Trinity wins the first game of a double header over Concordia 7-1.  Evan Bronson pitched a CG 4 hitter, striking out 5.  A couple of freshman hit homeruns, Kevin Calbick and John Prato-Mathews.  Calbick went 4-4 in his collegiate debut.

The second game will have an audio broadcast as well:

Great start for the Tigers!

Good start for Trinity.  Rhodes finally had the bats come alive and they beat Huntingdon 13-8 this afternoon.  They didn't do the live stats and so far there isn't a box score posted so I have no details on that game.

OU got blasted today by Washington and Lee 19-4. The wind was blowing out at 20mph with the thunderstorms approaching Atlanta and 6 balls left the yard. OU threw three freshmen who got lit up for 21 hits. They play again tomorrow at OU, 3pm first pitch.

OU will have LIVE Internet Broadcast and LIVE Stats.

Trinity dropped the second game of the double header 7-5.  Brian Oates had a shaky first inning but then dominated.  I think he had at least 10 K's in his 6+ innings.  Evan Jones and Jeff Claydon hit homeruns for the Tigers but it wasn't enough.

The two teams will meet for one last game tomorrow night in San Antonio.

I know the regional wins are key, but I'm actually surprised Scannell was letting his starters (particularly Oates with his history of injuries) work so deep into the games this early.

I'm anxious to see which freshman emerge as key contributors for the Tigers, and to see how Stosh Hoover has developed offensively.

Oates and Bronson both were on pitch counts and barely threw over 100 pitches.

Stosh Hoover was also 4-9 for the double-header and played a solid SS, as usually.

As for Freshman contributors, Kevin Calbick who started in LF and went 5-9 on the day was a late addition due to an injury to one of the top Freshman Dylan Early. Prato-Matthews will also be a solid contributor as will Kyle Felix and Dominic Robusto. All California kids, actually, except Calbick.

historymajor

Bronson and Oates both looked good.  Defensive OF lapses in the first inning of game two was the difference as Oates settled in and recorded 10 K's.

Monday's 7PM game in SAT against Concordia will be webcast and hopefully the streaming video will be launched.

Details for the webcast on Tues at UMHB at 2PM are being worked out.

Check Trinity's website for links.

Four games in three days will be a good prep for the SCAC schedule.  The crop of FY's hit well, but need to work on staying focused defensively in a DH.

Barely throwing over 100 is usually a full day's work prior to conference play. I guess I just suspected they would be on something closer to 65-70 for the first weekend.

As while Hoover is pretty smooth up the middle he has had a propensity to make some errors in the past. His fielding % was under .900 his freshman year and only .929 his sophomore year.

I think he'll make less mistakes this year than in previous years, but I'm not holding my breath for .950+ though he's certainly capable of that. I think where we'll see the biggest difference in him is at the plate, and TU will need that kind of performance from him.

Looking forward to today's rubber game.

Oglethorpe had a little better showing today losing to W&L by the score of 7-2.

Sophmore John Hale went 6 innings allowing 8 hits and 3 runs

Concordia 6 4 2
Trinity       4 9 2

WP: Stephen Szkotak 6 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
LP: Michael Hunter  3 IP, 4 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, 3 K
S: Matt Aubry

Poffenroth pitched great in relief giving up 0 hits, 4 BBs, 5 Ks.
Both Hunter and Poffenroth a little trouble with control.

For Trinity:
SS Stosh Hoover was 1-2 w/ 1 run, 2 BBs
1B Jordan Pennington was 2-4 w/ 1 run, 2 2Bs, 1 RBI
3B Dominick Robusto was 2-3 w/ 1 BB, 1 run, 1 RBI

For Concordia:
SS Bryan Jacobs was 1-2, w/ 2 BBs, 2 runs
CF Patrick Mercer 2-5 w/ 1 run, 4 RBIs, 1 3B
LF Tom Williams had 5 BBs

Great series win for Concordia.

Trinity started 5 freshman, 4 from Cali and 1 from British Columbia.

Feedback I received is that Concordia is good.
Bronson did a great job with a number of scouts in attendance, many of whom watched his entire game.  Right now he is 84-87.  If he gets a couple more mph in velocity, he may have options for his senior year.
Oates also threw well.  Some freshman mistakes(probably errors/ruled hits) in the first inning cost him.
Trinity had very good chances to win all three but they made some youth mistakes and Concordia was very timely.
All in all, while Coach Scannell does not like to lose, he may be optmistic with this very young team.  If they don't lose focus, and continue to work hard, being very competitive against someone as strong as Concordia bodes well as the season progresses and the freshman hopefully become more comfortable and experience more success.

Thanks for the kind words about Concordia.

CTX (as they now abbreviate the school's name) is picked to finish 5th in the 8-team ASC-West.

Millsaps lost to local NAIA rival Belhaven College last night 6-5 despite outhitting Belhaven by a margin of 15 to 8.  It was a case of getting a lot of hits but not enough timely hits.

Tait Hendrix pitched well again, a performance that would normally be good enough for a win.  Hunter Owen went 3 for 5 to keep his batting average up over .500 and his OBP must be close to .700 or .800 when you consider all of his walks.  Millsaps hits the road at 8 this morning for a 3:00 game at Huntingdon.  While the Belhaven game was important as a local rivalry and part of a local trophy competition, the Huntingdon game is far more important since it is a NCAA D3 game.  The game will be broadcast--see earlier post for the broadcast link.

AC up to 4-2 after a 13-2 win at East Texas Baptist.  Chermak threw for the first time this season to pick up the win.
