Baseball is an odd game.  Yesterday Millsaps had 15 hits and lost a game 6-5.  Today they had 6 hits and won 10-8 over Huntingdon.

It was a game of a lot of freebies--Millsaps pitchers walked 12 batters and hit 1; Huntingdon pitchers walked 8 batters and hit 6.  That 27 base runners who got on without a hit or an error--it reminds me of the discussion about control that we had not too long ago.

The bottom line is that Millsaps didn't play real well and they still came away with a road win.  Next up for Millsaps will be single games this Saturday and Sunday with Piedmont--both games will be broadcast and the link is in a post about 10 posts up.  Here's the link to today's box score:

Question: How does Robert Flanagan get a win while starting and only pitching 3 innings? The game was only seven innings b/c of 10-run rule but the innings as a starter still apply in this case. And for that matter if the game is scheduled to go 7 innings the starter must go four innings. Some interesting scorekeeping to pad the stats? Any Rhodes fans that can explain the situation?

The actual rule book doesn't go in-depth on this. Here's the official rules:

"For all games of fewer than eight innings, the starting pitcher
must pitch at least four innings to get credit for the win."

"If the starting pitcher does not pitch enough innings, the win is credited
to a relief pitcher in the following manner:

(1) The winning relief pitcher shall be the one who is the pitcher of
record when his team goes ahead and remains ahead throughout the
remainder of the game. No pitcher may receive credit for a victory
if the opposing team ties the score or goes ahead after he has left
the game.

Note: Whenever the score is tied, the game becomes a new contest insofar as
the winning and losing pitchers are concerned.

Exception—If a relief pitcher conforms to the above regulations but pitches
briefly and ineffectively, the scorer should not credit him with a win. If a
succeeding relief pitcher pitches effectively and helps maintain the lead, the
scorer should award the win to that succeeding pitcher.

(2) By prearrangement, if three or more pitchers are to be used, the
pitcher of record shall be considered the winning pitcher.
"

I don't know how you interpret that, but I take it to mean Flanagan can
obtain the win in this situation via scorer's disgression on account of it
was obviously a pre-arranged pitching scenario.

How can you prearrange a 10-run rule? How can you prearrange a baseball game?

Stats are stats, Rhodes won and that's more important. Good test for Rhodes with Piedmont coming to town. The Lions are a veteran squad and have started strong.

Spence, it won't really make a dent in your total but I gave you a +1 for that one. :)

I've seen this rule used several times in the last few years... the prearrangement is that three or more pitchers are scheduled to be used in the game.  So even if it was stopped after 7 b/c of the 10 run rule, if 3 of the pitchers did get into the game the win can be given to the starter IF his team took the lead ()and maintained it throught the game)...

I was baffled the first time I saw it used... just as Lou_Brown is becasue he asked the question.  BUT it is in the colelgiate rules...  So as long as the coach states his intentions before the game starts and meets the criteria it isn't "padding" stats.

I agree with Frank about +1 for Spence...

when he was in the game was supposed to be inside the parenthesis... but my fingers didnt' type it in...    ???

Good win for the Lynx. I like that Piedmont team, they will give LaGrange a run for the GSAC title.

Holt looked good, has anybody seen Flanagan pitch this season. It seems like he's not striking out a lot of guys? Is his velocity down or i'm reading too much into the stats? I remember someone on here said he had some arm troubles in the fall?

Centre, DePauw and Sewanee open up this weekend, any thoughts from their fans?

Trinity takes Rutgers 11-1. Evan Bronson went 7, with 14 K's, gave up only one hit,  dominant performance. Jeff Claydon went 3-4 with 4 rbi's including a 3 run HR. Evan Jones went 2-3 with 3 rbi's including a 2b and a 3b.

Nice way to start the weekend.
