Was there also. Gray looked like he is shaping into their much needed #3 starter. Actually the game was very close 1-0 through 6 and then 3-0 when Gray was relieved in the 8th.

Centenary is nowhere near the team they were last year as far as size and strength, they are young and will get better over the season and into next year. Well coached squad. Their starter, Tromba pitched a very good game through 6 and kept TU off balance, I think he had not given up a hit through 3. He started to tire and this is when TU jumped on them.

It actually was 3-0 when Gray was relieved and CU had runners on first and second so it could have easily been a much tighter game. The difference is that TU has a pen full of relievers who can come in and throw 90+ and it makes it difficult to come back against them late in the game.

There is a trend I am seeing where the games are tight until the starting pitcher get tired and the other teams don't seem to have the arms or adjust to the pitching mid game to compete with TU. This of course will be different later in the  season and in Regionals where all of the teams will have deeper pens.

Two more on tap for today.

Centenary is a very young team that could develop over the season. They have a couple of pitchers that could make them dangerous later in the season in a given game, however they have a lot to work on. Very sloppy defensively as well as basic base running mistakes. This team is nothing like the past couple of years as far as size and power. What they should take away from this weekend is that for a bunch of innings they were competitive, fix the mistakes and they can compete. They have some nice young arms that just need some time, one funny observation of the pitching staff, you have to have long hair mullet to pitch for them. LOL

Trinity is starting to shape into a championship level team - not there yet but there are signs. They are sick in depth everywhere. Guys keep coming off the bench and making huge contributions, and they are rock solid defensively. The bull pen keeps rolling out pitchers,  3 of the 4 arms that came out of the bullpen this weekend were serious 90+ throwers. (2 of them had not even pitched yet this season)  If they keep developing  they should have the depth needed to get through a tough tournament. I think the challenge will be to get enough innings so they are ready come tournament time.

IMO this team has the chance to be the best they have fielded in three years, not the best at the start, but at the end.

Another fine effort today for Ryan Gray who went eight innings, allowing only two hits and one earned run while striking out 14 (!) in a 9-1 victory at Austin College.

Trinity takes the DH from Austin, 3-2 and 9-3.    Congrats to Coach Tim Scannell, who today won his 500th in his career (500-199; 212-82 SCAC).

Predictions for this weekend games:

TLU takes 2 of 3 from Austin. Austin can play tough for a game or two.

UofDallas 2 of 3 from Centenary.

Anybody catch the dust up between the Trinity coach and the Southwestern coach in the 8th inning of second game on Saturday? I tuned in online just as it started up and was wondering what started it. They were nose to nose at home plate going at it like nobodies business. I was waiting for someone to start swinging at any second. I checked the archive video and the game stops in the 4th inning and starts back up as the kids are shaking hands at the end of the game.

Jack Parkman

the SW coach was probably just congratulating Scannel on his 500th win.

I was there, it was one of the more exciting college games I have been to. Quick summary the umpires let it get out of control but this is what I understand happened.

First game Friday night SW hits 4 or 5 batters. (Just background) TU takes the bases and mercy's SW.

Game Sat morning the TU staff ace was not having one of his best games and hits a SW batter, who stares him down all the way to first. Apparently there is some chirping going on with this player during the game between the two teams after this.

In the 7th (7 inning game) Trinity's closer throws a 94MPH FB behind this kid.

Game ends.

Next game.

TU gets a double and then a HR scoring two.

TU's best hitter, Hirschberg comes up and promptly gets hit. Big ruckus and everyone knows what is going on but the umps, who do not warn the teams.  ??? (BTW he causes a throwing error and steals second immediately) More fun in the stands and TU bench chirping. He then gets double in home and the TU bench is all over the SW pitcher.

Things settle down but benches are still going after each other pretty loud. Since TU is up they are just ruthless on the SW pitcher.

Top 6th SW batter gets hit. (grazes his jersey, but really just an inside pitch that cut a bit) More chirping from SW side.

Bottom 6th TU gets a runner on, he steals 2nd, and then the SS makes an error on a batted ball and the ball kicks away from him and the TU runner heads for home, SS gets to ball and throws to catcher who comes up the line catches the ball and the TU runner just crashes in to him sending him flying, runner called out, thrown out of game and the benches clear with the umpires and coaches trying to keep the kids apart.

Next inning apparently someone on the TU coaching side saw the SW coach give the signal to hit the TU batter and sure enough he gets hit.  This is when Scannel went berserk and was on the field nose to nose with the SW coach.

Anyway it was a wild one, actually kind of fun to watch, glad no one got hurt however. Umpires should have warned both benches early and this probably would not have happened or as been as crazy.

Video archive is all messed up. Friday night game is actually the last game and skipped the middle of the game. The second and third game are all mixed together.

Tues game vs UMHB should be a good one.

The games seem to be in the correct order but apparently they removed the incidents in questions because all the video from the 4th inning on is missing and it goes straight to shaking hands at the end of the game. Sounds like an entertaining game though.

16 Trinity batters hit by a pitch in 6 games will get any team a little fired up.

Just got back from the Trinity/Dallas game. Trinity pulled out the win from what started as a sloppy game and then turned into a very hard fought clean baseball game. Very fun to watch.

My takeaways:

Dallas is a young team that is going to keep getting better. They are much better team today than then probably were 4 weeks ago, and are better than their record. They are a very very well coached team. They are still making mistakes that young teams make, however they will be dangerous in the SCAC playoff's. They should be very proud of this weekend's performance, knocking off the number 1 team this morning (not for long, but who cares..until May) and coming close this afternoon.

Trinity is going through the mid season doldrums. They are a bit flat and look tired at some positions. Last year they lost to teams about this time that they should not have and this year they have so much talent and fight in them that they overcome this. They will lose some more games this year but I don't see them loosing 2 or 3 games they should not have. This team has a fight to it and never seems to give up. They still are working through pitching, but they are very very deep.

My pick for SCAC playoff are:

Trinity
TLU
Dallas
Centenary

Trinity has a very tough schedule this week. CTX away Tuesday and then an away series at Hendrix who are always always tough at home. They should be thrilled  with a 3-1 performance, but could easily go 2-2 if they don't clean up their fielding.

That's about average for Heidelberg! :) Of course, they do everything but try to get hit.

Good feedback,108.  I think all of Dallas' games against TLU were one-run jobs and TLU went 2-1 against them, too.

Will be interesting to see who starts against CTX tomorrow.
