Leadoff Man

Having Hoover gone from the lineup shook everything up for Trinity last year.  The team struggled to find infielders that could play above average defense while being productive offensively.  Claydon is an extremely above average fielder, but never really found his swing.  And, as the offense struggled to produce at the high production that the team was used to over the years, players were juggled into new roles to try to get some needed run support.  Coach Scannel tried about 5 different lineup options where quality hitters were inserted into middle infield positions that they had never played before, resulting in far too many errors.  And, as stated above by Just_Some_Guy, the more errors that were made behind the pitchers, the longer the pitch counts, and less quality pitches were being thrown.

Anyways, I honestly believe that having Hoover in the lineup everyday this year will not only solve the error problem, but also look out for him to have a tremendous offensive season.  He has yet to show anything close to his potential at the plate, and they will definitely need him to swing it if they want to make a solid run at it this year.  As for the performance and roles of the young players, only time will tell...

JSG,
Trinity-Concordia is the following weekend, 2/15-2/17.
Either that or my son is travelling to Tx. for nothing? ;)

IFD,
Glad to hear Jason will be in town for these games.  I will not be able to make it but Nick will be there.  He has been working out with the team and says they look really good.  We hope Trinity will return to the top spot in the SCAC.

Rhodes is trailing 5-2 to U. of the Ozarks in the bottom of the 7th.  Holt has gone all 7 for Rhodes.  Live stats at:

Great (in-region) win for Ozarks, 5-2 Final!

That also helps the ASC!

No additional scoring for the rest of the game, Ozarks defeats Rhodes 5-2 with the help of 4 unearned runs.  It puts the league off to an 0-6 start--hopefully Millsaps will break that streak this afternoon.

Millsaps breaks the 0-6 SCAC losing streak beating LC 18-9. Frank, what did you think of LaGrange? Who pitched for MC? Any highlights?

frank_ezelle

LaGrange looked good at the plate but they tried 6 pitchers and didn't really find one who was effective against Millsaps.  Before the game I thought that it was a bold move for Millsaps 1st baseman Quinn Salmon to switch to #13 this year, the number worn by Garner Wetzel 2 years ago.  Quinn went 4 for 5 with 2 home runs and 9 rbi's so I guess he doesn't need to worry about living up to the jersey number.

Millsaps beats the U. of the Ozarks 6-5 today.  It was a day where pitching had the edge over hitting.  Quinn Salmon added another home run to give him 3 and his 2 rbi's bumped his two game total up to 11.  Quinn's hitting in the 5 spot might force teams to pitch to Hunter Owen who had 4 walks in 4 at bats today.  That gives him 7 walks in 2 games.

Rhodes takes on LaGrange in the second game this afternoon.  It looks like Flanagan is getting his first start of the season.  See link below.

Austin College split its first doubleheader of the year with Texas Lutheran, losing 7-2 in the first game before run-ruling TLU in the second game, 10-0.  AC had a freshman pitcher post a shutout, giving up just 5 hits in the second game, and Bobby Schleizer, who missed all but 10 games last year, had a two run homer.

Run-ruling?  I don't remember that being invoked in a D-III game in the recent past.

Are there lights on the field at AC?  Was the run-rule invoked because of darkness?

Thanks

I know I've seen the 10-run rule applied at Millsaps in recent years. I just can't remember the exact circumstances of when it is and is not applied.

LaGrange bounced back from yesterday's loss to Millsaps to hand Rhodes their second loss of the weekend.  In the 11-6 game, Flanagan took the loss after allowing 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th.  He finished the day with 4 innings pitched, 3 earned runs, 3 walks and 1 K.  Brent Lindsey hit a grand slam for Rhodes in the top of the 9th but it was too little, too late.

Rhodes and Millsaps square off tomorrow and I'll be interested to see who starts for both teams.  I expect Jay Hollenbeck for Millsaps even though he had a rough relief appearance against LaGrange.  Rhodes has already started Holt and Flanagan, plus Chris Catalanotto pitched 2 innings this afternoon, and those were the 3 main starters for Rhodes last season.

Two big results today...

the in-region win for Austin College over TLU, and

the in-region loss by Rhodes to LaGrange!

Frank, you remember how much "wailing and gnashing" of teeth there was at the end of the 2007 season concerning Pool C bids.

Let's remember if these losses knock out either TLU or Rhodes.   :)

Box Two

For Austin College, it's always a good sign when you can get a performance like that on the mound for a true freshman. I also had forgotten about Schleizer's medical redshirt last year. With him, Reisig and Means in the middle that Austin College team is going to be a solid squad in the SCAC.

Austin College might be able to take 2 out of 3 from TLU if Chermak throws like he did last year. Might also see a bit of Adcock as well if I was guessing.

Oglethorpe took to the field against Maryville today in a double header. The Petrels were looking to get in the win column and trying to put the loss to LaGrange behind them.

In the first game they jumped out to an early lead but could not hold it long before they let the Scotsmen tie it up. Errors once again plagued the young team. They held things together and managed to plate another run to win the game 3 to 2.

The second game saw the Scotsmen take an early lead but the Petrels did not give up. They battled back and took the lead and never looked back. The kept the errors to a minimum in this game and posted 4 runs in the sixth to go ahead 6 to 2. That was the final.

The Petrels had solid pitching today and the defense managed to back up the pitching with some clutch plays. The pitching staff also held it together and mananged to get some key strike outs when they were needed. All in all it was a good day and something to build on.
