Adam Frey pitched 7 strong to guide Alexandria to the UBL championship over San Angelo 3-2... tomorrow against Edlnburg in LA (650 mi drive).... Watch for Adam back in Edinburg!!!!

Frey's regular season stats in his limited time with the Aces:

W/L - 4-1, 1 SV
ERA - 1.93, best on the team
App/GS - 15/4
IP - 46.2
Hits allowed - 36
K's - 27
BB's - 12
WP - 1
HB - 0
HR allowed - 1
OBA - .211, 2nd to the team's closer (20 IP in 17 App)

Not too shabby!  If he had enough innings pitched he would hold the league ERA crown by a wide margin.

As the league championship is a five-game series it would not surprise me to see Frey get two starts.   The local paper, in an article written before the Alexandria game calls Frey "the best pitcher on the staff" and "a gold mine."

Trinity alum Adam Frey capped off Alexandria's season with an 8-2 win over Edinburg last night.  He dominated with 7 shutout innings before giving up a 2 run homer and left the bullpen to finish up.

His final record with the Ace's was 6-1 with a 1.93 era...  congrats!!!

I hope he gets a shot with an MLB-affiliated team next year.  My guess about the UBL is that it plays at the A to AA level, probably closer to A.

Hmm, the SA Missions could always use a pitcher ... tho Adam wouldn't know what to do if he had a crowd of over 5K actually supporting him in SA!   :D

Ron,
I  have to disagree on the comparative level of play. Based on watching 60-80 minor league games since 2004, I doubt any of the independent leagues could play with a Rookie league team, if that.  While I admire the guys grinding away at the independent league level, I have seen Adam and another pitcher in that league quite a bit. My son played with both. The hard truth is that   if they could play A ball and above, MLB would sign them in a minute. Think of it this way: Major league teams will sign, for a very small amount, any player who can make them better.  They rarely sign  independent league players.
Players in A ball include several #1 picks and even more guys picked in rounds 1-10.    Every starter I saw for 5 games last week was 92 plus.  Last year, our son faced Homer Bailey and others in A ball.  Bailey cruised at 97 and on occasion hit 101. I have become pretty good friends with a scout with a major league team.  His view is that Texas, Stanford and the like couldn't compete with Rookie league teams in MLB.  The reason is actually pretty obvious:  MLB drafts the very best players in the US and then combines them with the best free agents from the Latin countries and the rest of the world.  In professional ball, the 7-8-9  hitters on a minor league team usually were the #4 hitters in college or were one of the elite high school players.  The 10th pitcher on a professional team was a#1 or 2 on a college team at Texas, A&M or someplace like that.
I hope Adam gets a chance next year and that a MLB team will use his success this year to "find a reason" to sign him.  The difference between the two, however, is enormous. Personally, I believe Adam has the "upside" to have a chance.  However, unless you throw 90 plus as a righty, it is hard to get a "good look."

John Fox from Millsaps was on the team that lost to Adam Frey's team in the championship series.  I talked to Fox recently and he said that Frey has changed his mechanics quite a bit and has improved dramatically thanks to the changes.  Hopefully those improvements will be enough to give him a shot at progressing up the ladder in pro ball.

Fox had a fairly good second half of the season after a rough start and I think he is going to try to give it one more year to see what happens.  Sometimes it's more about being in the right situation at the right time than just a matter of pure talent so hopefully he will find the right situation.

It's way too early to talk about the 2007 baseball season but yesterday I watched the Millsaps team wind up their fall practice.  I took some photos of the batters and pitchers just to have something up on the photo website prior to the spring and those are posted at:

It looks like Millsaps returns 7 of their starters in the field with the lone exception being Garner Wetzel.  It will take a collective effort to replace his bat in the lineup but I expect that run scoring will be a strength of next year's team.  The big question mark will be the starting pitching with John Fox and Doug Kindler graduating after combining for a 19-3 record as seniors and starting 31 of the 50 Millsaps games last year.  Millsaps has an interesting mix of returning players, freshmen and transfers and I think the pitching will be strong and the team certainly is thinking about matching and/or exceeding the results of last season.

I'm not sure if it means much of anything, but the SCAC had two teams listed in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's preseason poll with Millsaps at 16 and Trinity at 26.  As someone else pointed out, the poll is very similar to the rankings at the end of last year.  Here's a link to the thread discussing the poll:

It seems a little early to be talking baseball but Millsaps opens the season on Feburary 9th which isn't really that far away.

The preseason poll is a poor predictor of the end of the season poll.

JP--As you and others have pointed out on the other thread, the preseason poll seems to be basically a carrying forward of the teams that were successful last season.  It might not mean much on how the 2007 season will end up but it's nice to get some recognition.

Millsaps lost a lot and Millsaps brings back a lot.  I think they will be as strong or stronger than the team that was only a play or two away from being in the World Series last year.  Replacing the hitting of Garner Wetzel will be tough but it will probably be easier than replacing the pitching of the four seniors from last year.

One thing about the pitching last year is that the depth of the pitching staff might have suffered because Fox and Kindler were so strong.  I think they'll be a much deeper pitching staff this year and that should help tremendously in tournament play, plus I think people will be surprised at just how much pitching talent they have on this year's team.

It says more about the quality of your program than your propects for the upcoming season when you are in the preseason poll.  For instance I really dont see why Eastern Conn State is ranked so high but they have a consistent program.

Millsaps can certainly return to the playoffs.  I remember when a Wisc-Oshosh team lost their power hitters and best pitchers after the 1985 season and came back to the Championship the next year.

Does anyone know the details of the new championship format this year?  I assume the first weekend in Memphis will be a cross divisional series.  How many teams will make the cross divisional tournament, 3 or 4???  Lots scheduling changes this year, apparently....

Just a quick note primarily for Millsaps fans (but not limited to Millsaps fans).  I've started a Millsaps Sports email that should be going out about once a week.  Mostly I'm just gathering up information about coming events, recent results, and interesting articles and I'm putting them all in one spot.

If you would like to get on the emailing list then just drop me (Frank Ezelle) a note at millsapssports@yahoo.com .  It's just something I'm trying to do to promote Millsaps sports by getting information out to Millsaps fans instead of counting on them to search the Millsaps website or other places on the internet.

Hope everyone has a safe and Happy New Year and that 2007 is a great year for the SCAC--it certainly should be an interesting year with all of the new teams.

Frank.
