Millsaps wins 6-2 at LaGrange yesterday.  Brent Buffa went to 2-0 on the season with a complete game (he had 10 complete games in 12 starts last year), giving up the two runs in the bottom of the 9th.  Hunter Owen went 2 for 3 with 2 walks and 2 rbi's--the two hits were a double and his 4th home run of the season.  I'm fairly sure that his batting average is still at or above .500 and his slugging % might be over 1.000 (5 doubles and 4 home runs in 8 games).

John Pacillo has also been hot lately with 9 of 15 in the last 3 games including a walk-off HR to complete a 5 of 6 night against Belhaven, a 3-run HR against LaGrange on Thursday, and 3 of 5 with a double yesterday.

Millsaps still has a lot of things to work on like most teams at this point in the season but it seems like things are going fairly well for the early part of the season.  I guess Travis Bogue will start today but I don't know who else will start this weekend.  They might go back to Tait Hendrix and they might give someone their first start of the season.

Thanks Ralph, now I feel like eating some breakfast and heading back to Peoria.

Couple of side notes... Sandy Alderson spoke to all four teams assembled in one big group of fans and players from all around the US.  He thanked them for their love of the games and hard work on and off the ball diamond, and told them he has a special place in his heart for D3 athletes.  He challenged everyone to do teir best to graduate on-time and maybe he'd see some of these same players back here in a major league uni some day.  Nice!

Kevin Kouzmanoff (OF Padres, traded in off season from Indians) stopped by the webcast and signed a few balls.  His brother Ky plays (well) for Hastings.  Kevin went to school at Nevada-Reno and holds the distinction of being the first (and only) major leaguer to hit a grand slam in his FIRST MLB at-bat.  Wow!

The Trinity University Tigers baseball team came back from the consolation bracket to win the Peoria Classic Saturday night at Peoria Stadium.  Trinity beat Whitworth (Wash.) 3-1 in the opening game Saturday and then defeated Washington and Lee (Va.) 13-7 to take home the championship trophy.
The Tigers went 3-2 at the tournament and stand at 5-4 on the season. Trinity takes on Texas Lutheran Tuesday at 2 p.m. in a non-conference game in Seguin.

Millsaps won 14-3 at Piedmont Saturday.  Travis Bogue got the win, giving up 2 hits in 5 shutout innings.  This gives Millsaps a 7-2 record on the season.

With the hectic nature of SCAC basketball ending up and all of the spring sports starting up, the stats on baseball are understandably behind on being posted.  I said yesterday that I thought Hunter Owen was over .500 with a slugging % over 1.000 but I can't verify that.  Yesterday he went 5 of 6 with a double and a triple so that didn't hurt his numbers at all.

Justin Carter went 2 of 5 yesterday with a home run and Jason Hadley was 2 of 3 plus he drew 2 walks, had a double and drove in 3 runs.

The two teams play again today with a 1:00 Central time first pitch.  That game can be heard at:  Radio Link:  http://www.espnradio1240.com/listenlive.php

The Millsaps-Piedmont game scheduled for Sunday has been rained out.  They were talking about making the Saturday-Sunday games into a Saturday DH as early as Thursday because of the weather forecast--it's a shame that didn't get worked out.

Millsaps next plays this Tuesday against Huntingdon and that game will be broadcast with an opening pitch at 4:00.  The webcast link is:  http://www.espnradio1240.com/listenlive.php

Right now basketball has center stage as well it should so it is hard to get caught up with all of the baseball stats.  I pulled up the Millsaps Box Scores from the LaGrange and Piedmont sites to get some info for this week's sports email.  I was impressed in the output by Hunter Owen in the three road games:

8 of 13, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 homes run, 7 rbi's, 4 stolen bases

Add in his 3 of 5 against Belhaven earlier in the week and I think he has a good shot at another Hitter of the Week award.

Trinity goes up against TLU at Seguin on Tues.  Trinity's ace Brian Oates scheduled to pitch.  TU comes in just having racked up the championship in a tough Peoria Classic Tourney in PHX.

History,
You forgot to mention that Lutheran is currently 10-0; this a huge game for both teams (Western Region). Are you planning to "come-on-down" to Seguin and webcast it? I hope so.

ETG, no unfortunately my trip to AZ will keep me here thru Wed. (seeing my (f)ailing dad).
Trinity will 'try' to webcast, or we were hoping TLU would be webcasting it.

I finally did get some updated numbers on Hunter Owen's fast start this season.  These come from a story about the 14-3 win over Piedmont (http://www.d3baseball.com/pressreleases/Millsaps/2007/02/25/Majors-Pummel-Piedmont-14-3/1643)

"For the season, Owen is batting a stellar .588 (20-for-34) with 21 RBIs, 14 runs, 40 total bases and four HRs. He also holds a 1.176 slugging percentage through nine games."

I know there is a triple among those 20 hits so it looks like he has 9 singles, 6 doubles, 1 triple, and 4 home runs in 9 games.  I don't expect the numbers to stay at this level for the entire season but it is an impressive start.

Looks like we're back to our loosing ways.  I was naive to think that the 4-0 start was the start of a change... after loosing our next 6 I can see that there is plenty of work to be done-  mostly in the fielding aspect of the game.   Quick note from the Adrian game tonight in which OU lost 9-7 in which Adrian scoring two in the 9th.  Two inning stuck out BIG TIME to me, the 1st and 9th.   OU started off the game going down 5-0 in the first, Adrian played 5 runs on 1 hit assisted by two errors.  In the 9th they plated to 2 go ahead runs on 0 hits a few stolen bases and yet another error.  By my calculations they scored 7 runs on 1 hit in those two innings.

I know these guys have what it takes!  I know they're eager to win!  I hope they'll put all the pieces back together and get back on the winning track!    I'm pulling for you guys.

It was easier to quote this than to type it again.  Beautiful day at Millsaps, Tait Hendrix on the mound for Millsaps--no score in the top of the 2nd.

Millsaps beat Huntingdon 21-2 yesterday.  Link to story:  http://www.millsaps.edu/athletic/baseball/022707story.shtml

Millsaps plays 19th ranked and 5-0 Emory this Saturday and Sunday at Millsaps.  Both games will be webcast at the normal link and I will put a post up later with the times and the link, etc.

Millsaps and Emory have played 4 times in the last 2 years with Millsaps winning all 4 games.  That includes 2 games in Atlanta last year when Emory was #1 in the nation.  I'm sure both teams will go with their best pitchers and they will be highly focused on winning--it should be a great series with great weather in the forecast.

Emory took the opening game against Millsaps this weekend by a 5-1 score with 4 runs coming in the 8th to break a 1-1 tie.  The two teams play again today at noon (Central time) and that game will be webcast.  The link is in multiple previous posts.
