The SCAC started off with some low scoring games, Hendrix losing 4-2, Southwestern winning 3-2, and Rhodes losing 3-1.  Those might not have been the first 3 games completed, but they were the first scores I saw posted.

Since then the scores have jumped:  BSC beating Schreiner 13-10 and Trinity 10-9; Trinity beating Schreiner 10-9; and Concordia took a 10-2 win over SW to even that series.  Does that mean the talk of a power dropoff with the new bats was much ado about nothing?

It's too early to tell, but a lot of runs doesn't always mean a lot of extra base hits.  Trinity and BSC combined for 24 hits--20 singles, 3 doubles and a HR.  Can you imagine just 4 extra base hits between these two last year?  Of the 19 runs scored, 3 were earned.  BSC committed 3 errors, Trinity booted the ball 7 times.

On the other hand, Trinity and Schreiner only combined for 17 hits, but that included 7 doubles, 2 triples and a HR.  The majority of the hits were for extra bases.  Maybe the connecting element between these two games is that this game had 7 errors and only 7 earned runs.  While outstanding fielding has always been a key to success, it certainly looks like it will be even more important this year.

Millsaps and Rhodes play this morning at 11.  It's possible that the game will be webcast.  If so, it will be at this link:  http://atwsportscast.com/Colleges/Players/Millsaps%20College.htm

Millsaps starts off the season with two wins, scoring 4 in the bottom of the 11th to trump the 3-spot put up by Rhodes for a 12-11 victory.  Then they followed that up with an 18-8 pounding of the U. of the Ozarks:

I haven't seen the box score for the games, but the Rhodes game was one where both teams made a considerable number of errors.  My gut feeling is that the new bats will lead to more grounders and small ball, and that's going to lead to more errors than we've seen in the past.

Trinity popped BSC by a count of 10-2 yesterday.  Ben Klimesh, who took a no-hitter into the sixth, allowed one earned run in seven innings and Michael Panozzo pitched two innings of shutout ball.   Jonathan Hall went 4-4 with a home run and 4 RBI, Christian Muscarello had two doubles and a triple as the Tigers outhit the visitors 15-5.

Millsaps and Trinity open up the SCAC with wins over Hendrix and Austin respectively.  The game at Millsaps was dominated by pitching as the Majors won by a scant 3-1 score.  Aaron Williams went 7 for Millsaps, allowing one run, and Jason Riggins came in and pitched 2 scoreless innings for the save.

The Trinity game had a little more pop, with the homestanding Tigers getting an 8-4 victory.  Elsewhere in the SCAC, OU and Rhodes are still looking for their first win after each fell by 10 runs today.  OU gave up 17 hits in falling at Emory, and Rhodes had a nasty home opener, losing 18-8 to Huntingdon.  The only other game on the slate is Maryville at Birmingham Southern, a game that has just gotten underway.

All of these teams matchup again tomorrow, with Rhodes and Huntingdon playing a DH and all the others playing a single game.

A better day for SCAC baseball as Rhodes and Oglethorpe pick up their first wins of the season.  Rhodes topped Huntingdon 6-3 and Oglethorpe picked up a 7-5 victory over Emory.  Don't have any score on the second Rhodes game or the game between BSC and Maryville.

Don't know how Trinity and Austin are doing--live stats aren't up for this game.  Millsaps and Hendrix are tied 3-3 with Millsaps coming up with their 1-2-3 hitters coming up in the bottom of the 9th.

Millsaps and Hendrix going to extra innings at 3-3.  Trinity leads Austin after 7 and I believe the score is 13-8.

They must be hitting the ball much better in San Antonio than in Jackson.  There's hardly been a well hit ball in the Millsaps game.

Millsaps wins 4-3 when Kevin Wall scored from second on a bunt.  It was a sacrifice to move the runner from 2nd to 3rd, but Kevin never stopped running and beat the throw home by the first baseman.

Don't know if anyone out there was listening (or if anyone is even on this board other than Ron), but I've had a terrible time with the Millsaps webcast so far.  The video freezes most of the time.  The audio is better, but it is constantly pausing for several seconds and then picking back up.  I'm constantly having to refresh the page to get caught up to live action.

Anyone else having these problems?  I greatly appreciate Millsaps and the announcers for providing this service, but I probably won't bother trying to listen to future games.  And BTW, I have a new computer and the fastest DSL service offered by BellSouth.  There have been no problems with receiving downloads to my computer, so I think the problem is with Millsaps sending out the webcast.

Pretty stiff breeze out of the south may have accounted for some of balls hit out of the park in SA today, Frank.  Kyle Felix had a nice day with 7 RBI (3-4) including a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh after AC had tied things up in the top half of the inning.

Cubs Win

Frank,

I watched most of the Millsaps/Hendrix games this weekend and I experienced very few interruptions in the broadcast.

frank_ezelle

Thanks Cubs Win--if others are getting the webcast okay then it must be something on my end.

I have the fastest DSL offered by BellSouth and I tried rebooting the modem, rebooting the computer, closing every other window, but still I never got more than 15 seconds of uninterrupted video and never more than about 30 seconds of uninterrupted audio.  It has happened exactly the same on all three games that I've tried to watch.

I'll investigate more on my settings.  My fear is that I'll have to go back to the ancient days of waiting for the story and box score to relive the game.

The wind helped, but TU had 17 hits, with 12 singles.  SCAC baseball is up and running for the Western division.

Frank, are you using a wired, or wi-fi connection to you Bell South DSL?  I have found that wi-fi can come and go when watching a webcast,,,  a cat-5/6 connection is always the best bet.

Having seen 3 games so far, not really so sure the bats are going to play that big a role. Our game 1 saw 3 HR
only 1 in game 2 but a handful of DBL's in both 2 and 3.

OU hitting was non existant  at best, in games 1 and 2, but came around a little in game 3 most positive about game 3 was the come back.

OU usually comes out of the gate fast and then hits a bit of a skid maybe the slower than usual start is a good thing for us.

I have seen a lot of movement of position players and am somewhat surprised by this, as it looked as though the defense was in pretty good shape and pretty easy to set up for this season.

As usual, pitching is going to be an issue and utilization of the talent could be a question mark. Some coaches make up there minds and are right to the bitter end win or lose.

at any rate good luck to all in the season and hopefully we will see you in Tennessee, BSC is still not eligable don't ya know?

I'm using a land line and never have problems with anything else like watching HD videos or other webcasts.  Next game, which is Tuesday night against MS College, I'll fool with the settings on the ATW Sportscast website.  There is a option for "Connection Speed" and my setting has been the recommended "Detect Connection Speed".  I'll try picking my own connection speed or some of the other options and maybe I can find a way to fix the problem.

Trinity is knocking the ball over the field again today, up 13-3 at Mary Hardin Baylor in the top of the 8th.  They have 17 hits with freshman, Nicholas Iacovello having 4 and Senior Kyle Felix standing at 2-5 with another HR, and 4 other starters also having 2 hits apiece.
Klimesh has given up 6 hits and struck out 9, through 7 full.
