Millsaps won today's single game against Southwestern 13-2 in a game that was called for the 10-run rule in the 7th inning.  Millsaps had 8 runs in the bottom of the 1st which included a hit batsman, 2 walks, 2 infield errors, a wild pitch, and 4 hits.  It was not the type of inning you would expect from a Southwestern team.  The box score and play-by-play are posted on the Southwestern website (see link in previous post).

Trinity finished off the Hendrix weekend series with a mercy rule shortened 10-0 2 hitter from Bignall.  Nick Vera went 4-5 with a homer and two doubles.

J.T. Baker of Oglethorpe struck out 9 in 4.2 innings and had a perfect game going until an arm problem made him leave the game. OU went on to win 11-2 over a good Denison team who just swept LaGrange the day before in a doubleheader.

OU/Sewanee open up SCAC EAST Conference play on March 10th, 11th and 12th at The 'Thorpe.

In that win over Denison the SCAC All-Time 3-point king Josh Burr went 2-4 including his first home run in his college career...

Could a weekend series get more brutal than the Trinity-Hendrix matchup over the weekend?  Trinity outscored Hendrix 35-0 and Hendrix only had 3 hits over the weekend.  Hendrix is a young team but I think they have more talent at the plate than what they showed this past weekend.

I also think Southwestern is better than what they showed this weekend but they are going to struggle against the better teams if they don't improve their fielding.  Southwestern had 13 errors this weekend compared to 2 for Millsaps.  I'm not sure if it mattered in the 11-4 loss but it was a major factor in the 7-6 loss and then it took all the life out of SW when they committed 2 errors that helped Millsaps score 8 runs in the 1st inning of the last game.

Dirty South,
Do you know anything yet on what exactly happened to Baker? Will he be able to go this weekend?

With basketball over I now have some time to take photographs of the spring sports.  This weekend was hectic and I was taking photos of 4 different sports, but I did get photos from the Sunday baseball game between Millsaps and Southwestern.  I've given up on trying to find the time to add captions to the photos.  Here's the link to the main menu and you'll see the baseball link and then the link for the Southwestern game:

I recommend taking the slideshow option and it will go through all of the photos or you can click on any of the small photos to bring up the full size photo.

Millsaps only scored in one inning but that was a 17-run 5th in a 17-3 victory over Piedmont College.  I only saw the last couple of innings so I missed the fireworks but it included grand slams by Luke Morrow and Garner Wetzel.  Tait Hendrix got the start and the win.

Millsaps upped their record to 11-3 and Piedmont fell to 6-5.  Of some minor interest, two of Piedmont's wins this year were against Adrian College, the team that eliminated Millsaps at the regionals in 2005.  Of more minor interest, Millsaps has played well against a good non-conference schedule.  They are 1-0 against 14-4 Belhaven College and 8-2 Huntingdon College, and they split 1-1 with 8-2-1 East Texas Baptist.  Those schools are a combined 29-5-1 in their non-Millsaps games and 1-3 vs. Millsaps.

That bodes well for Millsaps... looks like they may be the team to beat down south. Is Wetzel the real deal??
Baseball is not a game that builds character, it is a game that reveals it.

The Rockies must have thought Garner was the real deal last year and I don't think he has done anything this year that would change that opinion.  It must be tough for the pro scout to project major league potential when the prospects are all using metal bats.  In the case of Garner, he hits the ball so darn hard that I guess they think he'll be a successful hitter when he switches over to wood bats.  It's nice to have him in the middle of the Millsaps lineup for one more year.

Trinity put a thumping on Concordia (NE) last night in SAT.  A four hitter this time, Adam Frey only gave up one hit in five innings... got the win.  TU 12 - CUNE 3

Franklin and Marshall comes to town (from Lancaster, PA) for three this weekend....  I see they're favored to win their conference in PA.... anybody know anything more about them?

With Franklin and Marshall just starting their season (1-1 record), it might look like a mismatch for them to come down and play a Trinity team that is playing well and is well into its season.

However, the Franklin and Marshall win was an 11-1 victory over preseason #7 Alvernia with F&M getting 18 hits.  It will make for an interesting matchup in San Antonio.

In totally unrelated news, Millsaps won 16-4 last night in 7-innings against Rust College.  I haven't seen a box score but I suspect it was a game with many non-starters coming in mid-way through the game. Millsaps plays at Rhodes this weekend.

TU more than atoned for the loss yesterday to F&M handing them a 15-3 shellacking.  Drew Bignall went seven giving up only 4 hits and 1 earned run with 7 K's.

F&M is a fine club and should go far this year.  The players, coaches and fans were a class bunch!
