The TLU starting pitcher plunked the first 2 batters, and then Coach Miller brought on Brad Wesson who got the win for 4 innings work.  Brian Wallace, who has had 11 appearances and 2 starts, gave 4 more innings. (McMurry did not see either on their weekend series.)  Austin Yager got his 5th save.

This was a very good outing for the Bulldogs.  That has to help the confidence of the deep staff.

TLU 6, Trinity 3.

I was taking photos at the Millsaps-LaGrange game yesterday.  I must have over 100 photos of Millsaps batters taking a pitch.  This is a hard stat to believe, but LaGrange pitchers (6 of them) combined to walk 17 batters yesterday.  The 3, 4 and 5 hitters for Millsaps (Carter, Wetzel and Abrams) each walked 3 times.

In continuing on a theme from yesterday's post, Millsaps scored in 6 of their 8 at bats.  It's a trend that needs to continue this weekend.

A couple of thoughts.

It may not make much difference, but I think I would prefer to have a weekend series like Rhodes and Millsaps have this weekend rather than have a full week off prior to my first SCAC Tournament game.  Again, probably not much of an advantage/disadvantage either way.

Last year it was the 1E vs. 3W winner that got to play a loser bracket team in the second round.  Millsaps was the 3W, they won thier first game and that gave them a matchup with the 3E team while Trinity and Southwestern had to face each other in the 2nd round.  This year it is the winner of the 1W vs. 3E game that gets to play a team out of the loser's bracket.

IF Millsaps sweeps Rhodes this weekend (that's certainly not a given), I'm not sure how they determine the 1W and 2W for the seedings.  Whoever the 1W is, will they pitch their #4 starter in the opening game in an effort to save their top pitchers for later rounds?  I bet they will.

I wonder what the over/under would be for total runs scored in the Rhodes-Millsaps series this weekend?

Both teams have played 37 games with Rhodes at 26-11 and Millsaps at 28-9.  Rhodes has scored 10 or more runs 18 times, Millsaps 17 times.  Rhodes averages 9 runs/game, Millsaps 9.8.  The teams split two games in Memphis and scored a combined 51 runs in the two games (21 for Rhodes, 30 for Millsaps).  It sounds like Saturday's doubleheader could take a while.

By the way, Millsaps is an impressive 16-3 on the road with the losses being at Rhodes, Trinity and East Texas Baptist.  That should be a confidence boost when they go on the road for tournament play.  On the flip side, Hendrix is 1-16 on the road this season but that win was a victory on the Millsaps home field.  That should be a reminder to never take any team too lightly.

Hard to believe that the Majors punk Emory twice recently and Emory is ranked #1.

These are the coaches' regional rankings, just so everyone knows, the ones with the coaches Top 30 national poll.

BFB... I agree with your use of the term punked....  When beaten by a punk, I guess you're punked!

As expected, Millsaps rolled Rhodes today 4-1 and 8-0... setting up a showdown of sorts tomorrow..  Rhodes seems to have come a long way, but Millsaps IS the team to beat!

Millsaps got great pitching from John Fox and Todd Kindler this afternoon.  The first game was a pitching duel between Fox and Robert Flanagan with Millsaps managing to scratch out 4 runs against Flanagan.  Fox improved his record to 7-0 and Flanagan dropped to 9-3.  I assume that Flanagan will pitch the first game of the tournament for Rhodes and that's bad news for RHIT.

In the second game Todd Kindler improved to 8-2 with 8 innings of scoreless pitching.  It was the best game I've seen him pitch all year.  With a combined record of 15-2 it is obvious that Fox and Kindler have pitched well all year but they seem to have taken it up a notch towards the end of the season.

It will be interesting to see who starts the game tomorrow.  Fox and Kindler have started 13 and 12 games respectively and 5 pitchers have combined for the other 14 starts so tomorrow's starter could be just about anyone from the Millsaps pitching staff.  I'm going to guess that it will be Jay Hollenbeck who is 3-0 with a 1.54 ERA but that's just a guess.

While pitching was the story for Millsaps, I should mention that Hunter Abrams went 5 for 6 in the doubleheader to push his average up to .409, third best in the SCAC.  He also added 6 RBI's to move into 2nd place in the SCAC in that category.
