Today let us remember our Soldiers and Sailors who lost their lives at Pearl Harbor and those who survived the attack in our prayers and thoughts.

We owe so much to that entire generation.  I was just reading William Manchester's memoire of the war in the Pacific and of the 70 and 80% casualties suffered at Iowa Jima and Okinawa.  We would never have the stomach for that these days.

We are averaging very roughly about 2 American service people killed per day in Iraq; in WWII it was 375.

William Manchester was professor emeritus at Wesleyan when I was there.

Unfortunately, veterans of today's conflicts do not qualify for educational benefits that are nearly as generous (inflation-adjusted) as those of the WWII generation.  Here is a story about private philanthropists funding scholarships for veterans, including a program at Wesleyan sponsored in part by the son of George Soros:

The good benefits ended in 1978 when the government discontinued the GI Bill.  From 78 until 85 or 86 there was only the VEAP Veterans Educational Assistance Program.  For every dollar a military member contributed the gov would contribute 2 up to 8100 dollars total between the two.  The Montgomery GI Bill is much better than the VEAP but still not even close to the WWII bill.  The are groups like the VFW and other veterans organizations and some powerful politicians that are trying to increase the GI Bill benefits.  They want tuition, room and board and books paid in full and a small stipend paid to the vet.

My buddy Pat from the Marines told me they even hit you up for equipment lost in Iraq and Afghanistan (as if you were on a NESCAC football team and never turned in your helmet, shoulder pads, etc., after your last game senior year).

After much ado and after it seemed very likely he'd have to pay, a staff seargent got him off the hook, as some of his equipment fell off a truck that was attacked and partially damaged by an I.E.D.

At least they were giving him a token amount that barely cut into the total cost of his attendance at a local Community College!

I agree with all posters, and we HAVE TO do more for these people!

Nice article on Adam Arsenault from Tufts, who's scheduled to receive the NE Writers Senior Achievement Award.  It was a pretty gruseome injury to see at Williams in 2005....gotta give credit to him for all his hard work & dedication to get back on the field at all.  Had a helluva motor as LB Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2004 & until his injury.

Below is John Murphy's Yahoo article on this upcoming college draft. He does a position by position assessment and has Steven Hauschka ( Middlebury '07 ) of NC State as the # 2 kicker! Pretty good for our little league.

A quick statistical look at Hauschka indicates that he is an accurate placekicker but may not have enough leg by NFL standards. In 3 years at Middlebury and one at N.C. State he never was called to attempt a FG in competition of 50 yards or greater. Is there a reason?

If you want to promote division 3 sports, do a google search for pontiac game changing performance and vote for the only d3 play that will likely be seen there for a long time.  We only have a few days left and Appalachain State is currently in the lead.

A vote for Trinity is a vote for d3football.

Well, it won - but I'm not so sure it was a huge positive for d3football.  Can't help but notice the number of players standing around who flat out quit on that play.

It was late in the game, and those fat linemen were tired.

bant551

Haha, I noticed those fat guys flopping on the ground when I was watching the video with my brother.

There is one guy in particular who starts to get up, then flops on the ground like a turd.

With a play that long at the end of the game, however, I'm not sure that Glen Dorsey would be jumping over people, darting around and tackling people.  He'd probably plop down like a turd as well.  These 'lil guys are probably in better cardiovascular shape, especially at that very high level of d-3 ball.

Anyone heard anything on the recruiting front? I know schools and players are still in the process, but any word?
