Was it last year or the season before that Millsaps had great January practices because the temps were in the 60's and 70's for most of January?  This morning it is 19 degrees with the lower teens predicted for later in the week.  It could be worse.  Currently it is 6 degrees in Greencastle with a high of 21 expected later in the day.  Or, it could be better like the current 30 degrees in San Antonio with a balmy 54 predicted for later in the day.  Global warming?  I'm ready for some global warming at the moment (but I'm sure I'll think different around August).

Cold weather or not, Millsaps is scheduled to start the season one month from today, hosting the U. of the Ozarks in a DH on Feburary 5 and a single game on the following day.  The first SCAC action will be a 3-game home series with Hendrix on February 13-14.  The campus is still closed for the semester/Christmas break and I've wondered if the baseball players would be coming back early to start practice.  I'm not sure of the NCAA time frame for starting practice, but there are extra costs associated with the players coming back early and I'm not sure how much they could get done given the weather.  My guess is that Millsaps will crank up practice next Monday and hope to be ready by the 5th.

It's hard to believe that the season is so close to starting for the teams in the South.

Had mid-60's weather in Jackson today after starting off the year with two weeks of colder than normal temps.  Will Hawkins was listed on the 2nd team of the D3Baseball Preseason All-American team.  I believe he was the only SCAC player listed.  Here's the link for the complete list:

I was wondering what happened to Hendrix' Caleb Schallawitz, the FY pitcher from last season who threw a gem in the final game of the SCAC championships. He is not showing on the Warriors 2010 roster. Anyone know anything?

Caleb is at Central Baptist College - I hope he has a great season; a couple bumpy outings across town, but otherwise a real good 2nd season.

WAKE UP SCAC BASEBALL FANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There hasn't been much to talk about so far, but that will be changing soon.  Southwestern gets things kicked off this weekend with an alumni game on Saturday and the season opener on Sunday.  Southwestern was a powerhouse in years past and has fallen off the pace in recent years.  If they get back on track then the SCAC West will go from brutal to extreme brutal.

Austin is the next to swing into action with a game next Tuesday and then Millsaps throws out the opening pitch 8 days from now on Friday the 5th.

Saturday (2/6) is the big day with Oglethorpe, Hendrix, and Trinity kicking off the season and Southwestern, Austin and Millsaps all have games scheduled for that day.  Obviously the SCAC East has some delay due to weather, but you can always get your baseball fix by tuning into the Millsaps webcast.  Many of the games will be on the web and I'll try to keep reminders posted throughout the season.  Here's the link for the SCAC 2010 schedule:  http://www.scacsports.com/sports/bsb/2009-10/schedule

Frank,
thank you for the link.
I just read on the SCAC that Millsaps is once again the pre-season coaches pick to win the conference, followed by Trinity. Historically, those are always an "oh no!"
It looks like Coach Page will again field a top team, with 2 DI transfers handling the middle infield positions. When he suggested to Coach McCain that they "recruit top talent or Coach McCain might be spending time at the Vermont All Star camp", I guess he made his point. ;D
From what I have heard, Trinity could well be starting 3 freshman in their infield. They are supposed to be very, very good players; some of the best Coach Scannell and his staff have attracted.
Doesn't seem fair, though, that freshman would be expected to compete with DI transfers!
Maybe Millsaps and Coach Page would be willing to give some runs??? ;)

Trinity hasn't posted a roster for the 2010 season yet, but they do have a preview of the season on their website.  It seems like Trinity and Millsaps will be very similar in having a solid core group of upperclassmen supported by a very talented group of newcomers.  Should make for the continuation of a good rivalry for years to come:

Also, the Southwestern game vs. the Alumni was rained out today, but they are still scheduled to play tomorrow at Houston-Victoria.  Hard to believe that SCAC baseball opens up less than 16 hours from the time of this post.

Really great game!  Lots of "high hope" for the 2010 Tiger season (starts Saturday).

ETG....  come on,,, you told me froze your butt off and spent most of time in Bell Center trying to thaw out.  Sounds more like the report of an eternal optimist????  Streaming vid was hard to watch, but thx for the report!

Southwestern opened up with a 2-0 victory.  SCAC is 1-0 for 2010!!!

(but it think Houston-V is a NAIA school so that win doesn't matter much to the NCAA)

I will have to admit that in following Trinity, Southwestern, SCAC and ASC baseball over the past 10 years, I have never heard of Houston-Victoria.

According to their website, UHV is currently an upper-division and graduate campus with a total enrollment of around 3500.  It added athletics in 2007 and will enroll its first set of underclassment (~200 freshman/sophomores) this fall.   They are an NAIA independent, offering only softball and baseball as intercollegiate sports - but will add golf and soccer next season.   The baseball team won the 2009 Association of Independent Institutions baseball championship.

Anyone notice the preview on the South region had no mention of the SCAC West. It only mentions the East and absolutely nothing in the West? ???

It also said that BSC won the East which is untrue because they're not eligible. Yes, they were 10-5 along with DePauw, but not recognized as the East winner.

Not an interesting read at all. Wish JD would've gone more into detail.

Ready for the Majors to get it going on the diamond!

I'm also ready for the opening pitch this Friday.  Regarding the preview, most of the SCAC West teams are in the West Region so that half of the conference is covered in the preview of the West.
