I always wondered how all-Nescacs were selected.. is it by coaches alone?

Trin9-0

To the best of my knowledge the coaches nominate their own players who they think are deserving of all conference honors and the other coaches either say yae, or nae.

I find it interesting that it is very rare for a player to have an outstanding year and go straight to the 1st team. In almost all cases a player will have to be named to the 2nd team before he makes the 1st team regardless of the fact that they may be better. Obviously there are exceptions, Avon Morgan, Trinity LB, had a breakout year and went straight to the 1st team.

For the most part though I think the coaches do a pretty good job of selecting the best players in the league for all conference honors.

Does anyone know if there was a rule stipulating that there needed to be at least one player from each school. Sometimes you see a decent at best player get all-nescac because he is from a low tier team when you know that there are 2 or 3 guys around the league at that position that are clearly better than him.

That is a fallacy....if you look at the lacrosse "All Nescac" there is not one Trinity athlete....that is an indication of their skill, but it also proves that it is not mandatory for a player from each team to be selected to the All Nescac teams.

If you look at the last two years, Hamilton has one kid buried in the second team. For example, we all knew that Holstag could run but did anyone really think he was the second best qb in the league two years ago???

That actually may be much debated, and maybe its just my personal definition of what a qb should be that defines my judgement in this situation, but I was never impressed by him as a passer or as offensive leader. I understand he picked up tons of yard on the ground but I thought that as a pure quarterback I thought that Pitcher, Gleeson, Colon, Moseley, and LeClerc were all better. His team also posted a 1-7 record, I think that a qb should be judged partly by the success of his team, and to me Holtslag didn't live up to the hype and certainly wasn't the second best qb that year.

I'll take the bait lineman....I dont think anyone will ever know how a player like Holtslag would have developed given the right offensive system and the most important thing of all, an O-line.  let me assure you Holtslag was very dangerous, but all you had to do as a defense was key him.  when your running game is a joke, and your defense gives up 35 points in the first half, it is extremely difficult to excel statistically.  while we are talking about hamilton, anybody remember in the 03 vs. trin game when they didnt get a 1st down the entire game (negative offesive yards?).  im still waitign for my t**** for that.

What are the best/worst places to play for visiting teams in the NESCAC? Best/worst facilities, fields, fans etc?

Also curious as to what people think are the best traditions in NESCAC football... any comments?

Williams' facilities are hardly great, but it does have two stellar traditions:

For home victories over Amherst, "The Walk", during which the entire team walks up Spring Street to St. Pierre's Barbershop, where beer, cigars, and lots of bizarre head-shavings await.  Since it can only happen at most once every two years, makes it doubly special.

For Amherst away games, where members of Pratt House run, sometimes naked, with a football all the way to Pratt field at Amherst prior to the game.

Hard to top those two.

Clearly the cheesiest thing I ever came accross in the NESCAC occurred when we were playing at Wesleyan.  They had some sort of brass band in the crowd.  It seemed to be school-sponsored, but there were only about 5 kids in it.  They could barely play their instruments and it was on and off the whole time.

Made it feel like D-5 football.  I say get a real band or no band at all!

Trin9-0

That band was almost as lame as the 2000-01 Trinity "cheerleading squad" that consisted of 5 or 6 mildly to severely obese co-eds doing cartwheels and repeating the same monotonous cheers of:

Trinity, pump it up
Trinity, pump it up
P-U-M-P pump!
P-U-M-P pump!
Trinity, pump it up
Trinity, pump it up

Listening to that while actually losing a game to Wesleyan was the low point in my college football career.

I agree with Trin8-0....it could only go up from there.

They were awful!!!

I heard that globe all-scholastic RB Mike Young from Norwood chose Merrimack over Trinity.  That kid would have been a stud.
