SCAC Post Season Recognitions--Post 4

It was a little harder finding the West All-Region teams since the ABCA's website is still showing the 2007 team under All-Region.  I was able to find a listing on the University of Redlands website:

http://www.goredlands.com/sports/bsb/2008-09/news/05_20_09_BSB_All_Region

SCAC players on the 2009 ABCA West All-Region team are:

2nd Team:  Jordon Pennington (Trinity)

3rd Team:  Kyle Felix (Trinity), Daniel Ward (Hendrix)

will there be a 2009 all west, all south gold glove team announcement forthcoming ?

frank_ezelle

I just returned from the Millsaps Baseball Banquet and that was the first I heard that Billy Murphy of Millsaps won the gold glove for shortstops in the South Region.  The other SCAC winner was J. J. Rizzo of Oglethorpe.  That's quite an honor for both of those players.

Regarding the banquet this evening, it was a really special occasion that focused on the seniors first and then on what the team accomplished this year and over the last 4 years.  Millsaps graduates 10 seniors this year and the character of that group will be missed as much as their talents.  I was glad to be a part of the celebration.

Evan Bronson, TU 2009, was selected in the 29th round (again) by the Washington Nationals.  Congrats!

Daniel Sarisky from Oglethorpe was selected in the 40th round by the Houston Astros... I wonder if he stays or goes?  Either way Congrats to Bronson and Sarisky!

I heard through the grape vine that Sarisky signed a deal with the Astros.  Being a fan of Oglethorpe baseball it hurts to lose a kid who hit 95 mph on the gun multiple times.  You just don't replace that type of arm easily or at all.

I wish Daniel the best of luck and I am very excited to follow an ex Oglethorpe baseball player throughout his professional career.

As far as what type of money her received I don't know, butt I will continue to try figure out

It looks like Daniel Sarisky won't be terrorizing the SCAC East hitters with that fastball any more.  He apparently did sign and is listed on the roster for the Greeneville Astros:

Daniel Sarisky sees his first action as a professional, pitching 2 innings of scoreless ball with 3 K's as he picks up the victory.  Good luck to this former SCAC standout:

It's July 8th already!   Let's hear some 2010 predictions!! :p

PetrelBaseball

How about we start with the Petrels? Lose two guys to graduation, their # 4 pitcher and their 8 hitter. They will return their whole offense and pitching staff with two guys coming back from injuries. The rest of the East loses some key parts, including Rhodes' holt, bizzel, and mosby. Centre loses their ace also in Jones and their 3 hitter Williams. I am finally predicting the now experienced and motivated Petrels will come to shine in 2010. Their 1-5 hitters all hit above .330, and their infield is one of the best with a talented shortstop in Cornwell and South region gold glove winner Rizzo anchoring down the hot corner.  It's all going to depend on the arms that the Petrels will put out on the mound. Briend, Hoban, and even Cornwell looked like 3 very promising starters last year and Kennedy in the bullpen was lights out. The departure of Sarisky to the MLB is going to have a severe impact on the arms in the pen and also to the mental side of the boys on the squad. If they can get past this, and bring in some quality freshman and maybe an arm or two from a transfer, the Petrels may possibly be the team to beat in 2010.

(Story taken from the Millsaps College website)

EDINBURG, Texas - Former three-time D3baseball.com and ABCA All-American Hunter Owen of Millsaps College has signed a one-year independent contract, with an option for a second year, to play with the Edinburg Roadrunners of the United Baseball League.

"I'm really excited to get the chance to play," Owen said. "It's been a dream of mine to play in the major leagues one day and I'm ready to get started."

The ULB is an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas that include Amarillo, Coastal Bend, Laredo, Rio Grande Valley and San Angelo.

Owen joins former Millsaps right-handed pitcher, John Fox, as an independent contract signee who also played for Edinburg one season in 2006. Fox went 2-3 with a 6.54 ERA in seven starts, hurling two complete games and striking out 39.

In his first game, July 10, Owen went 2-for-4 with an RBI in a 7-4 Edinburg win. He was the DH but should see time in right field.

"Ever since the season ended, I've been working hard and staying in shape," Owen said. "I just need to work on being consistent everyday and putting good swings on the ball. As I face better competition everyday, I'll try my best to keep improving."

The Roadrunners, formerly the Edinburg Coyotes, are currently 13-15 on the year under skipper Vince Moore and sit in fourth place in the six-team league.

Thanks for posting that about Hunter.  It was odd that they pinch hit for Hunter in the third AB of his third game.  In yesterday's pregame show the announcer said that Hunter had injured his hand and was expected to be out for a series.  I hope that's not anything too serious and that he'll be back in the swing of things soon.

ALSO, as has been hotly discussed on the football website, the SCAC has come out with new decisions on ways to cut cost and benefit the welfare of student-athletes.  On the plus side, the number of tournament participants have been reverted back to the same as they were this year.  On the negative side, all SCAC teams will be limited to a maximum of only 90% of the maximum number of games allowed by the SCAC.  (See Millsaps story:  http://gomajors.com/news/2009/7/13/GEN_0713094740.aspx  )

For some sports this might not be too big a deal.  For baseball where teams like Millsaps, Trinity, Rhodes, DePauw, and maybe others are candidates for at-large berths, this rule could be a killer.  I would hate to see Millsaps drop NAIA Belhaven from the schedule--they are great competition and the schools are only a mile apart so it's the most cost effecient game on the schedule--but I don't think Millsaps can drop 4 NCAA D3 games when those games are critical in getting an at-large berth.  So for Millsaps, this cost saving rule might have the effect of causing them to drop the least expensive games on their schedule.  Go figure.

Good morning Frank,

Millsaps' schedule had three Belhaven "mid-week" games.  IMHO, that is the value of those games, and probably won't be cut.

There was an early season trip to Piedmont for a DH that can be cut.

Millsaps could cut the Louisiana College.

Illinois Wesleyan is a non-region game that does not match primary criteria used by the selection committee.

There are four.

Or Millsaps could start the season one week later.   :)

No doubt about it, the SCAC's cuttting the season hurts the ASC as well.

frank_ezelle

Ralph, you are right that they won't cut the Belhaven games.  They are part of a 3-team competition which also includes MS College, plus they are the least expensive games on the schedule.  Dropping a trip to GA makes the most sense, be it LaGrange or Piedmont.  That would be in keeping with the spirit of holding down costs.

Regarding this entire cost cutting program, I personally prefer the loss of 10% of the games over the cutting back on teams making the tournaments.  I am very glad to see this decision reversed by the league presidents.
