Interesting. Bates is apparently playing the Florida card. Let's see if you can lure Florida kids to Maine. Connecticut is a reach, but Maine.....?

chessdoc

last time I looked my son elliot went to aquinas, johnson naples, and yes theirs a direct conmnection to maine, its private but it flies. Its not the florida card just the kid wants a few friends around and yes his buddy foster got in ed1. by the way he was in the backfield with d.buter number 28 for uconn they are great friends

chessdoc

by the way, if u talk to either the moskows or the johnsons bates has been great, we did not know them prior to the season but their kids is great and they are great, between us, east coast and west coast of florida should send a few to bates, happy kids get more happy kids. The problem is florida education and nescac standards not florida kids going. When the freshmen played huson it was like brwoard county all star day.

Sir Spiedie

As the dad of a Fla. junior, I know the Fla. education thing is a real factor.

Then you know aquinas, my small son is the rb for nbp as middleschooler, we are probably gonna move over unless george retires in future at sta, if u need bates info can not say enough good things, gimme a shout go bobcats.

Sir Spiedie

Yes, I know Aquinas. I live in Lakeland. No, my son doesn't go to Lakeland. We play them, though.

chessdoc

oh wow, the bain of our existence, hands off to the naughts, a lakeland kid and an aquinas kid at bates together, that would be a hoot. gimme a shout, by the way were does he play, what position, any questions just ask. The coaches are great, fair trustworthy and eventempered. A great place.

Same could be said for the coaching staff at Alfred University, member of the Empire 8 and nestled away in the Empire State Hills 'neath the watchcare of sentinel pines...
There must be some football-playing Florida kids interested in fascinating field of ceramic engineering. There's always a bright future in ceramics. And if you want ceramics, there's no place like Alfred.

Saxons, in the extremely competitive E8 conference, have gone 25-8 in the past three years.

Tell me about the "Florida education" issue you speak of. AU has high academic standards as well.

PeP ---Lots of kids floating around down here with with 3.1-3.3 GPA's, and 1100 SAT's(old style)  which make them a reach for  many DIII schools. I think Florida schools have a hard time "coaching up kids" for the SAT/ACT I spend some time each week going over SAT word lists and working out math problems. I hope it pays off.

Send out highlight and 2 game tapes along with an academic resume.  Send it to schools in the NESCAC or other D-III conferences.  If they like you, they'll contact you back.  Might be "wasting" some money on tapes/DVD burns and postage... but if the teams are interested, they'll get back to you.  If the kid is a good player, they might be able to get past him being a slight "reach".  They do it at all NESCACs, to some degree or another.

Other than burning some money sending out films, it might end up being a great investment.  My highschool classmate and I ended up at Trinity, even though we didn't know the names of ANY NESCAC school until our friend sent out a game tape and the NESCAC coaches asked if there were any other kids on our high school team who could play at the NESCAC level.  We were then contacted by most of the NESCAC schools, including Williams.  We were right in the academic range you mentioned (slightly over 1100s on "old" SATs, about B/B+ in high school).

spiedie, I believe a kid with a 3.2 and 1100 SAT would fare well at the admissions office of many DIII schools. Maybe not in the NESCAC, which is pretty selective, but those kids would be fine in the LL or E8.

chessdoc

my kid 3.6 1340 got in by the skin of his teeth ed2, playing to sports, he is a decent player not great, saw the field as a freshmen, but given those facts, I believe most nescacs make limited exceptions, each school has rules, some do not require sats. Also, background and geopgraphy matter. Of course the degree of athletic ability drives as the coaches have limited number of choices. We count our blessings for being given a chance, now his little brother is another story, this kid can really play and we should enjoy repaying the favor and we will. go bobcats.

Does this mean you'll soon be sending another of your boys up to Maine to help turn around the Bobbies? Wouldn't he be happier at a place like, oh say, I don't know... Trinity maybe?  ;D

Bates....the very name conjures up thoughts of a certain motel in an Alfred Hitchcock flick that gives AUPepBand the heebie-jeebies when showering in an unfamiliar place. One could go psycho!

Speaking of Alfred Hitchcock, wouldn't your son much prefer the internationally renowned (for its ceramic engineering program) Alfred University in the picturesque foothills of the Allegheny Mountains in Western New York to Maine? Many many Maineacs(?) meander o'er many mountains, making their way to ALFRED U., the Maine attraction.

Alfred's football team (25-8 in the past three years), member of the rugged Empire 8 Conference, plays post-season games, unlike Bates. Check out the "Individuals Inspired" at: www.alfred.edu
