Does anyone know the details of the new championship format this year?  I assume the first weekend in Memphis will be a cross divisional series.  How many teams will make the cross divisional tournament, 3 or 4???  Lots scheduling changes this year, apparently....

The new championship format will be a two weekend set up.  The first will take place in Millington at USA stadium.  It will be the top 4 teams from each side in best of 3 series.  The 4 winners will move on to Georgetown for the final weekend.

Does Millsaps have a transfer from Ole Miss?  What's the story with him?

frank_ezelle

I guess you are referring to Travis Bogue in regards to the Ole Miss player.  He's a 6'5" left handed pitcher who was all-state in Mississippi as a junior and 2nd team all-state as a senior.

I've only done a search on the internet so I may have my facts a little wrong but it looks like he signed with Ole Miss and maybe spent a red shirt year up there before playing last year at Meridian Junior College.  It seems like I saw something that describes him as a high 80's pitcher but who knows if that's too high or a little too low.

The SCAC baseball season gets underway in 4 weeks when Rhodes and Hendrix open at home.  Predictions for the 2007 season?

frank_ezelle

Millsaps lost Garner Wetzel, a 1st team All-American with 14 HR's and a D3 leading 91 rbi's.  They lost their top two starters, John Fox and Todd Kindler, who combined for a 19-3 record in last year.  In addition they lost senior pitchers Tal Hendrix and Brad Mizerany.

That's a lot to lose but they also return a lot.  The entire infield returns along with two outfielders and the main designated hitter.  These 7 players all had an on base percentage of .414 or higher.  The catcher's position was handled by 3 players last year and they all return.  Nicky Prather had the most starts of the 3 and his on base % was .427.

The record of the returning pitchers from last year was an impressive 13-3 which included Jay Hollenbeck's 5-0 record and 2.08 ERA.  The other four returnee's were solid last year with Drew Maddox making 26 appearances as a reliever and Tait Hendrix, Brandon Ingram and David Hutzel all appearing both as starters and relievers.

In addition to the above pitchers, Millsaps has a couple of transfers with a lot of upside and they have a handful of promising freshmen.  I really don't know enough about any of these new pitchers to make any comments about specific players.

All in all, I think the players are optomistic about their prospects this season and their goal is to go further than they did last year when they were stopped in the regional finals.  Millsaps opens their season Feburay 9th with a home game against East Texas Baptist.

If I remember correctly, Trinity had a tremendous number of home games last year due to the schedule and the weather.  This looks like a far more balanced schedule.

Any word on how the roster looks this year and has the team started practicing?  I saw a little of a Millsaps intrasquad game yesterday--couldn't tell much but it felt like a balmy spring day with yesterday's temps in the 70's.  It seems early for baseball but the opening pitch for Millsaps is Feb. 9th, less than 4 weeks away.

I am considering seeing McMurry hosting Chapman.

Yep, can't blame you for that!  It should be a dandy!  If you do, give me a report on Ryan Cavan,,,,  he left TU after his great frosh year and transferred to Chapman....

Who is the favorite this year, East and West?? What team will sneak up on the pack (Rhodes in 2006)? Is it true that there are two weeks of conference tournament this year?

Who are the top players in 2007?

Does anyone have a beat on the Sewanee Tigers? Checking their 2007 roster I noticed that starting SS Sean Hilley, who would have been a Jr. is not on the roster? He was arguably their best fielder and probably going to be their leadoff or number three hitter. Big loss if he is gone...

I saw a lot of the Millsaps baseball players at the basketball games this past weekend.  It sounds like practice is going well for the team as would be expected for a top-20 team with so many returning players.  The question mark will be the pitching but I think the pitching will be on par with last year and maybe better since the 4 game weekends will give them the opportunity to build more depth.

The player I've been most curious about is Brent Buffa, a senior transfer from Washington University in St. Louis.  I can only go by what I hear from the players, but I hear that he is pitching well which is no surprise since he was 20-2 over the last 2 years at Washington.  I also was told that he works hard in training which is no surprise since he pitched complete games in 10 of his 12 starts last year.  The thing I'm waiting to see is the hitting.  He got no at-bats at Washington last year but I was told that he is hitting well in practice and he has homerun power so maybe Brent will help Millsaps replace the senior pitchers from last year and a little bit of Wetzel's run production.  I'm looking forward to seeing how this season unfolds.

Frank,
I think Millsaps will  score runs!!!!  They scored runs before Wetzel by hitting singles and running all over the bases.  With Wetzel,, they emphasized power and not so much the speed. This year Coach Page has a very veteran lineup.  They have players who hit as freshman and I am sure will hit as seniors.
Teams coached by Jim Page have shown they can score runs and win in a lot of different ways, except when Trinity combined deeper and stronger pitching and clutch hitting, which may end up being the Trinity recipe again this year. ;)
