bant551: The Mount Unions of this world care about football in a way that is well above and beyond the way any NESCAC college (or most any other DIII college) cares about football or any other sport. Consequently Mount Union approaches football accordingly and produces a result markedly superior to what most other DIII colleges produce.

Was hanging with some Dartmouth kids tonight.  They're always having real tough seasons in the IVYs, which is a far cry from a Hofstra.  And they'd DESTROY Mount Union.  D-3 is D-3.  I really believe that.  Some leagues have depth that makes a mockery of the NESCAC, but that is because some NESCAC teams - as you mentioned - don't "care" as much about football I guess.

Wouldn't the same schools "care" more about lacrosse or at least about more of Dave Barnard's notorious "American" sports like basketball and baseball?  Something doesn't add up.  I smell a rat.

Plus, your head is the one with a shell on it.

Query:

If we are operating within the parameters of an all D-3 discussion (and this is COMPLETELY HYPOTHETICAL PEOPLE), and the other NESCAC schools do fine in playoffs, why does it seem people think football would get smoked?

-Bant551, Esq.

Because it takes 55-60 to play football and not nearly as many to play those other sports.

bant551: I guess it's your opinion vs. mine, and at least with respect to football never the twain shall meet. I could hold forth concerning the quality of the top of DIII football against the bottom of non-scholarship DIAA football or the quality of Ohio football against New England football, but I'll save my breath.

bant551

Top of D-3 football against lower-ranked non-scholarship I-AA, yes, I'd take the top of D-3 football.  But I'd also take the best recent Trinity and Williams teams and put them against the lowest of the low non-scholarship I-AA's.

I was recruited by Stony Brook way before Priore started moving them towards full scholarships, 2 years before he came to Trinity.  I did my homework.  No real size difference and the level of play wasn't impressive.  The fact that they were recruiting a wee little man such as myself to play O or D-line also made me skeptical of the level of play.

So there we are in absolute agreement.  Depth is huge, and in that regard, it is harder to field a dominant NESCAC squad... so I see where in most years it is MORE DIFFICULT for them to compete, especially if there are serious injuries.  But more difficult does not impossible make.

Late night with the Dartmouth boys, Bant?  And when do you sleep, Frank?

Here is an article about Trinity's hockey rink:

Was not happy about the selections :'(
I hate how they try and balance the picks out between the teams.
I hate to say it, but I don't know if anyone on Hamilton would start for Trinity or Williams...so why?

Bismarck would have said that the making of sausage, of laws and of all-star teams have one thing in common.

if i were a bantam fan i wouldnt be complaining too much about the all conference selections, considering trinity had 14 all conference players... tied with 8-0 williams and more than the bantams had in any of their most recent 3 undefeated seasons...

no way....not even close

Your insight has been considered and is now an integral part of my analysis.  While my mind has not been changed, your "no way" comment is now a part of my larger opinion.  Thanks.
