What I want to know is if Lynx P Chris Catalanotto is any relation to MLB's Frank Catalanotto ...

Just received word that today's game between Millsaps and East Texas Baptist has been postponed until tomorrow due to inclement weather.  The two teams will play two 7-inning games tomorrow afternoon in Marshall, TX.

Trinity split a double header today at Howard Payne.

HPU 4 - TU 3 in the opener and TU 16 - HPU 3 in the second game.

Both teams are now 1-1.

Millsaps split a doubleheader with East Texas Baptist on a cold, windy afternoon in Marshall, TX.  Both games were 7 inning contests.

In game one, Millsaps' starter John Fox surrendered 10 first inning runs before watching his Majors storm back to even the score at 14 runs a piece in the top of the 7th inning.  A wind-aided homerun in the bottom of the 7th was the difference for ETBU in a 15-14 win.

In game two, Millsaps kept ETBU from having a big inning en route to a 24-11 victory.  Todd Kindler picked up the win for the Majors.

Apparently, ETBU has a hitters' park.  A combined 63 runs were scored on the afternoon in just 14 innings.  I am not aware of any other particular except that Millsaps did not hit a homerun in the second game, which is pretty amazing considering the amount of runs scored.

Also of note, with the win Millsaps' head coach Jim Page is just one victory shy of reaching the 400-win plateau.  His current record stands at 399-255-1.  This is Coach Page's 18th season as the Majors' skipper.

Regarding Young Field, the diamond at East Texas Baptist, it is touted as a hitter's park on the ETBU website:

"Young Field has long been recognized as a hitter-friendly park, and ETBU's offensive numbers in recent years indicate that fact -- the Tigers have ranked consistently among national leaders in runs per game, home runs, batting average and slugging percentage since moving to NCAA Division III status in 1998. The park especially favors right-handed hitters and is a nightmare for southpaw pitchers -- the wall in leftfield sits only 325 feet from home plate. Distance to centerfield is a standard 400 feet, while the rightfield fence gives righthanded pitchers a bit more cushion, sitting 335 feet from the batter's box."

In the limited box score in the Jackson newspaper it only shows 4 HR's for the day, all by ETB players.  Millsaps had 31 hits over the 14 innings which included 8 doubles.  In the second game Millsaps had their own 10-run inning plus a couple of 6-run innings--the scoring line in both games looks a lot closer to church league softball than college baseball.  The next game for Millsaps is Tuesday against local NAIA rival Belhaven College.  It's a 6:30 start on a day that is predicted to have a high of 60 and a low of 43.

In a seperate post, thanks Ralph for all you have done and are doing to make this baseball board a success.  It goes without saying that your efforts are appreciated by all who post here and I'm sure that number is greatly increased when you add in all who read the message board but aren't inclined to post.

Oglethorpe drops two more games to Huntingdon in Alabama on Sunday 6 - 8 and
0 -3

Oglethorpe has lost the first three games by a margin of 7 runs.

I think they have their home opener on wednesday

Trinity opened with a split at Howard Payne, losing the opener 4-3 before demolishing the Yellow Jackets in the 'nightcap' 16-3.

Heading for Home:

A loss is a loss and a win is a win. But its nice to see OU at least competitive this year. As long as the pitchers keep you in the game they'll pull some of those close ones out..

Millsaps / ETBU:

Good gracious!!! How about some pitching please....I don't care how short the fences and how windy it is, you can still throw strikes and you can still hold teams under double digit runs!!

East Texas Baptist was 34-11 last year so they must have some talent but I wonder how much the home field played into the ETBU 2005 national rankings in the following stats:

BA -- 5th -- .359
Runs -- 12th -- 9.2 per game  (Millsaps was 6th at 9.5 per game)
HR -- 4th -- 1.42 per game
Slug % -- 3rd -- .565

I'd like to see a breakdown of their numbers on the road vs. the numbers at home.

I believe that Millsaps' pitching will come around.  The multi big innings for both Millsaps and East Texas Baptist in their weekend matchup would normally be considered unusual for most teams.  But both of these clubs can apparently hit.  While I can't speak at all for ETBU, Millsaps has consistently been known as a hitting team.  Coach Page is a "let's try to get three outs as quick as possible and come in and hit" type of guy.  But he certainly knows his pitching, too.  In fact, the top three pitchers on the SCAC career wins list are all from Millsaps.

The Majors play Mississippi College Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson.  The game will be the first Cowboy Maloney Series game of the season.  Millsaps will be the home team.

The Cowboy Maloney Series is the annual baseball series between Jackson-area schools MC, Millsaps, and Belhaven.  Each team will play the other three times, and the team with the best record at the completion of the series will be awarded the "Maloney Trophy."   The Cowboy Maloney Series is sponsored by Cowboy Maloney's Electric City Superstores and owner Con Maloney, who is a Millsaps grad.  The Maloney Trophy will be permanently displayed in the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.  An identical trophy will be given to the winning institution each year.

Millsaps won the inaugural Maloney series in 2002.  MC won it in 2003 and 2004.  Belhaven won in 2005.
