It is a shame Lucero didnt make all tourney......his stats certainly deserved it.

"It is a shame Lucero didnt make all tourney......his stats certainly deserved it."

I was surprised that none of the top three Trinity pitchers made the season All-Conference team.  I'm not sure who I would kick off the list, but combined they were 18-3 with a mid-3 ERA and more than 150 IP.

I think that had to do with the fact that only conference stats are used.  Klimesh went 3-0 against ASC teams and then wasnt used very much during those weekends.

Trinity is only #5 in the first west regional rankings.  As you will see the West is stacked.  Millsaps, after going 1-2 at the SCAC championships, is ranked #3 in the South ...

Some of the teams ranked above Trinity should lose between now and the tourney, which could result in higher rankings and thus better seedings at the West Regional (should that be where they go which seems likely from what people are saying on the West Regional board).

It's an interesting weekend in the South Region.  Here are this week's rankings:
South Region In-Region Record Overall Record
1. Shenandoah 26-7 34-8
2. Mary Washington 19-9 24-10
3. Millsaps 23-12 25-15
4. Methodist 23-10 27-11
5. LaGrange 24-16 26-17
6. York (Pa.) 23-12 23-12

I believe that Shenandoah and Mary Washington are already in, leaving Millsaps currently as the highest ranking Pool C team in the South.  Methodist and York both have 4 games this weekend, including 2 head-to-head.  Their other games are with Piedmont in a 3 day round robin going on in Ashville, NC.

Friday, Piedmont played 2 games, losing first to York and then having to come back and play a rested Methodist team.  With 11 runs over the last two innings, Piedmont helped out Millsaps with a 13-8 victory over Methodist.  Saturday, there was no rest for the weary as Piedmont played York again to start off the day, with York again taking the win.  Now Piedmont has turned around and are playing Methodist once again as the tired team playing the rested team.  Piedmont leads 2-1 after 2.5 but one wonders where they will find the pitching to complete 4 games in 30 hours.

Later this evening York and Methodist will play and these two teams will play a single game tomorrow.  As a Millsaps fan, the ideal thing would be for Piedmont to beat Methodist today and then have Methodist beat York two times.  That would put both Methodist and York at 2-2 for the weekend and it's hard to see them moving ahead of Millsaps with a .500 week.

Piedmont dropped 3 out of 4 to York and Methodist.  That makes things tight for Millsaps to hold on to the #3 spot in the South.  York has gone 2-0 with their wins over Piedmont and Methodist has gone 1-1.

Not that it matters since my hoping can't change reality, but I'm hoping for York and Methodist to split their games tonight and tomorrow.  Methodist shouldn't move up after a 2-2 weekend but they might if they go 3-1 with two wins over York.  York shouldn't move from 6 to 3 with a 3-1 weekend, but they might if they go 4-0 with two wins over Methodist and a good Piedmont team.

Of course, there's no guarantee that being the top Pool C in a region gets a team an at-large bid.  It's just that the South Region will probably only get 1 at the most, and I'd like Millsaps to be in that prime spot.

Just an FYI... all stats are used, not just conference stats.

I'm keeping an eye on the York-Methodist live stats while doing other things on the computer.  As mentioned yesterday, it seems to me that Methodist beating York is the best result for Millsaps regarding the regional rankings and a Pool C bid.

York had a 6-5 lead after 4 and has just put up one in the top of the 5th.  I'll post a final score at the end of the game.  The link for live stats on the game is:

(UPDATE:  That one run in the 5th has become 5 with York still batting.  York now leads 11-5 and it seems unlikely to me that Methodist will pull this one out.)

York went on to beat Methodist 18-6 today.  A great weekend for York as they beat Piedmont twice and Methodist twice.  How far up in the South ranking will they move with a 4-0 weekend?  It would seem like they would jump from #6 in the South to higher than Methodist, which was #4 in the last ranking (LaGrange was the #5 team).

Will York leapfrog Millsaps for that #3 spot and claim the position of the highest ranked C Pool team in the South.  Hard to say, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Frank,
While I agree it would be nice to see Millsaps in the postseason, I would say their odds are about a 1 in 10,000 chance. We've seen better Millsaps teams in the past get left out, and with a 25-15 record (23-12 in region) this season, there is no way they get in. It was a good rebuilding year with a very young infield.

As far as quality wins too, there are only two that I see. One over Mississippi College, who I think is in either way, and another over Trinity who is already in.

To be honest, I wouldn't get too involved in watching other regional games, it will just bum you out more and give you a headache trying to figure out all the different scenarios.

I think that one South Region team earns a Pool C bid.

I agree with Ralph that only one South Region team gets a Pool C which is why I was keeping up with the results of Methodist and York this weekend.  While I'll agree with INS_Major that we've seen better Millsaps teams in the past get left out, particularily the 2007 team, I would have to disagree on the 1 in 10,000 odds.  Also, one would have to consider the two wins over LaGrange as quality since that team is ranked 5th in the South.

The mysteries of NCAA Regional Rankings are many to me, but York with a 23-12 regional record was ranked 6th in the last poll behind a 5th place LaGrange team that was 24-16 in the region.  That tells me something about the quality of the York schedule compared to LaGrange, at least in the formula for the regional rankings.  York has now won 4 or 5 straight games since the last ranking and they may actually leapfrog into 3rd, but they still have two home games left with a good Ferrum team.

We still have a ways to go before we know if Millsaps will be that highest ranking team in the South Region when it comes to Pool C bids.

Ferrum does beat York today with the final score being 17-7.  The two teams play again tomorrow.  Won't really know what this means for the South Region Rankings until the next ranking comes out on May 13.
