I find it interesting that Rhodes and Millsaps were projected to finish ahead of Birmingham-Southern as neither is ranked in the D3 preseason poll. I think Rhodes has a chance to step up this year, Millsaps always has a strong program. I also think that U of Dallas may surprise a few people this year in the SCAC.

SCAC West Team Previews and information
(including 2013 teams)

I am new to the SCAC so my comments are only based on what I have read and heard from a few others....so take this accordingly. Based on the lack of posting in this section of the D3baseball I am probably talking to myself, but that has not stopped me before, so here goes.

First impressions.

BSC is going to be one hellava team next year if they are ranked by D3baseball with only two Sr's and 15 freshmen. I have heard they are supposed to be good but the coaching poll has them at third in the eastern. Coaches seem to be at odds with the D3baseball brain trust. What am I missing?

Will Rhodes step up this year? Seems like they are a team on the rise, but can they establish themselves as an elite team? Based on the coaches' poll, some think they will this year. Their roster looks like a nice blend of players based on class. Great looking field at least from the Internet pictures.

I have been told Millsaps always produces competitive teams. This year may well  depend on how the 11 Jr's developed over the summer. Can they step it up this year or is next year their year?

Last year the University of Dallas took the series from a number of competitive teams and I was told their pitching looked very good. Now that they are in the conference it will be interesting to see if they can continue with this success facing the top pitchers in the conference as opposed to facing non-conference pitching. They will be one team to watch IMO.

Hendrix returns a good part of their team from last year and will be looking to improve enough to challenge for the Western Division. Will the pitching match the hitting and will the team come together to take on Trinity ?

Trinity has a strong balanced team deep in pitching and position players and should be favored to win the SCAC again, but will their team come together and perform? Will they be able to take the next step and break though to Appleton?. The three games with Chapman in early March might give some indication to this.

For Sewanee, Southwestern, Austin College and Oglethorpe.....hope springs eternal.

Side stories. Centenary comes into the SCAC next year, and opens against Hendrix and plays a midweek three game series vs Trinity so we will get a little bit of a preview to next year in these 6 early season games.

Millsaps gives up 3 in the top of the 9th, scores 4 in the bottom of the 9th for an 8-7 victory over Belhaven University (5-2), the #15 team in the NAIA rankings.  Millsaps used 8 pitchers, most of those pitchers are new to the team this year.

Thanks Ralph looking forward to talking baseball.

RE: Centenary, I saw that they were in the ASC this year. Last year they were D1 if I am not mistaken. I will go back and look at the press release, but for some reason I remember reading that they would be eligible for the tournament next year, but I may be wrong. I took a quick look at their schedule and I see that they have a three midweek games scheduled against Trinity.  I would imagine they lost some kids who transferred, due to the move, but I would think they would be a solid competitor this year.

BBfan: I will be at the Chapman games, if you come we could put a face to a "name".

108Stitches - I will be at the Trinity-Chapman games of 3/1 & 3/2. I have a business trip and decided to stay and see the 2 games. I'll be the guy in the UR baseball shirt.

Will come find you. Going to be quite a crowd I think.

Second straight shutout today for the Trinity pitching staff as Ben Klimesh held Louisiana College to five hits, one walk, and recorded 13 K's in a nine-inning, 1-0 complete game.     Yesterday saw Josh Fink hold Howard Payne to a single hit in eight innings as the Tigers won, 7-0, over Howard Payne.  Fink allowed one walk and had nine strikeouts.

Trinity (4-0) and host Concordia (5-0) hook up tonight at 7pm in Austin.  Too bad it's so dang cold here today, I hope nobody pulls a muscle tonight.

Millsaps went to 2-0 Friday night with an 11-3 win over the Ozarks.  A freshman from Houston got the start and pitched 5 scoreless innings.  A lot of newcomers have gotten a turn on the mound so far and they look like a promising group--too early to tell how they will do over the long haul.  Wes Perkins is back as the starting catcher.

Millsaps has freshmen starters at 3rd and short and they remind me a lot of Will Hawkins and Hunter Abrams.  Hopefully they will put up stats equal to those two over the next 4 years.  Kevin Wall is out with an injury so the second base spot might rotate between several players for now.  Andrew Evans is starting at 1st and is off to a good start with 5 rbi and 2 extra base hits.

Drew Leonard, last year's shortstop has moved to center and Jules Roussel returns in right.  Left field might be a manned by committee situation to start off the season.  In general, I see the Millsaps team as one with a lot of potential this year but one that has a lot of new pieces.  One thing that will be very different is that Millsaps doesn't start conference play until March 22nd since they are now in the SCAC East.  This might be a perfect year for such a late start of conference play.

This TV guy for Trinity is great.  He just pulled out the line "I think that's...yep, thats a polar bear chasing a penguin down the right field line."  Heck of a pitchers duel too.

It is early in the season; but you have to be impressed with Trinity's starting pitching. Three games over two days, 24 innings, 32 K's - 5 BB and 2 earned runs. Tonight they played in an igloo.

Conditions this weekend were very challenging, cold and windy. The CTX night had 34deg temps and 20MPH winds blowing in from LF, making it challenging for everyone and keeping the scores down. The Louisiana Col and Concordia vs Trinity games were two very good games with both ending with the tying run at third. Pitching for all three teams looked very good for so early in the season. It was a shame someone had to lose either of those games

Rauh vs Kilmesh could be a great regional preview.
Baseball is not a game that builds character, it is a game that reveals it.
