel;y his other buddy a back at stamford had similar grades all fromn the same florida high school. I think people should just get on the field and have too.

That article didn't really say anything of substance.  It is hard to understand exactly what the writer is trying to say.  Clearly, the writer is the type of person you see at Williams and Amherst who calls for the abolition of the football programs when their teams do very well.

I can say this with ONE HUNDRED PERCENT CERTAINTY:  Over the course of the past three years, the top/key/most important players on each respective Trinity squad would have gotten into Williams or Amherst.

*Blair: I don't know, or care to know, Blair's incoming numbers, but the kid was a true stud in two sports and would have walked into either Williams or Amherst (I went to high school with a kid that had a low B- and probably mid-1100's on SATs who was ONLY a wrestler and got into Williams).

*Leo: Transfer from an elite academic university who was clearly a gifted athlete and would have walked into Williams or Amherst without any problems, whatsoever.

One other thing I know for sure: Scott Farley (you know, Head's son), WOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN INTO TRINITY ON ACADEMIC MERIT.  He got into Williams and was a pretty dominant player for years.  Hmmmmm.

I know the game personally.  I got into Williams with a B/low B+ and 1180.  I went to high school with a kid with a B- and probably mid-1100's who go into Williams just for wrestling.

I know that the DOMINANT Amherst squads when I was a freshman and sophmore had a bunch of kids who seemed barely capable of spelling their own names.

All ya gotta think of is Scott Farley.  No chance of getting into even Trinity based on academic standards.  Walked right on into Williams.  MMM MMM MMM its magic.

I know a bunch of kids who went to Williams and played ball there during my four years.  I hung out with them a decent amount when I visited my friends, and I still see them today.  They weren't any different AT ALL from the Trinity kids.

But hey, I'm just speaking from actual, personal knowledge and experience.  That doesn't mean much I guess.

But look at Trinity's key players the last few years and tell me that they wouldn't have gotten into Amherst or Williams (especially the transfer from a school that is arguably better than ALL the NESCACS).

One thing I know: there are true, real dumb-dumbs on Amherst and Williams' football teams that wouldn't get into even Trinity but/for football.

Explain that one away.  "Oh, we lower our standards, but you guys lower your standards lower".  Bunch of gutless pukes and crybabies who want to blame everyone but themselves for getting the bag beaten out of them.

cruiser

nobody is saying williams/amherst aren't lowering standards. we don't have substantive proof of it, but it probably does/has happened. what we do have is proof that trinity is doing it actively and with much lower standards (2.5, 850) than it seems williams or amherst would stoop to. comparing trinitys admissions to williams or amherst is only using 2 other schools. what about the other nescacs? it also doesnt seem to me that the author was calling for the abolition of football at all, it seems more like the author wants a cleanup of the "mess". i don't think you can deny this anymore, especially with devanney and the AD confirming it with their denials. one cannot truly say what kind of candidates are getting in unless they work in trinitys admissions department or football office, but with this article and email that circulated to some trinity students, one can make the assumption that trinity is at least considering prospects that are much less qualified than the normal nescac student or even football recruit.

Pat Coleman

Maybe I'm crazy, but does one rookie assistant coach sending out an e-mail about admission standards mean that the school is actually admitting people with those "qualifications"?

No we don't. That's an assistant coach, not an admissions officer.

You should listen to yourself. You occasionally make sense. :)

So your son is at St. Thomas Aquinas?  His friends made a big hit with the Irish fans with their commitment to ND.  Great for them - D1 makes sense for some, especially if they think they can play after college, as those boys probably can.  For the rest, as a parent anyway, I like the balance D3 provides.

chessdoc

yes, and I as always agree with your feelings, we have watch some great kids come and go. My son has recovered fully from an injury so nescac is the perfect place for him. He has everything to prove he has worked extremely hard to get a chance and he is thrilled. He has 4 friends that clearly will play for many years and it will be nice for him to maintain these relationships for many years. As we are from ct we actually played pop warner against a couple of starters at other schools, it will be fun to see how the enviroment change effects  him.
