Trinity is certainly living up to that preseason #1 ranking in the SCAC.  It's good for every team in the conference when an SCAC team wins a non-conference game, so go Tigers and 'Roos and Petrels and Pirates and Panthers.  And of course, go Majors as they take on MS College this evening.  The video link for the 6 o'clock Millsaps game is:  http://atwsportscast.com/Colleges/Players/Millsaps%20College.htm

Also congratulations to Aaron Williams of Millsaps on winning this week's pitching award and Jonathan Hall of Trinity for winning the offense award.  It's not surprising that Millsaps and Trinity also shared the awards in the first week with Will Hawkins and Ben Klimesh taking the honors.

Tuesday in the SCAC--a very good day:

BSC beat LaGrange 10-0 this afternoon

OU is up 4-0 over Piedmont with OU still batting in the bottom of the 2nd

Austin fell 5-4 to Arlington Baptist--if that's an NAIA team then it doesn't factor in for the NCAA D3 ratings.

Southwestern is beating Howard Payne 12-0 going into the top of the 7th.

Trinity wins over Mary Hardin Baylor 16-5.

Millsaps wins this Tuesday evening 8-7 over MS College.  That moves the Majors to 5-0 in a start where they are finding a way to win rather than dominating their opponents.  While a stretch like this won't last for an entire season, it is something that keeps the potential for a great season alive.

Millsaps story:  http://www.gomajors.com/news/2011/2/15/BB_0215111953.aspx

Here's the MS College link to the story and box score:  http://www.gochoctaws.com/news/2011/2/15/BB_0215112902.aspx

With 14 hits and 11 walks, MS College got 25 runners on base and 18 were stranded over the 9 innings.  Millsaps did a far more effecient job of scoring runs with their 9 hits, 5 walks and 3 hbp (Jules Roussel picked up all of these--he has now been hit 7 times in 5 games).

Millsaps started the game with a freshman making his first college appearance and they used 7 pitchers.  Not necessarily a pitch by committee approach, but I do think they were trying to get some pitchers a little action prior to the 3 game series at Southwestern this weekend.

At 5-0, Millsaps is off to a great start, but they will probably have to pick it up a little this weekend in order to take 2 out of 3 at Georgetown or to have any hopes of picking up a sweep.  With the veteran team that they have, I think they'll have a good shot at doing well on the road this season.

I think it bodes very well for the Majors season as they are winning with little offensive production.  They will hit the ball, but it is great to know you can win when the Offense isn't clicking.

I wonder what Millsap's record is in one run games the past few years.  It has to be outstanding.

found it, since 2007, they are 20-13 in 1 run games.  i would have thought it was much higher, they just find ways to win

Was curious what the weather would be like in Georgetown, TX this weekend--it looks like the Majors will get to play in some decently warm weather, something of a rarity compared to the last month of practice and games.

Yahoo's weather reports often have some oddities to them.  The current Georgetown report at this link ( http://weather.yahoo.com/united-states/texas/georgetown-2409678/ ) says that Friday night and Saturday morning will have "Areas of fog with some patchy freezing drizzle late. Low 58F".  Can you have freezing drizzle when it is almost 60 degrees?  That's freaky weather.

Freezing drizzle or not, when the teams hit the field there will be a lot of seniors in each dugout and both teams will have high hopes of getting into the NCAA Tournament.  Southwestern's pitching staff in particular is an area full of senior talent:  http://southwesternpirates.com/sports/m-basebl/2010-11/releases/20110126tf9kvi

With Millsaps, this will be the first 3 game weekend so it will be interesting to see who comes out as the third starter.  Last year as a freshman, Wes Perkins won the pitcher-of-the-week after holding Southwestern to 1 run in 6 innings for a victory.  I wonder if the Majors will use Wes on the mound this year now that he has taken over as the starting catcher.  If not Wes, then maybe last year's hitting surprise Jason Riggins will become this year's pitching surprise--he has only given up 1 earned run in 10 innings this season.  It will be an interesting weekend for the Majors and clearly an important weekend regarding the SCAC West race--but aren't all weekends important when it comes to that highly competitive division?

Frank, do you have any Idea what is happening with the Millsaps Video for this coming weekend games. Missed MC game on video down here on the Bayou. How will this weekend be telecast?  As for as Wes Perkins behind the plate that is his normal position coming out of Dutchtown High in La. It is always good for a coach to have a extra pitcher available if he is needed when the time comes.  Wes has always been able to go back and forth as needed. But from what I have seen so for at the games I have been able to attend there have been a lot of  young pitchers stepping up and doing a good job along with the junior and senior Pitchers allowing Wes to get back in the groove behind the plate. Riggins has been outstanding on the hill along with many others.

I knew that Wes was a catcher coming out of high school and that his stints at 3rd base and 1st last year were due to the presence of Tyler Berry behind the plate and the need to include Wes' bat in the lineup.  If possible, I suspect the coaches would prefer to keep Wes as a catcher only.

On this weekend, I believe Southwestern does do a webcast of the games but it is a paid subscription deal.  If memory serves me right, a person can sign up for something like 1 month for about $10.  While free is better, I guess $3-4 per game beats the cost of driving to Georgetown and paying for gas, good and hotel bills.  I do believe that live stats are also available for free.

Maybe you know the status of Blake Boleware this season--I hope that is spelled correctly.  He looks like he could be or will be a tremendous pitcher for Millsaps, but he hasn't pitched yet this season.  Is that an injury and if so, any word on when he'll be back in action?  He and Elliot look like they could be a great duo for the next 3 years.

A slugfest in Alpine as Trinity takes the first of three from Sul Ross, 16-10.   Kyle Felix was 5-5 with 2 HR, Kevin Calbick 5-7.  Thanks to @fastbatbb for the tweet with info.

I dunno, Ralph, but with 34 hits including 10 doubles (7 TU), a triple (SR), and 4 HR (all TU) - something was going on.   TU starter Ryan Lucero gave up 4 runs in 1 1/3rd (4 hits, 4 walks)and had to be relieved by Noah Solomon, who picked up the W by allowing 4 in 5 2/3rds.    On the other hand,  Sul Ross'  starter, Fry, took the loss after allowing 4 runs in only 2/3rds of an inning.

The bright side for Trinity (other than rapping out 19 hits) was that they didn't have any errors for the first time all season.

What a disappointment that Southwestern isn't proving live stats on the baseball games this afternoon.  I spent the morning taking photos at a 2-year old's birthday party, then at noon I spent time at the funeral of the first cousin in my generation to pass away.  A tiring and somber day that had me looking forward to checking in on the Majors.

Maybe they will try to do the live stats for the second game.

All tied up at 3-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh here in Sherman between AC and Hendrix. Hendrix led 3-0 heading into the sixth but AC had a two out rally to tie things up. Both starters are still in the game (Smoyer and Steed).
